Dorado are one of the most colourful pelagic fish.Their colour rages from blue, green gold to silver,and they have dark speckles on them.Their tails are mainly yellow in colour.The females have a rounded forehead while the males have a high and step forehead.The male is usually called the 'bull'and the female 'cow'.They are sometimes mixed up with the mammal dolphin so they are called by their hawaiian name mahi mahi.

They can grow up to lengths of 2 metres and weights of 40kgs or more.But the common sizes are from 0.6kgs to 3-4kgs.

Habits

They travel in schools when small but when they grow big,they are likely to travel along.They congrigate at FADs or Buoys.They nomally eat plankton,krill,tiny fish,flying fish,gar,small tuna and squid.

They can be caught on lures,life baits,dead fishes,fish strips, squid, jigs,poppers and flies.Be sure that your fish is rigged propeply as they may not take unnatural baits.They would leap out of water and provide the angler with a memorial experience once hooked.A wire or heavy mono trace may be used when targeting big mahi mahi.

The mahi mahi's flesh is pink and is delicious.They should be bled and killed straight after capture. Small mahi mahi are used for baits when going for large gamefish.
