INTRODUCTION

The ability of Man to create and to destroy buildings, facilities, languages and cultures, and his ingenious re-engineering of the environment to suit his purpose is written in history. However, there are some things that Man alone cannot control. Disasters caused by natural events or hazards that arise from related occurrences that hitherto were not considered are major issues that Man must procrastinate deeply to find solutions.

As we jostle to find solutions to problems, new issues surface. The continuing cycle of finding solutions to problems is the subject of this conference. Subjects that were brushed aside in the past or considered insensitive or inappropriate are now major topics of discussion. This conference addresses topics related to the protection of buildings and occupants to natural and man-made hazards. The conference considers everything imaginable to promote better understanding of our environment. For example, the natural and insidious effects of steel bar corrosion and vibration of structures could cause untold damage to the entire fabric of a building. So, how do we protect buildings against such attacks? In modern buildings, how do we ensure that the average apartment is able to resist the effects of gas explosion! How do we minimise subsidence! These are vital topics that we must endeavour to address so that engineers and scientists are aware of their detrimental effects.

Special topics, such as protection of occupants in buildings from the hazards of chemical or biological contamination and the hardening of structures to protect occupants from the effects of explosions are especially welcome.

Conference Themes

Discussion will be focused on engineering and technological aspects and issues that will make buildings and structures safer against:

  1. Terrorists attacks
  2. Impact and shock loads
  3. Fire
  4. Chemical and biological hazards
  5. Structural collapse (architectural, structural and construction)
  6. Corrosion and natural degradation
  7. Natural hazards (landslides, earthquakes, etc)
  8. Vibrations
  9. Ground subsidence

Related issues are also invited, such as:

  1. Mitigation (preventive measures)
  2. Rescue, safety and evacuation techniques

Other important themes within the scope of the Conference may be considered for inclusion and discussion.
