Programmes

Galilee Centre runs two core programmes and three support programmes. The two core programmes are the Headstart Programme for children between the ages of 2˝ and 6 years, and the Learning Stations for children at the Primary School level. The three support programmes are the Night Tuition Programme to help the Secondary School children academically, the Youth Group for the children between 13 to 17 years, and the Mothers' Group.

The children are also provided with opportunities to visit various places, thanks to the generosity of volunteers and benefactors. In some of these outings, the children are paired with one adult so as to stimulate interaction and social skills. These visits also provided experiential knowledge for the children.

During the school holidays of June and December, programmes are arranged so as to provide the children with other skills besides academic ones. Examples of these are when groups of students from various Junior Colleges come to teach the children cheerleading dances with pom-poms or art and craft programmes.

This programme is to prepare young children with the basic discipline and learning skills they need to enter formal primary education. These children are aged between 2˝ and 6 years.

The Learning Stations

This is an individualized programme for children who are struggling in their primary school. This programme allows each child to progress at his/her own pace, such that children acquire language, number, thinking and processing skills through set pieces of work. Facilitators guide them on how to choose and work on a project independently. They also interact with individual volunteers who mediate as role models. This allows the child to grow as a person developing intellectually, emotionally and socially.

The Learning Stations was introduced by Brother John D'Cruz, a La Salle Brother interested in developing the potential of children who are rejected by the present educational system. He founded the first Learning Centre in Penang and now runs training sessions for those interested to learn about its philosophy in both Malaysia and Singapore.

The 3 stations allocated are determined by the present ability of the child. For example, should a child require more practice at written language skills, then stations 4, and 6 may be given. Materials are chosen at the child's preference, with adult guidance to ensure that the material is not too simple or difficult. This takes place regardless of the child's Primary level of education. The child is then encouraged to work independently on the material taken.

Night Tuition Programme

Tuition is provided for some students who need one-to-one attention in specific subjects. The Secondary School students come in one night per week to meet their volunteer tutors who will coach them on the subject they need help in. It is also a chance for these teenagers to form a bonding with an adult who can mentor them in this critical but often confusing period of their lives.

Youth Group

This group mainly comprises of the children who have graduated from the learning stations and moved on to Secondary School. These teenagers meet fortnightly for awareness sessions on growing up and the social issues that they face with their parents and peers. Some of the topics covered were on Boy Girl Issues such as peer influence, friends, abortion, dating, and ambition. Speakers were invited at different times to share on the different issues.

Outdoor activities like hikes to Sentosa, Bukit Timah and MacRitchie are organised for them where they can enjoy nature and spend time together.

Mothers' Group

The Centre believes that parents of the children also need support and encouragement as they often face social, psychological and financial difficulties. A group of mothers gather monthly at the Centre for about an hour to learn English and to share about their own issues and events that affect them. Talks and other health programmes are also organised for them.
