Sultan Shoal Lighthouse

If Changi are the home of the barramundi then Sultan shoal would surely be the home of the big golden snappers. Many skippers, anglers spend many of their night hunting, tracking down these prized food fish and their fighting strength are highly respected by local anglers locally called "ang choh". These magnificient fish are consistently caught in these waters; they ranged from 2 kg to a whopping 10-kg! The best fishing areas would be done at the numerous wrecks off the lighthouse. In the day the buoys around the lighthouse can produce G.T.s, mackerels, queen fish and monster barracudas. For the "ang chohs" the only way to have a chance to land one of these prize fish is to use live squids. One night off the lighthouse can even produce some surprises like monster sharks, rays and even big groupers.

Changi Point

Probably the best bet to land the mighty barramundi is at the water off Changi and also a popular site for queenfish and stingrays. Catching a 6 to 8 kilo barramundi is not uncommon especially the islands off Pulau Ubin and Tekong. These are excellent fishing sites for anglers who are prone to get seasick, as the waters there are dead clam most of the time. The barramundi are consistently caught in very shallow waters, thus it solves the hassle of lugging big weights and you can say to motion sickness goodbye!

Horsburgh Lighthouse,
Eastern Bank

Horsburgh and Eastern Banks are favorite hot spots for local anglers who hunt for good bottom bashing. These sites are well known for their large hauls of snappers, tusk-fish and large diamond-head trevally especially so for the Banks. These trips normally would be organize during the weekends or weekdays, it is a 2-day affair which explains the live-on-board set up.

What to expect? Expect serious bottom fishing for a wide variety of favorite food fish like snappers, trevally, tusk-fish and the elusive jewfish. The best bait for the snappers would be a freshly caught squid, which always guarantees some fish. Live prawns are the best bait for the tusk fish, which only feed in the day. If you are into bigger game try rigging a whole large squid, double hooked, this attracts the attention of the mighty shovelnose shark, nicknamed "rocket" by some anglers. The name explains how is it like when connected to one. Basically if you have a weekend to spare this is the place to try your skill plus some seafood to bring home!

Karang Emas (Malaysia water)

Karang Emas is considered the Mecca for snappers; the red, golden snappers' populations are legendary here. Karang Emas loosely translated means golden coral, in the old days local commercial fishermen use to catch tones of these valuable fish and sell them for a hefty sum, thus using their hard earn takings to buy gold jewellery for their wives or girlfriends, that's how the name originated.

What to expected? Expect a good catch of the snapper families, mackerels, jewfish, grunters, groupers, tusk-fish and large cobias. There are an extremely rich variety of bottom dwellers at the "high rock" even big shovelonose sharks. Occasionally it's possible to hook on to a small black marlin. The rich fish life is attributed to the presence of under water sea mounts, rich reefs and rocky boulders which attracts tones of yellow-tails, slimy mackerels and yellow-tail fusiliers. Large predators in turn are attracted to the vast amounts of marine life. Karang Emas is best fished on a live on board 2-day trip armed with freshly caught squid and live prawns.
