My Best Devotion ~ Julie Sue

I attended Julie's concert in Malaysia's Genting on Christmas Day.

There were about a few thousands who attended the concert. The whole concert basically followed the concert held in Singapore in May 99.

The concert started on 8.25 pm as the seats were filled up quite slowly. Julie thanked her Malaysia fans after singing the first song. But I think there were fans from China, Singapore, etc among the fans.

The fans were not that "hot" as compared to her concert in May 99. I think it's because those who came to Genting may not necessary were her fans. 2 tickets were given free for a room booked on 24 or 25 Dec. Unlike the concert held in Singapore where the fans "paid" to watch the concert. They were more "die-hard".

I noticed that the escots/security officers did not stop fans from taking photos, going near the stage to present flowers and to request for autographs. That will never happen in Singapore. :P

Special guest was still Lou Da You. Beside the songs sang during the May concert, he sang together with Julie, "Silent Night".

Following were the 17 songs Julie sang (a subset of the concert held in May):-

Without You
Papaya
Silent Night

No babe, but Su Rei's still hot

Big Sister Of Pop

Her movements may be a little restrained, but Chinese singing queen of the 60s, Julie Su Rei, was back on stage to win the hearts

By IDA SIOW

AT 45, doyen of the Chinese pop scene Julie Su Rei may not have the sizzling moves of Taiwanese la mei (hot babe) Ah Mei, but last Saturday night at the Harbour Pavilion, she left no doubt that she is still a powerhouse to be reckoned with.

That inimicable throaty voice held audiences enthralled for more than two hours as she took them through a blistering tour de force of songs spanning her 20 albums over the past 15 years.

From the beginning, it was apparent that Su-Jie, as her fans fondly address her, was here to please. Dressed in a dazzling white ensemble, she began her concert mingling in the midst of the audience, taking pains to shake every hand stretched her way, before moving up stage and launching into an energetic rendition of Love Comes, coaxing the audience in no uncertain terms to Show Me Your Love.

When she paused to take a breather, all she had to do was flash that still ebullient smile and croon "Singapore, ni men hao mah? (how are you?)" to elicit enthusiastic "Hao!"s (Good!) all round.

Forget Faye Wong nonchalance and distance, this dame is sugary charm personified. She promises obligingly: "Besides Chinese songs, we'll have English, Cantonese and Hokkien songs."

There was certainly something to please every palate. From her signature sentimental ballad Follow Me to the upbeat rhythms of rock number Follow The Feeling and the frantic percussion piece Pa Pa Ya, she had the 70 per cent capacity crowd eating out of her hand.

With no spectacular pyrotechnics and only two costume changes that night, Su filled the stage thorough sheer force of her stage presence and relentless vintage vocals.

Made up of snowy-haired grandparents, lacquered tai-tais and even teenagers, the unlikely crowd at this concert clapped, stomped and sang their way through the night. Attending a Su Rei concert can even seem a family affair with several three-tiered families spotted bopping along happily to her vigorous tunes.

Temperatures soared palpably when Su showed some moves together with a sinuous bald dancer, as her full-throated vocals caressed, treacle-like, the sensuous jazz piece Confident.

Who cared that the dancer's swivelling hip gyrations rivalled Ricky Martin while Su's steps were rather more restrained? She may not have had the lithe limbs, but that incredible voice more than made up for it.

It overpowered the three helpless back-up singers, who were barely heard throughout the programme. Guest artiste, Taiwanese singer-composer Luo Da You, had to remonstrate cheekily: "Turn up the volume on the mikes! Su Rei sings very loudly, we cannot lose to her."

Luo also had the crowd in stitches with his comic banter. Wheezing into the mike after singing Secret Love and Pearl Of The Orient, he explained self-deprecatingly, "When people are asked to appear in a Su Rei concert, they run away, because they are scared they cannot measure up. For me, since I am a composer, it is all right that my singing is not good."

Contrary to his comments however, the highlight of the evening for many was their romantic duet between Luo with the latter on the piano singing a crowd favourite Follow Me. Not surprisingly, the entire hall hummed along.

Besides power-packed singing, friendly conversation and ribaldry between the star and her fans marked the night, peppered with Su's tinkling girlish laughter. When Su told her fans about back-up musician Ricky He, "a close friend", and asked "You know how we met?", there was an immediate lusty cry from a male fan, "Ta Pao Ni! (He chased you!)". "No lah." Su replied, amused, "I'm like his big sister."

It was strangely moving to see balding middle-aged men reach up with faces lit like adolescent schoolboys to clasp her hand as she walked among the stalls. Even more impressive was the sight of grandmothers waving neon lightsticks to show their support.

And Su was moved to the point of tears. Sniffling gently near the end, she said "At first, I was afraid that you'd all forgotten me. But your enthusiasm and warmth have truly made me happy."

As the matronly slippers, sleek Pradas and platform sneakers padded out, satiated after three rip-roaring encores, it was evident to all that Su's concert was a triumph of substance over style. And Su-Jie, of course, we haven't forgotten you.

I finally attended Julie's concert yesterday! I've waited more than 10 years!!!

There were 4 000+ fans who attended her concert. At first I was a bit worried that it will not be successful with at most 1 000 fans.

This is a good indicator to other production companies who want to arrange 實 力 派 singers to stage concerts here in Singapore. I remember that I heard from a guy from a production company that said that singers like Julie and Tracy, at most they can attract 400 to 500 fans to their concerts. Julie had proved him wrong yesterday!

I really have to take my hat off to Julie's powerful voice. She can sing non-stop for 1 hour plus without drinking a drop of water. What's more, her songs were mostly rocks and pops. Special guest, Lou Da You already can't continue after singing 2 songs, 暗 戀 and 東 方 之 珠 .

There were 3 安 哥 with the fans clapping and shouting and stepping on their feets. Julie nearly cried.

The concert began with Julie coming in from the side door, singing "Love Will Just Come Like That". She walked towards the audiences and shaked their hands. She also walked down the stage when singing 牽 手 .

Altogether, she had only 2 outfits for the 2 hours plus concert. We paid well worth money to enjoy her songs, walking down our own memory lanes. This is the kind of concerts that I wanted and not those which cost so much, paying for laser displays and fireworks.

Following were the 27 songs Julie sang:-

Without You
Papaya

I just attended YES 93.3FM I'm so excited listening to Julie LIVE and in studio where there were no distance between her fans and herself. I was also surprised to see so many young (esp. girls in their teens) fans supporting her. She thanked all her fans who have supported her these years and that she wanted to remember all our faces. She also requested her fans to support her when she holds her concert in May next year.

After 2 hours of performance, we went to a meeting room where we have her autographed on our own copies of her albums, posters, etc. And also not forgetting taking photos. Below is a photo taken together with her:-

Julie Sue's new album 愛 就 這 麼 來 has been released today. She sang "河 " with Ah Mei. And she re-recorded some of her old songs, "變 ", "是 否 " and "也 算 是 奇 跡 " with new music and voice. (Live)" was also recorded in the album. This was the version she sang in Ah Mei's concert. I was a bit disappointed with only 5 new songs. Nevertheless, I like the cover, very refreshing and the injected new life into the 5 old songs.
