A Guide To IDT Processors
Winchip / Winchip 2 / Winchip 2 3D / Winchip 3

  • The IDT Winchip processor (C6):

The Centaur IDT-C6 processor is a 5.4-million transistor device manufactured using a 0.35 micron, 4-layer-metal CMOS process. The processor being only 88mm2 is 40 to 50 percent smaller than comparable Pentium-class processors. The small die size and low power is achieved by simplifying the architecture and eliminating or reducing complex logic found in other processors. This provides Pentium-class performance at lower power and price levels. The processor includes MMX technology and operates at up to 225MHz.

  • The IDT Winchip 2 processor:

The C3A at 90mm2 is similar to the C6 but it incorporates a new superscalar dual pipelined MMX unit, a more robust FPU, branch prediction and a 4 way addressable data cache. These modifications upgrade the floating point capabilities of the processor to a level comparable to that of the AMD K6 3D.

  • The IDT Winchip 2 3D processor:

The Winchip 2 3D incorporates the 3D Now! instruction set into the standard Winchip 2 processor. However, IDT's implementation of the 3D Now! instruction set is less well designed than that of the K6 3D.

  • The IDT Winchip 3 Processor:

Unlike the competition, IDT has decided not to integrate an on-chip level 2 cache into its next generation processors. Instead, the Winchip 3 features 128Kb of level 1 cache.
