To be relevant to the society, the modules for sex education should be polled from the community within which sex education will be taught. The method to poll the community is PRA (Participatory rural appraisal).



STEPS IN PRA

COMMUNITY OWNERSHIP OF SEX EDUCATION PROGRAMME IN SINGAPORE
THINK: Who are the STAKE HOLDERS for sex education
GATHER: the community, or representatives of the community
viz politicians, community leaders, religious leaders, teachers, sociologists, sex educators, grass root leaders AND youth representatives:
 

DRINK: tea with them. Lots of tea, lots of lots of tea.
FACILITATE: self discovery
AIM: to encourage community ownership of the programme content
DIRECTION: LePSAS
 Learner Oriented
 Problem solving
 Self discovery
 Action oriented
 Spirit guided

ASK: What did you see?
MAKE SURE they saw what was going on, up till "I am only interested in girls", and not after.

WHY?
In groups of 5, discuss what sex problems teenagers may face
(may discuss all list or short list: may assign different topics to various groups:)
After 15 minutes,
appoint a scribe
collect serially one idea from each group,
scribe to write these on a flip chart
Review the list:
edit, supplement

DO:
Ask: What can we do about it?
Can sex education help?

In groups of 5 (new grouping), discuss what are the topics, knowledge , attitudes, and skills we want young people to have about sexuality.

(may discuss all list or shortlist: may assign different topics to various groups:)
After 30 minutes,
appoint a scribe
collect serially one idea from each group,
scribe to write these on a flip chart
Review the list:
edit, supplement
