If you are considering a career in special education, here's what you can look forward to . . .
Note : *Community worker, case worker - titles held by a person who does not have the social work qualifications but is doing related work.
How You Can Become A SPED Teacher Non-degree holders or "unrelated" degrees If you are interested in becoming a SPED teacher, get in touch with any of the VWO SPED schools listed on NCSS to register. After a minimum of 6 months' teaching, you will be eligible to enrol for the special education teaching courses conducted by the National Institute of Education (NIE). The courses are usually sponsored by the VWOs. You may have to fulfill a bond of 1 to 2 years. You are expected to carry out teaching duties and attend classes. Apply online here. The NIE presently conducts two courses to prepare candidates for a career as qualified SPED teachers. These are the Certificate in Special Education (CISE) course for GCE 'O' Level holders, and the Diploma in Special Education (DISE) course for GCE 'A' Level holders and above. Both the CISE and DISE courses take two years to complete. If you are interested in becoming a special education teacher in a special school, please do consider volunteering at a VWO to have a firsthand experience. Just pick up the phone and ask to speak to the principal/administrator/HR dept. There is nothing like seeing it for yourself.
