| Talking With Family and Friends
One of the most important things you can do in discussing your
condition with family members and friends is to be honest with them. Tell them what is happening to you and how you are treating your condition. You may want to include the following issues:
- Explain how you are taking steps to make yourself better, starting with recognizing what you have is a treatable condition
- Let them know there might be times when you just need them to listen and other times when you ask for feedback and advice
- Ask them to attend a local support group meeting with you
- Let them know that with your condition you can't just "snap out of it" or hope it goes away by itself
- Your friends and family members can be the most important resources you have during your treatment. So long as they understand the course you're on, they can help you at every step along the way. Some of the things they can do include:
1. Encourage you to stick with your treatment
2. Accompany you on your doctor visits
3. Be there when you just need someone to talk with
4. Go with you on outings and walks to the movies or other activities
Many communities have support groups for family and friends. They can receive emotional support and accurate information about your condition at these group meetings. Participation often leads to better quality of life for you, your family and your friends as you recover.
