SETUP
My
tank setup is simple. There is bedding, a chew toy, a empty soup mug
(for hiding and sleeping), food dish, and bottle. I couldn't find a
truly suitable wheel for an aquarium or for gerbils. I did manage to
find one that attached to the glass by a suction cup, and that didn't
have spokes which could catch the tails. But my gerbils didn't know
how to use it. They would chew or scratch on it, but wouldn't run in
it. Piglet seemed to be able to run on it for a while, but her legs
kept slipping out. Perhaps it was a little too small for them, and the
walls of the wheel were a little sloping, so it wasn't ideal.
The aquarium tank
is roughly 60cm by 30cm by 30cm, spacious enough for two gerbils. I had
tried to find one with a fitting top as I knew gerbils were likely to
be able to jump out of it, but couldn't find one then. So I cover the
top with two pieces of wire mesh, and lay it heavy with a couple of books.
Piglet would on occasion still find a way out. She aslo likes to jump
up and grab onto the wire mesh, and then in that upside down position,
start to chew on the mesh! It disturbs me greatly when she does that at
night, during my sleep!

CHEW
TOY
|
  |
| What
used to resemble a car is now... a block of wood with holes. A chew
toy also used as a lookout post. Or a launching platform! Now, Piglet
will know what that means! |
|
CERAMIC
MUG
|
 |
| This
soup mug is ideal for taking a nap in. Or for the gerbils to hide
in when they are shy. Or for one gerbil to hide from the other,
ie. when she wants to enjoy a treat all by herself. |
|
RUNNING
WHEEL
|
 |
| Actually
meant for hamsters and probably too small for the gerbils. Not a
permanent fixture in the tank. They do not know how to run in it.
Haven't found a suitable wheel for them. |
|
FOOD
DISH
|
 |
| Nice
dish with attractive watermelon design. Also practical as it has
a stable base and a curved edge to keep the food from spilling.
Usually covered with bedding kicked by the gerbils. |
|
WATER
BOTTLE
|
|
|
| Climb-proof
bottle designed specially for use in an aquarium-style habitat.
No leakage or chokage problems. |
