G. Sreedharan's Little Corner

Hi There I am a lecturer in the School of Engineering at Temasek Polytechnic. My working life before academia has certainly been varied and interesting. The countries I have worked in varied from the deep jungles of Irian Jaya (Indonesia) to the Ham & Cheese heaven that is Parma(Italy).

Although an Engineer at heart, I have always been interested in Computers and Computer Science. The very first computer I owned (way back in 1981) was the 'famous' Sinclair Spectrum. Nowadays I use a Pentium-166 which is a wee bit faster.

My professional interests are in Neural Networks as used in Speech Recognition and Processing. I also dabble in the World Wide Web. I teach WWW and Web Publishing related topics both within Temasek Polytechnic as well as outside of it.

There is already an exponential rise in the number of ordinary people who have started using the Internet due to its "user-friendliness". This will inevitably lead up to a clogging up of the communications arteries not dissimilar to the Bangkok traffic jam at peak hours. But won't technology come to the rescue (hasn't it always!), or will it?

The Information Highway is often said to be a two-pronged sword. In my opinion, this is perhaps a pessimistic view. While there is always bound to be abuse, the advantages it offers far outweighs the disadvantages.

I'm married to Mala and we have two precocious boys, Arjun (9) and Varun (7). Whenever I have a few free moments at home, I enjoy reading on a wide variety of subjects, listening to music or watching the (very) occasional TV.

Of the sites I visit from time to time, here are a few interesting ones. The listed sites do change (slowly) from time to time according to my fancy.

A good starting place for media related news on the Web is Media Central.
Interested in the current traffic situation in Singapore? A SkyCam view may help.
No day is complete without Dilbert. Funny and so true!
Both my kids love the SimCity series of games. Truly educational and interesting.
A nice and powerful search engine that I use is HotBot.
My kids enjoy finding out more about the Solar System. The Nine Planets has some neat stuff.
They claim to be the Earth's biggest bookstore. Do check out Amazon.com Books!.
My two sons often visit the subway navigator, especially the Singapore subway system. [Link put here at the request of Arjun as he loves finding the routes for the subway systems of cities he's been to.]
