What is Power Math?
This is a series of mathematics workbook for modern day students from K to 6.
The curriculum prescribed by the NCTM is covered in the early part of each unit. In recognition of the higher IQ level of today’s children, Power Math goes further than existing books by introducing progressively more challenging more stimulating work, at levels above the prescribed requirements, in the latter part of each unit.
The mission here is to augment the level of numerical literacy in the elementary schools at the lowest cost possible.
Pre-requisites to achieving
this end are:
* Practice, practice
and more practice. Cumulative reviews at the end of each
chapter reinforces knowledge
acquired earlier. Repetition ensures that basic ideas
remain permanently etched
in the student’s mind.
* Affordable
Power Math is deliberately
priced low so that every child can own and practice on a math workbook.
* Incremental learning
Slowly but surely, students will master the basic concepts
one by one. In the
acquisition of knowledge, time is a panacea. Strange
new concepts become familiar old concepts over an extended period of time.
* Simple teaching methods
Young minds grasp new ideas
instantly and instinctively. Teachers can be spared
interminable hours of preparation.
Each concept introduced
in Power Math often begins with an example. The teacher’swork goes so far
as to generate a few more similar examples on the board. Children are more
interested in ’doing’ than listening to humdrum theories.
Power Math recognizes this trait in young children.
The simplest and most effective way of imparting Math concept is give a few examples to illustrate the same concept and ask the students to attempt the exercise. Teach one concept at a time. When one exercise is completed, move on to the next exercise. In one math lesson, it is possible to cover three or more exercises.
*Cost effective
One Power Math workbook can keep the child happily
occupied for a whole
academic year. There is no need to purchase expensive
textbooks. Concepts will
be explained simply and the child can start on the workbook
immediately.
Focus only on the exercise
at hand. Avoid lengthy discourse into other unrelated
topics.
Remember the fun part in learning is in the ’doing’ ; not just the ’listening.’
In an article in the Los Angeles Times in March 1997, President Clinton challenged the schools in US to raise their standards of Math and Science to compete with the best in Asia Pacific.
Power Math is designed to assist schools in achieving this goal.
Power Math covers the NCTM and more.
Help the teachers help the
students by buying better and more challenging books, so that the school
standards are in line with the best in the Asia Pacific.
The publisher is committed
to producing the best educational material at the lowest
costs. Books should be cheap and good so that every child has an equalopportunity
to acquire basic life long skills.
