185 SQUADRON SAFETY MANAGEMENT
Accident Prevention Investigation
SAFETY is an important concern in any organization as it affects both the well being of the personnel and the productivity of the organization. As such, it is important to have a good SAFETY management system in place in order to ensure personnel can work in a safe environment.
185 Squadron will consist 7 Safety Supervisory Teams (SST). The 185 Squadron Safety Chairman will be appointed by Commanding Officer, 185 Squadron. He will concurrently head the 185 Squadron HQ Safety Committee. The Squadron Safety Chairman will be assisted by the Chairman of the various ship’s Safety Supervisory Team.
Safety Management Training
Safety Manager/Supervisor courses is being conducted regularly to provide training in safety management for identified appointment holders. This in line with the instruction by Chairman, 1st Flot SMC to train all safety appointment holders onboard within 3 months from date of their posting.
In order that safety appointment holders are given a
comprehensive understanding of their duties and responsibilities, all Chairman
of SC/SST are to ensure that at least 50% of its members have attended safety
courses conducted either by RSS Panglima SNT or the Ministry of Labour.
Motorcyclist Defensive Riding Course
Due to the increasing number of traffic accidents involving motorcyclist, all chairman of SC/SST are to encourage all motorcyclists in their unit to attend the Motorcyclist Defensive Riding Course conducted by the Traffic Police. As part of MINDEF/SAF's effort to promote safety and welfare, the SAF Welfare Council had approved the recommendation of the Committee for the Promotion of Safety Efforts (CPSE) for a 50% subsidy to encourage MINDEF/SAF personnel to attend a half-day Defensive Riding Course at the Bukit Batok Driving Centre (BBDC). Safety Forum
Safety
Forum is conducted every month to promote safety awareness in 185 Squadron.
Every ship will take turns to conduct the safety forum with a different safety
theme.

Accident Prevention Investigation
All incident/accident involving servicemen from 185 Squadron will be examined in detail to identify and arrest safety problems and to provide swift corrective action. Accident Prevention Investigation (API) report should be submitted for all work and sports related accidents within two working days. All chairman of SST will render assistance to the Squadron Safety Chairman in such issues.
In addition, Chairman of SC/SST should meet at least once a month to discuss all matters pertaining to safety. A copy of the minutes should be forwarded to Naval Inspectorate.
Safety Inspection Schedule
- Squadron Safety Chairman will carry out safety inspection onboard all MGBs on
quarterly basis.
Conduct of Safety Inspection - Unit SST will be informed at least one working day before the scan. At least one member of the SST is required to accompany him during the scan. The unit Commanding Officer will be briefed upon completion of the scan. A checklist for the safety scan is attached in Annex D.
Safety Inspection Report - A report will be sent to the unit Commanding Officer and copied to Squadron Commanding Officer.
Award and Recognition -
The points awarded for the safety inspection will be included in the computation
for the Best Ship Award.
Inter-Squadron Safety Audit
– Safety audit are conducted between the 3 units, namely 185 SQN, 188 SQN and
189 SQN on a quarterly basis.
