:::::: I must have included this paragraph in December 2000:
Just back from SMAP 2000 Live concerts in Japan !!!!
What can I say except that it was historic for SMAP !! Takuya's announcement of his wedding, the news coverage, the behaviour of SMAP just before the announcement, and afterwards... Phew! I attended Saitama concerts on 22 and 23 Nov 2000, and Finale concert on 27 Nov 2000. Aw, man... it was great.... !!!

Updated 02 March 2002
...And so does my friend Joey Carbone.
SMAP's 10th anniversary album released in 2001, entitled SMAC, contains two of Joey's songs. Joey's "Shake You Up" was performed during SMAP's 1996 Live Concert hot numbers set, and is also remixed on SMAP B00 HardCore Idol Machine album. Joey's "If You Give Your Heart" was recorded by SMAP's Goro Inagaki as a solo number for a film he starred in some years ago. Also, Joey's song, of title roughly translatable as "Goodbye of Lovers", of 1992 vintage by SMAP. Joey works partly in Hollywood and partly in Japan.

James Brown appears on this album.

LionHeart

It's a bit of an R&B-hip-hop crossover, with a rhythm groove very much like Misia's Unforgettable Days. It has a quiet and low-key sophisticated feeling and styling. The guitar part adds a crisp and almost intellectual touch to the work. It signals a mellowing of the group's musical works?

The coupling song - is that Shingo opening the song? It's a medium-slow ballad. Takuya has a solo that leads up to the chorus. Tsuyoshi opens the second verse. I think SMAP's harmony singing is well carried out on this piece.

ShingoMama O-Ha Rock
VICL-35173
Cross-dressing and getting away with it big-time! I like the Readymade Cliche 524 mix version (track 2). Also includes steps on how to do the O-Ha Rock. For those who still haven't got a clue, please check out Fuji TV's website on ShingoMama. Sold in excess of 1 million copies in September 2000. NOTE: 2001 update: Shingo MaMa has released a second block-buster hit single - look for it on the Shingo MaMa website.

Let It Be
Released 09 February 2000

International like anything, Mon.
It's got an R&B jazzy feel with a good tune, fine instrumentation... This maxi single sure doesn't qualify as bubble-gum pop, for one thing. Probably deserves air time on USA and European airwaves. Its size makes it fit into my car's multi-CD rack, so I can finally listen to a SMAP single while I speed!!

You will find it worth spending an arm and a leg for this one, I tell you. You are greatly mistaken if you think this is typical Japanese-stylisation pop. It is probably the most extreme example of acultural contemporary pop you will ever find anywhere today. Just get it. Lyrics (and score for FLY) in Japanese, found inYoung Song, Shuesha, 1999 July.

SMAP's audio CD, SMAP012 Viva Amigos, puts a lot of other world-class groups to shame!!!!! Get it NOW - and I don't even earn a commission for recommending it! Try ordering from CDJAPAN, if you like buying stuff over the internet. Otherwise, HMV will gladly scalp you for it.

::::::SMAPPIES II
VICP-60719
Not interested in pop, rock, rap, or hip-hop? Here is the JAZZ version of SMAP music!! Featuring cool tracks performed by jazz luminaries such as Omar Hakim! Will Lee! Philippe Saisse! Hiram Bullock! Grover Washington Jnr! Manhattan Transfer! Rob Mounsey! John Scarpulla! And many others!!! I got my album in Queen's East shopping mall in Yokohama, Japan, while visiting for the SMAP Live Concerts.
There are two other albums for those with more traditional tastes in music: one contains symphonic pops versions of SMAP music and the other, string quartet versions. Please see my albums listing for the titles. Great as background music for wedding receptions, late-night listening, cocktail parties, and other sophisticated and genteel occasions!!! Of course, if you are famous and wealthy enough, why not try booking SMAP through Johnny Inc for your special event?! They might exercise their right to refuse to entertain such requests.....

My SMAP Video collection:
(listing up until 02 January 2000 only)
I have updated my official SMAP collection until 2001, but I will no longer be listing the items here. As at June 2000, I have obtained more VHS copies of programmes, but these are strictly for my private knowledge only. Unless otherwise stated, all videos are released by Victor Entertainment of Japan.
::::::1999 Concert Video (VHS)::::::1998 Concert Video (VHS)::::::1998 Concert Video (VCD - not Victor Entertainment release)::::::1997 Concert Video (VHS)::::::1996 Concert Video (VHS)::::::1995 Concert Video (VHS)::::::SMAPxSMAP vols 10, 11, 12, 13, 14 and 15 (includes Bistro SMAP) VCD (not Victor Entertainment releases)::::::FNS 1997 all-star TV game hosted by SMAPxSMAP VCD (not Victor Entertainment releases)

::::::I've also watched SMAP on the video versions of the 1996, 1997 and 1998 Red and White Contests. All looking good, progressively presenting a more mature image and sound, gradually doing away with the boy group styling.

My DVD and VHS originals are purchased from CDJAPAN. In Singapore, I can also find licensed VCDs of SMAP programmes and individual members' TV dramas at DaDa Records (Funan Centre), various VCD shops at 2nd and 3rd levels of Suntec City, at Sim Lim Square (try Odex Pte Ltd at unit 03-87 - they have Hong Kong catalogue of SMAP programmes), and many many other shops in HDB estates and shopping centers all around the island.

The 1998 Concert VCD has a bonus track of their 1999 single as a music video!!

I thought SMAP had weak vocals, but surprisingly, Takuya K and Shingo K attempted some pretty complicated 2-part jazz harmonies and carried the job out pretty well (1997 concert). The guys can seriously ENTERTAIN. (Yeah, I like the part in the 1998 concert where Shingo K dropped his trousers, as if by accident - Hah!). Tsuyoshi's solo rap number is HOT!! (1997 concert). Takuya's solos (hard-rock for 1997 concert and jazz-hip-hop for 1998 concert) are so different musically and in performance style, and very difficult ones, but he does it all so well.... Goro has a fascinating and wonderful New Age solo (1997 concert), and Nakai struts his good stuff during his rap and dance solos (1997 and 1998 concerts). Shingo, my personal all-time favourite, was killer sexy in his 1995 bare-bodied rap item with now-ex-member Mori. He sang a very sweet solo for the 1996 concert, and thereafter stuck to noisy, lively numbers (1997 and 1998 concerts).

Link updated and working 02 March 2002:
My 2 Fav SMAP Men
Although Takuya flaunts his sensuousness all over the place at every opportunity, it is Shingo who has explicitly bared all (full rear nudity only) - and repeatedly at that - in his TV drama "Dead Zone In Zeus" (or The Invisible Man).
More of Shingo in the raw in An-An magazine no. 1165, 1999, which is not available in Singapore. Nice bod, Shingo, very nice bod..... Better than Bond (007): Tetsuya Asakura played by Shingo in the action TV drama series Yomigaeru Kinro, which aired starting 17 April 1999, in Japan. Never seen any male specimen look and move so good as Shingo does on screen here.

Updated 02 March 2002; last updated 02 August 1999:
I made this multimedia artwork some time ago. It's part of a very basic collection, but I like the overall effect. You may need broadband to access this area.

Sorry, the following items are no longer available.
Takuya emanates explicit sexuality, while Shingo's sexiness lies beneath his sweet boyishness. Argh, it's not meant to sound like that, but when you can get Shingo to stay still for a moment, you get some really good shots of the man.

My Shingo-crazy website is HERE.

Sorry, I have removed the Kimura pictures for the following item:
Of course, you can admire Kimura Takuya for his gorgeous drop-dead charm.....

But I think Kimura prefers his talent to be recognised, so give his performance a listen here. (Link updated and working 02 March 2002; 07 August 1999)

I made a fun Bistro SMAP page - listen to a RealMedia hip-hop rap skit of a recipe spoken by a woman with a very British accent.
(For those of you who are unfamiliar with Bistro SMAP, it's the group's gourmet cooking TV series, in which they actually put together some delectable meals for guest stars, on a team competition basis among themselves.)

Eva's SMAP website is HERE.
She updates her website often. Good archival source.

TinTin's SMAP website. She's put in a lot of effort to make some nice graphics of SMAP.

Wow!! This Goro Inagaki website has beautiful design aesthetics! Please take a look for yourself!! (added 06 August 1999)

I am not responsible for content on websites other than those managed by me.

Conclusion:
SMAP are excellent entertainers, not to be lightly dismissed as fluff produced by the Japanese entertainment industry.
