SuperMemo Manual
Chapter 2.8

Using the SuperMemo Software:
Viewing Cards

The Card View allows you to look at the items in the current category as if they were placed on top of each other in a pack of cards. You can view both sides of each card (question and answer), and you can move from one card to another. The cards are ordered in the same way as in the Item List view.

This chapter shows you how to work with your pack of cards in the following topics:

*   Standard navigation and scrolling

To flip the card, i.e. to switch between the question and answer side, tap one of the two Q/A buttons.

To move to the previous or the next card, tap the left or right arrow at the bottom right corner of the screen. If an arrow is not present, it means that you have reached the top or the bottom of the category card pile.

If there is more text on the card and it cannot fit the screen, you can scroll the card using the up and down arrows located in the bottom right corner as well.

*   Stylus-free navigation
You can navigate through the pile of the cards in the category without touching the screen. This is very useful if you want to learn on the road. You can hold your handheld device in one hand only and use your fingers to press the six hardware buttons.

If you want to use the four hardware application buttons to launch their assigned applications instead, you need to tap some silkscreen button first, e.g. the Applications or the Menu buttons on the left of the Graffiti area. Of course, you can also leave the Card View screen.

To flip the current card and switch between the question and answer side you can press either button #1 or button #4.

    Press button #1 or #4 to flip the card

To move to the previous item in the pile of cards press button #2. To move to the next item in the pile press button #3. You can hold the buttons down to move through the pile quickly.

If there is more text on the card and it cannot fit the screen, you can scroll the card using the hardware Up and Down buttons as well.

*   Committing an item

If you see an item that has not been committed into the learning system yet, it will have a Commit button. If the item is committed already, the button will not be visible.

To commit the item to the learning system, just tap the Commit button. The button will disappear and from now on SuperMemo will take care that you do not forget the item. It will be automatically placed into the drill for you and you will see it in a test in a day or two.

    Tap the Commit button

*   Editing an item

To edit the current item, all you have to do is to tap anywhere on the card. You will immediately get into the Item Edit screen.

Another way to get to this screen is to use a menu command or to write an enter (aka return) Graffiti character, which is a move from the top right to the bottom left corner of the Graffiti area.

To learn more about editing items in the Item Edit screen see the Editing Items chapter.

*   Menu commands

To open the menu, you need to tap the lower silkscreen menu button left of the Graffiti area.

In the menu you will find four operations that apply to the currently displayed item. These commands are:

  1. Edit command will switch into the editing mode and will allow you to make changes to the current item. The same action can be accomplished by tapping anywhere in the card or by writing an enter Graffiti character.

  2. Drill command will insert the current item into the drill of the current database. If the item is in the drill already, nothing happens.

  3. Reset command will reset the learning progress of the current item and remove it from the learning process. It will not delete the item itself, it will only delete its stored learning progress data. Of course, if the item is not committed, nothing happens.

  4. Delete command will delete the current item from a database. It will remove both the item and its learning progress data. It cannot be undeleted later.
Note that you can also access all menu commands without opening the menu. Just write the menu shortcut character, i.e. move your stylus from the bottom left to the top right corner of the Graffiti area, and follow it with the letter shown next to each menu command (/D for Delete for instance.)
