  16. How to rebuild the Windows boot.ini.

    Users who have a corrupt or missing boot.ini file, are running Microsoft Windows XP, and have a Microsoft Windows XP CD can rebuild the systems boot.ini file by following the below steps.

    1. Insert the Microsoft Windows XP CD into the computer. Note: If you have a system recovery CD or restore CD these steps will likely not work for your computer.
    2. Reboot the computer with the CD and press any key when prompted to press any key to boot from the CD. If you do not receive this prompt and/or are not able to boot from the CD see document CH000217.
    3. Once in the Microsoft Setup menu press R to open the recovery console.
    4. Select the operating system you wish to use; if you only have Windows XP on the computer you will only have one prompt.
    5. Once prompted for the password enter the Admin password and press enter.

    7. The rebuild process will step you through a number of steps depending upon how many operating systems you have on the computer and how the computer is setup. Below is a listing of the common steps you are likely going to encounter.

    * Prompt for the identified versions of Windows installed. When you receive this prompt press Y if the bootcfg command properly identified each of the Windows operating systems installed on the computer. It is important to realize this command will only detect Windows XP, Windows 2000, and Windows NT installations.

    * Prompt to enter the load identifier. This is the name of the operating system for the boot.ini. For example, Microsoft Windows XP Home users would enter "Microsoft Windows XP Home edition".

    * Prompt to Enter OS load options. When this prompt is received type /fastdetect to automatically detect the available options.
    8. Once you have completed all the available options in the rebuild and are back at the prompt type exit to reboot the computer.

  17. When Windows XP could not start and prompted the following errors : More info
    Windows XP could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS
    \SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM

    \SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SOFTWARE
    Stop: c0000218 {Registry File Failure} The registry cannot load the hive (file): \SystemRoot
    \System32\Config\SOFTWARE or its log or alternate

    Solution :

    Use the Recovery Console Tool
    To restore a damaged registry hive, use the Recovery Console to restore the backup copy of the hive from the Repair folder. The Repair folder contains a copy of the system's registry hives that were created after the first successful startup of Windows XP.
    WARNING : Although data should not be affected by the following procedure, you may need to restore changes you previously made to programs or system settings since the first time you successfully started Windows XP.
    To replace the damaged registry hive and restore the backup copy of the hive from the Repair folder: Start your computer to the Recovery Console.
    Determine if the file that is mentioned in the "Symptoms" section of this article is present, and if it is, rename it:
    In Recovery Console, change to the c:\Windows folder.
    Type cd sytem32\config , and then press ENTER.
    Type dir system , and then press ENTER.
    If you cannot run the preceding command successfully (because the file is missing), skip to http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_sys32.htm (1 of 3)21/03/2004 04:36:44 AM Corrupt Hive
    step 3. If you can run the preceding command successfully, type ren system system.bak, and then press ENTER.
    NOTE : If the message that you received referred to the software file, replace "system" with "software" in the preceding command. For example, you would type ren software software. bak (instead of ren system system.bak ), and then press ENTER.
    Type copy c:\windows\repair\system , and then press ENTER.
    NOTE : If the message that you received referred to the software file, replace "system" with "software" in the preceding command. For example, you would type copy c:\windows\repair \software (instead of copy c:\windows\repair\system ), and then press ENTER.
    You should receive a "One file copied" informational message.

  18. Creating a bootable auto recover Ghost CD : More info

    Step 1
    . MAKING THE NECCESSARY FILES

    Download Bootdisk.exe (810 KB), get yourself a 1.44 MB floppy. You don't need to format it, when the download is done, just run Bootdisk.exe and follow the on screen questions. After the bootdisk is written, copy the file ghost.exe from the directory where you have installed Ghost 6.x or Ghost Personal Edition to this bootdisk. If you have the Personal Edition of Ghost, after you have copied ghostpe.exe to the bootdisk, rename it to ghost.exe.

    The bootdisk has the following menu :

    1. Boot computer with support for CD-ROM.
    2. Boot computer without support for CD-ROM.
    3. Backup/Restore partition/drive with Ghost.
    4. Restore partition/drive with Ghost from CD.

    On the bootdisk there's a little batch file, called REST.BAT. This batch file, when it is burned onto a CD-R/RW with the program Ghost.exe and the image file BKUP.GHO, loads Ghost and tell it to extract the file BKUP.GHO to your hard drive (P1-HDD1). If you look at the batch you will see this line :

    GHOST.EXE -clone,MODE=pload,SRC=%CDROM%\BKUP.GHO:1,DST=1:1

    What exactly does this line do :

    -clone,MODE=pload : sets Ghost in restore mode;
    SRC=%CDROM\BKUP.GHO:1 : points to the location where the image is on the CD-ROM;
    :1 : means partition 1 from the image file;
    DST=1:1 : means hard drive 1 partition 1, in other words C:

    If you have Ghost 6.5 or later, you could get a step further and eliminate the "Are you sure you want to continue" message and make Ghost restores fully automatically. Just add to the line the parameter -sure. The line will then look like this :

    GHOST.EXE -clone,MODE=pload,SRC=%CDROM%\BKUP.GHO:1,DST=1:1 -sure

    Step 2. BURN THE BOOTABLE CD

    Use NERO to burn the Images, put the Bootdisk in drive A: and launch Nero, choose from the New Compilation menu : CD-ROM (Boot). If Nero starts with the Wizard, close it and choose New from the file menu.
    On the boot tab select Bootable logical drive (must fit on CD). In the drop down box select A:\2 MB. Hit the new button.
    Now drag & drop REST.BAT, the Ghost executable Ghost.exe (from drive A:) and the image BKUP.GHO (from the folder D:\Backup). If your Images exists out of more parts, due to the split parameter, just place them on the next CD's, these CD's don't need to be bootable, since Ghost will ask you to insert next medium when the first part is loaded and so on, till the load process is completed.

    NOTE : rest.bat and ghost.exe must be in the root of the CD, otherwise FindCD can not identify the bootable Ghost CD. If you have the Ghost PE (Personal Edition), you must rename GHOSTPE.EXE to GHOST.EXE, because otherwise it won't work.

    If you are satisfied with the contents of the CD, then click from the file menu Write CD. Check the settings and hit the button Write. The bootdisk must be in drive A: and a blank CD-R/RW in the CD-writer. Now Nero is burning the Ghost bootable CD. If you followed all instructions the bootable CD should work fine. But you better try it first onto a CD-RW disk.
