buppy

From what I have come across, Excel spreadsheets are often used to produce nice looking tables and the functions used are seldom beyond the arithmetic ones (because your boss doesn't ask for anything more). Here are some Microsoft Excel applications which I hope can give you an idea on how the seldom tapped power of Excel can produce pretty solutions to simple problems. They were originally developed for all kinds of  reasons - from plain experimenting, to wanting to solve a simple problem, for fun and as teaching tools (for kids).

I call these buppy solutions because using Excel sure beats using a pen and paper, yah? If you are unsure how to download the spreadsheets, read the instructions below.

If there's a solution you would like to see let me know and I'll see what I can do. Or if you have an Excel (or Lotus 1-2-3) solution you want to share, write me and I will post it here.

Numbered Days Who doesn't know their own age? But how many days old are you? If you are not yet 26 you haven't lived 10,000 days.

Same Calendar Do you know that a leap-year calendar is repeated only once every 28 years? If you still have your historic 2000 calendar you can re-use it in 2028.

Number reader Chip Pearson's logic is behind this touched-up solution. Great that your toddler can add 2 numbers together. Now let's hear her  read 987,654,321 as a value and not a countdown.

Prime Numbers So, is 1,001,123 a prime number? Your calculator can't tell you, can it? Here's something that can.

Did you know?

Downloading instructions

Each of the solutions is zipped and made into an executable. To download, click on the link, save it to a folder of your choice and when that's done double-click it to unzip it. When you open the spreadsheet and are prompted with a warning about macros select the yes or enable macro button or you won't get to enjoy all the features of a solution. They come with little or no instructions on how to use them as I think they are pretty simple and self-explanatory. However if you are still unsure just let me know. Have fun!
