Scorpions has since the earliest civilisation capture both the fascination and fear of man. Ancient mythology surrounds this creature which has existed since the Silurian period some 420-450 million years ago. It's reputation as a symbol of evil seems to stem from the disproportionate fear of their venomous sting. To give an idea of the 'danger' the order of Scorpiones pose to human, out of the 700-1500 species of scorpions (depending on sources) discovered, only 20-25 species of scorpions are potentially dangerous. Out of these so called 'dangerous' scorpions, generally less than 2% of their stings are lethal on adults. (Habermehl, 1981)

Foreword/Disclaimer

It is not the intention of this page to downplay scorpions danger or to act as a definitive source for information on scorpions.
Much of scorpion's knowledge is mixed with hearsay and exaggeration such that a definite objective conclusion is difficult to arrive at. As an amateur and a scorpion enthusiast, I am unconsciously or otherwise equally guilty of the above. If you find any error, please inform me to help separate truth from myth.
The information here are obtained and interpreted from my personal experience with scorpions, friends, books and numerous internet sites. As many of the pictures and information are intellectual property of another, I may have inadvertently infringe on the copyright of the source. Any institution or person who find their pictures or information unwittingly on my page can inform me and I will withdraw or acknowledge their contributions as desired.
Apologies for the above as without the expertise of others, my scanty knowledge would not add much to the understanding of scorpions.
Though the information is correct to the best of my ability, there may be still errors.
I do not bear any responsibility for tangible or intangible damage/death which may arise from the use of the material in this web page.

Despite the medical importance, interesting ancestry and relatively large size of scorpions, literature on scorpions is sparse and many contains discrepancies and contradictions. Since I am studying Dentistry which really isn't related to scorpions, my interpretations may not be the original intended meaning of the authors.
The terminology and details used here may overwhelm some while others find that I've oversimplified.
