Founded in 1968 by Robert Noyce and Gordon Moore, Intel has grown over the years into a huge corporation whose technology not only is at the cutting edge, but also sets the standard for the desktop microprocessor industry. The 1.2 million transistor 486 is the first Intel processor to incorporate a Level 1 cache (8Kb). Avaliable in 2 variants and speeds of up to 50MHz, the DX model has a built in math coprocessor while the SX doesn't. This is a clock doubled 486DX meaning that it runs at twice the speed of the motherboard bus speed. Clock doubling was a clever trick that allowed the speed of processors to keep increasing even though the motherboard speed had hit a maximum. A very popular model was the 486DX2/66 which had a 66MHz 486 processor running on a 33MHz motherboard. Although called a DX4, this is a clock trippled version of the 486DX. The number "4" is a little misleading. But DX3 doesn't sound that good does it? |
