A grouse about Banks offering account opening on the Internet
Recently, I had approached two banks about opening Savings / Investment accounts. One sent me a 39 page form in a 1.25MB PDF file for an Investment account [ie trading on NSE/BSE] while another sent me a URL link to a 5 page form for a Savings account. Now, I am fine with banks offering information on the Internet and providing Online Forms on the Internet. But when the bank insists that I must *PRINT* the form, why does it think that I would go through the trouble of printing a 39 page form, particularly with a Grey background ? Fortunately, I have a Broadband connection and also a Printer at home. But this is still a slow printer. I have close to half-a-dozen bank accounts in Singapore and India. I was interested in the Investment account as it would allow me to operate on the NSE/BSE. But I sure as hell wouldn't want to wait for my home printer to print 39 pages with a Grey background. Till a few years ago, these forms were available in hard copy. Even now, I still have to make my own hardcopy and write with a ball-pen on the forms. The least the bank could do is to send me, by post, a hard-copy form. To make matters worse, the bank, with a branch in Singapore, doesn't really allow me to walk in to the branch, request a hard copy and fill in and submit the form. First, they don't service individual customers. Second, they don't keep hardcopy forms at the branch. Third, they ask me to download the form on my own [or register at the website so that they will email me the form] and then offer telephonic assistance in filling out the details on the form. Pshaw ! Customer service ? And why are the forms so long ? Archaic regulations, from RBI, SEBI, NSDL, the bank's own internal controls, God, the Chairman, the Branch Manager ..
Opening a Singapore CDP account and an SGX brokerage account, linking the brokerage account to my Bank account and, later, also adding NASDAQ to my brokerage account were very much easier. Firstly, they [the Brokers and Bankers, not the CDP] offer to fill up the details on the forms [1 to 3 pages] for me, after I have presented proof of name, address and residential status. I merely need to sign where marked. Secondly, the forms are so much less complicated.
