Fishing At Labrador Park

Have been visiting the Labrador Park for the past six months since the opening of the access link road to Car Park B. Have'nt got much luck myself but the group of fishing kakis I mingled with have seen result in catches like table fish sized Chermin (Trevaly) and Garoupa (all using live prawn bait) and

palm-sized "Or Kar Yah" (black ant?) fish using "hay-pure" (shrimps) as bait.

Taman can be jigged off the jetty if the water current is right.

Of late I've found that the bigger taman (about 10cm - 13cm) are harder to come by. Usually caught are those "baby" taman (about 6 - 8 cm).

Weekends are usually crowded with good turnout from anglers and park visitors alike. More than a dozen rods lining the jetty is not uncommon. If you are one of those who enjoys tranquillity while fishing go during weekdays.

Be warned for those who are driving. During weekends the small carpark is usually full and motorist are tempted to park outside the marked parking lots along double yellow lines. Carpark wardens are said to be issuing summons to errant motorist.

So, you may end up paying heavily for your fishing trip!

It was a weekday, sometime around Apr this year when I first visited this 'ah lau' fishing pond. Obviously, 'ah lau' is the operator there. I met my friend at Yishun Central that morning 8am. After about 10 mins drive, to my surprise, such kampong still exist in Singapore!!! There are total 3 ponds, Big pond for daily fishing, small pond for hourly fishing and the 3rd pond for prawns breeding. Before I start to take a stroll along the countryside, I saw 'ah lau' walking out from his 'hut'. Bare footed and his taning skin makes him looks exactly like a tough fisherman!!

After we order some instant noodles from auntie (ah lau's wife), there are total 8 rods fishing in the big pond. We ve' got 4 sea bass n 2 mangrove jack, not bad!! Beside the fishing pond, we saw speed boats from William Water Sports playing water sking passing by. During high tights, ah lau will normally turn the valve for sea water to flow into the pond. Spinning with taman from ah lau got me another red snapper n sea bass before we started packing our barang at 4plus.

While walking towards our vehicle, I saw a angler fishing at the small pond. His got 9 fishes in an hour, which include a GROUPER!! I knew I would be hooked to this fishing pond then. Now I visit this fishing pond every weekend. For those who are interested, the fishing pond is located near Yishun Ave6. When u reach Blk406, there is a small lane opposite which lead u to the fishing pond. For enquiry, you may call 754 2273. But be prepared, your reply would be in TEOCHEW!

Dear friends,

My name is Estee. I am the only Singaporean living in Northern Sweden.(If I am not wrong). I moved to Sweden 4 years ago and I am nuts about fishing. It's fun to be able to share our fishing story through the line.

My apartment is very close to a river where salmons & trouts swim up stream to the mountain lay their egg. Whenever my addiction for fishing arise, I usually go to the river throw my bait & very often it is quite easy to catch big fishes like pike, salmon & trout weight between 6 to 12 kilo!!!

Sweden is a paradise for fisherman. Here, there's excellent fishing water from hundreds thousands of rivers, lakes, streams, seas and coast etc… The region is sparsely populated with clean air, silenceness, pristine water, nature beauty & deep forests inhabited by the whole range of arctic fauna. To me, fishing in Sweden is like meditation. It nourish your mind, soul, spirit and offer me peace, heavenly...

During summer, the variations of water offer excellent conditions for fly fishing, spinning and coarse fishing, And during winter, ice fishing is the most popular sport for the local here. To me, it's a whole new experience in which I never experienced. Can you imagine standing on thick layers of ice watching some many beautiful fishes swimming underneath?

I dearly look forward to spend my summer holiday at the fishing camp. There, I will be guided on various fishing technique and I can try fishing in different water ...I heard that the camp is quite popular among the Japanese & European tourist...

By the way, the 21st World Flyfishing Championship 2001 will be held in Sweden on the 14 to 21 August 2001.Sweden Lapland is an eldorado for fishing enthusiast with water suitable for all. Whether an amateur or professional fisherman. I only wish that there would be some Singapore representatives at the competition that I could cheer for...

Presently, I am working on a project about fishing , if there is anything you like to know concerning fishing or touring Sweden . Please do not hesitate to reach me. I will be most willing to be of help.

Yours sincerely,

Estee Weng (nelina@mail.bip.net)

Since this friday afternoon i got no CCA,so i jio 2 of me fren go fishing at kallang basin area. Time to test out my newly bought rod. Bait used: unfresh prawns and unfresh tambans Arriving at the spot, some ah lau alreadi there casting net, prolly for tamban for we saw some jumping around. Within half and hour of spinning unfresh tambans, something took my bait. The fight was short as the 200g stargazer was no match for my 10lb fireline. Another half hour passed with no action. At around 4:15pm,when my fren retrieved his handline, there was a small eel at the other end which took the prawn meat. Towards the end of the trip, a 100g+ gurama(it took some fresh prawn meat given by some malay anglers who were leaving and had leftover bait) and abt 200g stargazer were landed by my frens. Amazing...unfresh bait actually works:P Not too bad for a 2hr long fishing trip. I was expecting a blank day judging by the short time span and shittines of the baits....
