In addition to millefiori paperweights, Perthshire also produces lampwork designs. Lampwork is a process of assembling and shaping small components of coloured glass into complex patterns.
Each of the processes used at Perthshire – even down to the final polish, is carried out by hand. It is a highly specialized and patient art of paperweight and decorative glass making. Every Perthshire Paperweight is an original and no two can ever be exactly alike.
“Enthusiasts will claim that paperweights represent the ultimate attainment in glass artistry and craftsmanship. Compared with other forms of art glass, the paperweight makes greater use of refraction, providing images of the encased motifs that vary in size and aspect, and this adds an air of mystery for the viewer.” – Pat Reilly, Paperweights.
Perthshire Paperweights are sold in many famous shops around the world and can be seen in several Palaces and museums. It is a particular accolade for the craftsmen to know that examples of their work are on display in such places as the Art Institute of Chicago. The Art Institute houses a world famous art collection, including a display of glass paperweights.
Many paperweights are bought by an increasing number of collectors. Last year’s design is considered this year’s collectable. So much so, that many Perthshire Paperweights, just a few years old, change hands at specialist auctions for well over their original sale price.
Besides a range of limited editions for serious collectors, there is also a general range of unlimited paperweights – the ideal start to a collection or perhaps just the perfect gift for that special occasion.
