We trust Pervez at our Peril

To quote from the article "If (he) is sincere in proclaiming his desire for peace, we will be able to congratulate ourselves on having reached agreement; if he has other designs or if he has to give way one day to some fanatic we will at least have postponed the outbreak of a war, and that is indeed a gain." .... Wait ... that was what had been written about Hitler !

So what has India achieved ?  Fernandes has declared that infiltration is down.  For how long ?  If Kashmir becomes "peaceful" for a couple of months, Bush and  Blair will forget about it.  Would some others be up  to their old tricks again, then ?  The elections are crucial.  A high turnout --- not forced by the army --- would be a vote of confidence.  Else, the Government must seriously rethink it's Kashmir policy -- why not "hand over" Kashmir to those who think they can rule it, with the proviso that it does not become part of Pakistan ?  An autonomous Kashmir with the Indian Army at its borders and the Indian Rupee as its currency.  People might come to their senses in a 5 to 10 years.
