The mansion where documents were found, which may show that Rock & Roll originated from early Chinese migrants has an interesting background story of its own.

The mansion, one of many along Gurney Drive was being refurbished into a cafe, a common fate.

The descendents of the original owners, found that faced with the dilema of expensive upkeep of these vast estates or be a contributory factor to the loss of one of Penang's heritage, this was the lesser of two evils.

The other alternative was to sell them off to property developers, and divide up the proceeds. The manors would then almost invariably be demolished to make way for condominium development. Either way, they meet undignified ends.
