Processor Recommendations

This really depends on what you want to run. For a business user who only wants to run Word and Excel, there's little point in going all out for a Pentium 2. In this area, the Cyrix M-II (a high clock speed IBM 6x86MX) can provide solid office applications performance at a rock bottom price. The Pentium MMX peaks out at only 233MHz and is no longer very attractive. I'd also recommend waiting for a while and having a look at the performance of the K6-3 before making a purchase. If it can live up to all its hype, this processor promises to provide better than Pentium 2 performance for a lower price. Those looking for good CAD/CAM performance will do well with the Intel Xeon processor. Although it is a little expensive, the option to add more processors at a later date might translate into savings in the future.

The ratings are based on a scale of 1 to 6 and reflect the performance of each processor relative to one another. A high value indicates good performance in that particular field. It should be noted that these ratings are only an arbitrary scale and are deduced from benchmarks performed and reported at numerous hardware sites.
