Marilyns
Ini Dunia Baru (Marilyns EP)Back when the Here Comes The Young Ones compilation was released on Willy Nilly Records from across the causeway in 1998, there was some criticism from listeners about the quality of tracks, particularly that of the Marilyns, a band panned quite vehemently for their over-obvious Suede hangover.
A few years and no news of the band, one might think they'd probably cried and broken up after the warm welcome from local music fans. Kudos then to the Marilyns for regrouping and returning with this fine EP of "melayu and ingris" songs.
The current lineup is Aza (vocals, acoustics), Kai (bass, vocals), Wandy (drums, percussions) and Sham (also of plainsunset, guitars, vocals). Aza has traded his Brett Andersonisms for fey vocals, and the band has generally taken on a quiet, Malay folk, lo-fi sound good enough for your discman as it would amongst your best buds at your void deck with acoustic guitars.
You're My Anecdote, My Illnesses, one of just two upbeat rock songs, is so bright and sprightly feelgood you can imagine yourself in a darkened pub smiling and bobbing along with the band.
Who needs Manson when you've got the Marilyns? (a spirited 6.5)
