Astrogeology
Astrology is the study of the positions of the stars and movements of the planets
in the belief that they influence human affairs -- Oxford Dictionary.
From young, I love viewing the stars and gazing the night sky was the last thing I do before I sleep. To me, the stars are so pretty yet mysterious.....where do they come from? Are they similar to meteors? What's the difference between a comet and a meteor? These questions linger around me for so long.
This subject further interest me when I visited the Barringer Meteorite Crater (also known as the Meteor Crater) in Arizona, USA. I was amazed by the actual size and view of the crater and did some research on it. In this page, I try as much to explain and you can read more about Astrogeolgy when you click on the links later on this page.
The Barringer Meteorite Crater is a gigantic hole in the middle of the arid sandstone of the Arizona desert (40 miles east of Flagstaff, Arizona, USA). A rim of smashed and jumbled boulders, some of them the size of small houses, rises 150 feet above the level of the surrounding plain. The crater itself is nearly a mile wide, and 570 feet deep. The impact took place around 50,000 years ago. The metoerite which hit the site probably was originated from the interior of a small planet. It was 150 feet across, weighed roughly 300,000 tons, and was travelling at a speed of 40,000 miles per hour. The force generated by its impact was equal to the explosion of 20 million tons of TNT!!!!!! ----imagine that!!!
By describing in
terms of measurements, you may not be convinced that it's big. Let me show you
another illustration.
The crater placed in New York.
Hmm...now you know the size?.....Size does matter, right?
DO YOU KNOW??
Believe it or not, thousands of meteorite weighing a quater of a pound or more hit the earth every year. However, fear not, meteorites WILL NOT give out mysterious rays which can cause strange mutations in living organisms.
Scientists had identified over 150 proven impact sites. One large enough to form the Barringer crater may arrive as often as once every thousand years. The earth's most recent encounter was the mysterious Tunguska explosion which devastated an area of Siberia forest the size of Rhode island in 1908. ( When do you think the next one will come?)
The impact of Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 on Jupiter in July 16, 1994, created a hole in Jupiter's atmosphere. This explosion, equivalent to more than 100 trillion tons of TNT, would probably have destroyed all life as we know if it hit the earth! Toutatis is one of the nearest of the Near Earth Asteriods, and will pass within four lunar distances of the Earth in 2004. It poses no threat to the Earth for the next few hundred years; but because of its weird spin and chaotic orbit, its motion cannot be predicted any further ahead than that.

I'm sure you all know that there was this big hoo-ha that the asteriod will hit us in 2028 and will lead to Armageddon?....Well, the name of this asteriod is called 1997 XF 11. Read more about it here.
