Some Background Information

There is hardly anyone in the world who does not know Confucius or has not at least heard of the sayings of this great and wise Chinese sage. He had a great passion for grasping the nature of things.

Confucius was both a transmitter and an originator, both a creator and a conserver, of ancient Chinese culture. He aimed at social reform through education.

For a Brief Period since the fall of Manchu Dynasty and the inauguration of the Chinese Republic in 1911, Confucianism ceased to be a state religion in China. However in 1934, there was an official revival of Confucianism and the birthday of Confucius was declared a public holiday throughout China.

Even today, many teachings of Confucius have been discredited as old-fashioned, absurd and even harmful by some who oppose Confucianism.

But those who are in favour of Confucianism, a very large majority, are convinced that the teachings of Confucius not only are in harmony with the current thought of the world but also offer valuable suggestions towards the solution of world problems.

For example, the major course of study which Confucius offered was along the line of ethics, especially love (ren) and the rules of proper conduct (li), the former stressing the individual quality while the latter social control.

Indeed, teachings of Confucius have gained popularity in many countries in cultivating the eight cornerstones of character.

We hear everyday that the crimes of all types are increasing in all countries. The youth everywhere are showing lesser and lesser respect for the authorities and the elders. The Discipline in schools is slackening. The employer and employee relationships are breaking down in many places.

There is a need today to teach good character and values. A study of Confucius values will definitely help us to become better human beings. Teachings of Confucius offer valuable suggestions towards the solution of today's world problems.

Join us to talk about Confucianism during the Confucius Conference '97 in China.
