Message from Conference Hon. Chairman & Advisor
Landslides are frequently responsible for considerable losses of both money and lives, and the severity of the landslide problem worsens with increased urban development and change in land use. A wealth of experience has been accumulated in recent years in understanding, recognition and treatment of landslide hazards but our knowledge is still fragmentary. Particular area requiring attention concerns the selection and design of appropriate, cost-effective remedial measures, which in turn require a clear understanding of the conditions and processes that caused the landslide.

Given this understanding it is not surprising that landslides are rapidly becoming the focus of major scientific research, engineering study and practices, and land-use policy throughout the world. Thus, it is a time to look forward and to reflect on the past.

The 3rd International Conference on Landslides, Slope Stability & the Safety of Infrastructures is intending to provoke a reflection of our past, and at the same time initiate visions of the future. Case histories are an important part of the journey on which we have traveled. They will be particularly encouraged. Our progress into the future will depend partly on innovation. Therefore, research orientated papers will be solicited. Potential themes for contributions are:

P01-Geological and geotechnical site investigation
P02-Design shear strength parameters and their measurements
P03-Limit equilibrium and deformation slope stability analysis
P04-Back analysis of slope failures
P05-Landslide hazard and risk assessment
P06-Landslide inventory and hazard zonation
P07-Landslide stabilization and remedial measures
P08-Observational methods, instrumentation and monitoring
P09-Effects of rainfall and groundwater
P10-Effects of seismicity
P11-Slope instability of landfills and waste materials
P12-Slope instability in coastal areas
P13- Slope instability in urban areas
P14-Slope instability in special materials, residual soils, shales, loess, soft sensitive clays

The aim of the Conference is to provide an opportunity for engineers and scientists working in the field of slope instability and remediation to meet and to present new ideas, achievements and experiences. It will serve as a meeting place for the development of closer links among researchers and practitioners. It will also provide an opportunity for cultural and social activities with the exotic background of a cosmopolitan city for the delegates and the accompanying persons.

I look forward to welcoming you to Singapore, and to a conference that will be both technically stimulating and socially enjoyable. Please come!

Mihail Popescu Conference Hon. Chairman & Advisor
