Armor protection

One of the most important key feature for Merkava Mk3 is its unique modular cast steel armor design. The use of modular components allows damaged parts to be replaced under field conditions. The armor components being bolted also allow the possiblity to reduce the weight of a tank for ease of transportation. The top armor also provides extra protection against the latest generation of top attack anti-tank missiles.

FCS and ESM features

The advanced FCS (Knight Mk III) was jointly developed by Israeli MoD and EL-OP. To ensure first round hit/kill possiblity, an auto-tracking device is incorporated to the new fire control system(FCS). It allows engagement of mobile targets even under poor weather and visibility conditions.
To enchance its survivability, Merkava Mk 3 was the first MBT to fit with a theat warning system as a standard production item. The LWS-2 Laser Warning System was developed by AMCORAM which provides an alert whenever optical raditation is aimed at the vehicle.
