"Jane Roe" (of Roe v. Wade) to Become Catholic

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Front Royal, VA - 15 June, 1998 - Fr. Richard Welch, CSSR, JCD, President of Human Life International (HLI), the world's largest pro-life organization, expressed delight with the news today that Norma McCorvey announced her conversion to Catholicism. McCorvey is the "Jane Roe" of the infamous Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision which legalized abortion on demand in this country in 1973.

"Miss Norma, as she likes to be called, spoke at the HLI world convention in Houston in April, and 2,000 attendees had an opportunity to be moved by the compelling story of how she was misused by the abortion industry," said Father Welch. "Abortion profiteers like Planned Parenthood saw in Miss McCorvey an opportunity to lie and deceive the high court into passing an immoral decision which has resulted in the death of millions of babies in America."

McCorvey attributes a number of things have led to her conversion, including the "peaceful, prayerful, and persistent Catholic presence at abortion mills." She also credits HLI with influencing her decision. "My experiences at the HLI convention in Houston was one of the factors helping my decision to go into the Church. I saw such unity of purpose and love there," she said.

McCorvey made her pronouncement while attending an ecumenical service at Trinity Church in Waco, Texas. Rev. Daniel Vinzant, pastor of Trinity, an Evangelical Protestant church, likewise "supported McCorvey for her decision to complete the journey of her faith."

McCorvey and her acceptance of Christianity first made national news in 1995 when she was baptized by Rev. Flip Benham, director of Operation Rescue - National. Since then she has "continued to grow in faith."

"For the past few months," McCorvey said, "I was considering the completeness of my new found faith in Christianity. I want to thank God, who is My Holy Father, My Lord Jesus Christ, and the Blessed Virgin Mary, for helping me. I now want to complete that process by coming home to my Mother church, the Roman Catholic Church."

McCorvey will receive the Sacrament of Confirmation in Rome, following completion of her instructions in the faith with Fr. Edward Robinson, pro-life coordinator for the Diocese of Dallas.

Through her new ministry, Roe No More, McCorvey plans to travel and speak extensively about the help and counseling services available to aborted women, and to those considering or being pressured into an abortion.
