Things to consider when getting a pet
Everybody knows that most small furry animals are cute and nice to keep but before deciding to own a pet, one must first consider the following:
1)Do you have the time and responsibility? Animals are like kids. They need attention and care. When they're sick, they need a doctor and when they're lonely, they need a friend.
2)Is your house pet-proof? Cats like to look for small enclosed areas to snuggle in, so places like the washing machine, video cabinet and cupboards can be potential dangers for them. Dogs like to lick anything and pee everywhere. Watch out for loose wiring and uncovered sockets. You don't want him to get electrocuted yeah?
3)Medical needs and vaccination. All canines and felines have to be vaccinated once a year to prevent them from getting sick as well as you from getting sick. Be prepared to dig a big hole in your pocket to pay for those charges. Doctor fees for animals are much higher than for humans. So its either a hole in that pocket or a hole in the ground. Opps..
4) Pet food and accessories. Feed your pet with food meant for pets and not leftovers from your dinner. Pet food contains the rightful vitamins to meet their healthy and growing needs. Buy a toy or two to keep them occupied and oh, don't forget to get pet shampoo for their bath to keep their coat shiny and fleas free...hehehe
Emotions and Animals
I once witnessed a sad and emotional scene of a cat grieving over its loved one. A pair of young cats were crossing the road when one of them got hit by a motor-biker along Toa Payoh Lorong 4. I then saw the other cat struggling to drag his friend's body to the side of the road. I thought it was a pitiful sight and it reminded me of the song "He ain't heavy, he's my brother" I thought it was in shock because when it saw me approaching, it just abandoned the body to dart into the drain. After I was a few meters away, I turned around and saw that it was staring at me from a hole in the drain. It waited till I was really far away before it came out again to tug at his partner's body. I wonder what was going through that little mind of his when he saw his friend die before him. I think animals go through their own grievances in their own way. It's just that they can't talk so nobody will ever know how they feel.
Abandoned and lonely
I once saw a dog sitting alone at the bus stop. It had its head between its paws and it looked really sad. It wasn't wearing any collar so it may not have been lost but abandoned. From day to day, it would just lie quietly at the bus stop when I passed it but somebody eventually called the SPCA to give it a new home. I guess when animals are abandoned, they'll never be able to understand why they're no longer wanted in the house any more, but dogs usually have a better future because there are more dog lovers out there.
A couple of years ago, I also spotted a very fluffy but dirty white cat along Toa Payoh Lorong 5. It looked like an expensive breed but judging from its dirty coat, it may have been living on the streets for quite some time. It used to join the other strays in the market hunting and it would even challenge the other cats for a fight. Then weeks later, I saw a drastic change in its appearance. It had lost quite a lot of its fur and it was reduced to skin and bones. Over the next few days, I saw an even terrible change. It was limping badly. One of its legs was broken and the wound was exposed. Sympathetic people would bring food for it once a while. As I saw it limp around, I thought it looked weary and tired. Was it sad about its condition? Probably. Did it miss home? The broken limp that hung loosely from his leg may have been breeding maggots by then. I didn't visit that place for a whole month because I was on study leave. When I came back, it was no where to be seen any more. Somebody told me that its time had finally come but it is not known how he died. The next time you know that somebody is thinking of abandoning their pets, just tell them these stories...
An interview with a pet Singaporean.
This handsome feline has very strong views about animal abuse and he speaks on behalf of the animal kingdom. Hear him out folks. We had to coax him with friskies to appear in public. He's actually very shy, you see.
