• EMPLOYMENT   HISTORY:

  2000 (JAN.) TO THE PRESENT -- Serving as a TEACHER of the Transcendental Meditation programme, under the auspices of THE SPIRITUAL REGENERATION MOVEMENT FOUNDATION OF SINGAPORE, a registered, non-profit, educational organisation. Transcendental Meditation^© (TM) is the world’s most powerful, scientifically-validated programme for promoting holistic personal growth, organisational excellence, and community development.  Over 600 scientific studies conducted at more than 200 leading universities in over 30 countries demonstrate that TM practice brings significant, cumulative benefits to mind (unfolding full mental potential), body (promoting better physical health), behaviour (improving social relationships and work performance) and environment (creating world peace). Since 1970, research findings on the benefits of TM have been published in over 100 leading academic and professional journals.   1997 (JUN.) TO 1997 (SEPT.) -- Worked at the AEC - OPEN LEARNING GROUP OF COLLEGES (AEC-OL), a major provider of educational programmes from Certificate to Ph.D. level, located at 8 Queen Street, Singapore 188535. Was initially engaged as COURSE COORDINATOR at BRIGHTON COMMERCIAL TRAINING CENTRE PTE LTD, where my duties included administration and marketing of Certificate and Diploma programmes of the Institute of Technical Education (Singapore) and of the London Chamber of Commerce and Industry (U.K.). In July 1997, I received a promotional transfer to the position of PROGRAMME EXECUTIVE at OPEN LEARNING RESOURCES (ASIA) PTE LTD, within the same (AEC-OL) corporate group. Here, I handled administration and marketing for the distance-learning MBA and Ph.D. programmes of the MAASTRICHT SCHOOL OF MANAGEMENT, a leading European, postgraduate business school located in the Netherlands. In both AEC-OL positions, I attended to: programme enquiries; advertising and publicity; telemarketing; processing of applications; collection of fees; student relations; exam invigilation; and scheduling of subjects, lecturers and classrooms; amongst other duties.

  1995 (JAN.) TO 1997 (APR.) -- Served as the WELFARE OFFICER CUM COORDINATOR at the SREE NARAYANA MISSION (SNM), 12 Yishun Avenue 5, Singapore 768992. SNM is a prominent Voluntary Welfare Organization affiliated to the National Council of Social Service. I was responsible for administering / organising the diverse Welfare Programmes of the Mission, including: • a Food Relief Programme -- serving about 120 needy families, monthly; • a Bursary Scheme -- providing annual educational assistance to scores of Primary and Secondary school students from underprivileged backgrounds; • a Meals Service -- catering to about 100 needy individuals each month; • Financial Assistance -- rendering emergency / short-term financial aid to deserving cases; • Referral Services -- referring clients to the appropriate social service agencies; and • the SNM Home for the Aged Sick -- assisting in the management of a model, 224-bed capacity, nursing home for sick and destitute elderly. Was also directly responsible for Annual Fund-raising for the Mission, and for the publication of its Annual Report and its Annual Souvenir Magazine. Independently handled all case investigations, interviews, reviews, correspondence and reports for existing welfare programmes, and the preparation of comprehensive Project Proposals for new welfare programmes. Laid the groundwork for the strengthening of existing welfare programmes and for the creation of new welfare activities (such as a Daily Meals Service, a Day Activity Centre for the Elderly, Low-cost Tuition, Counselling & Befriending Services, etc.), all to consolidate and augment SNM’s well-earned reputation for community involvement and social welfare work.

  1992 (JAN.) TO 1994 (DEC.) -- Was engaged as an ADMINISTRATIVE EXECUTIVE at KOMALAM & CO., a private legal practice in Johor Bahru, Malaysia. Assisted in preparation, editing and translation of legal documents, office computerisation, client service, and other general administrative duties.

  1988 (OCT.) TO 1989 (APR.) -- Worked as a RESEARCH EXECUTIVE at DYNAMIC SEARCH SDN. BHD., Malaysia’s leading Qualitative (Marketing) Research Consultancy, Petaling Jaya, Selangor, Malaysia. Gained useful exposure to consumer psychology, to the focus group discussion method of Qualitative Research, as well as to the marketing and advertising activities of a broad, largely multinational, client base.

  1981 (DEC.) TO 1982 (FEB.) -- Was employed as a DEALER’S REPRESENTATIVE at ASSOCIATED COMMODITIES SDN. BHD., Johor Bahru, Johor, Malaysia.

  1975 (JAN. TO MAR.) -- Worked as a LABORATORY ASSISTANT at the Kulim Palm Oil Factory, KULIM (M) BHD., Ulu Tiram, Johor, Malaysia.

• EDUCATIONAL   &  EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES:
  
  1983 (AUG.) TO 1988 (JAN.) -- Received undergraduate education, on a full scholarship, at MAHARISHI UNIVERSITY OF MANAGEMENT (MUM; formerly Maharishi International University, 1971-1995), a fully-accredited tertiary educational institution in Fairfield, Iowa, U.S.A. -- recognized by the Singapore Public Service Commission. [MUM is a world leader in the study of higher states of human consciousness, an area with significant implications for human resources and organizational development.] Obtained high scores on standardised entrance tests prior to MUM admission (e.g., TOEFL score of 673 (99th percentile) and scores on the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) between the 86th and 97th percentiles in the various categories). At MUM, was placed on the MUM President’s Honour Roll in 5 (of 8) semesters; U.S. National Dean’s List scholar, 1985-86. Graduated Cum Laude (= with Honours) with a BACHELOR OF SCIENCE Degree in PSYCHOLOGY, Jul. 1987. Overall CGPA (Cumulative Grade-Point Average): 3.79 (out of a 4.0 maximum); Major (Psychology) GPA: 3.89.
  
  Degree course-work included: General Psychology, Statistics, Computer Programming, Research Methods, Sensation & Perception, Psychophysiology, Learning & Cognition, Educational Psychology, Developmental Psychology, Personality Psychology, Social Psychology, Vocational Psychology, and Organizational Behaviour, as well as minors in Biology and the Science of Creative Intelligence (SCI); amongst other courses.
  
  Performed part-time College Work Study as well as full-time Volunteer Staff work at MUM during this period. Held vital ADMINISTRATIVE / SUPERVISORY positions in several MUM departments, such as the Admissions, Library, Housing, Housekeeping, and Food Services. In last appointment as Administrative Assistant at the MUM Admissions Office, was engaged in statistical research, data-cum-project management, and liaison with major U.S. educational publishers as well as with nearly every academic and administrative department at MUM. Underwent a 1-month stint (Aug. 1987) as Night Auditor and Front Desk Executive at the BEST WESTERN AIRPORT INN, Des Moines, Iowa, U.S.A. Provided career counselling to MUM students as practicum for the Vocational Psychology course (Fall 1985).
  
  Elected and served as TREASURER of the MUM Student Government Executive Committee, Jun. 1986 to Jun. 1987. Developed, over an active term, sound organisational abilities encompassing administrative, financial, liasing, and negotiating skills, whilst successfully managing a US$60,000 annual budget. Was Co-organiser, Registrar, and Treasurer of an international student conference on ‘The Technology of World Peace’ (MUM, Mar. 1987), attended by 300 U.S. and foreign participants. Received, jointly with MUM Student Government Executive Committee colleagues, the Maharishi Award from MUM, 1987.
  
  1981 (JAN. TO JUN.) -- Enrolled at the SYSTEMATIC BUSINESS TRAINING CENTRE, Singapore, for courses leading to the membership exams of the (British) Association of Accounting Technicians.
  
  1976 (JUN.) TO 1980 (APR.) -- Enrolled in the Bachelor of Science degree programme at LOYOLA COLLEGE, UNIVERSITY OF MADRAS, India. Gained vast student organisational experience; co-founded the MALAYSIAN STUDENTS’ ASSOCIATION, Tamil Nadu (State), India, drafted its Constitution, and simultaneously held the two positions of Assistant General Secretary and Assistant Publications Secretary of the active 150-member body.
  
  1975 (JUN.) TO 1976 (APR.) -- Obtained the Pre-University Certificate of the University of Madras, India, in First Class, with credit passes in all 5 subjects (Natural Science group) including a distinction in French; Class Leader, Pre-University class, MADRAS CHRISTIAN COLLEGE, Madras, India.
  
  1974 (DEC.) -- Obtained the Malaysia Certificate of Education (equivalent to the G.C.E. ‘O’ Level) in Division Two, with credit passes in 6 subjects (Science stream) including a distinction in English -- via ENGLISH COLLEGE, JOHOR BAHRU, Johor, Malaysia.
  
  PRE-1974 -- Secured a Grade ‘A’ pass in the Lower Certificate of Education (1972) with four distinctions. Served as General Secretary, English Literary & Debating Society, and as Treasurer, Bahasa Malaysia Society, at the SECONDARY ENGLISH SCHOOL, PALOH, Johor, Malaysia (1971-72). Passed the Standard Five (Government) Assessment Examinations with ‘A’ grades in all six subjects (1968). Was appointed Prefect (1968) and Head Prefect (1969), TENGKU MAHMUD SCHOOL (2), KLUANG, Johor, Malaysia.

• SPECIAL   SKILLS: Proven leadership and organising skills; excellent communicator -- developed writing, editing, speaking, negotiating and presentation skills; excellent proficiency in the English language -- obtained the maximum 99th percentile ranking, twice, on the TOEFL exams, securing the maximum possible score of 677 in the last instance (Nov. 1989); was the only student in my U.S. undergraduate freshman class to obtain an ‘A+’ grade in the mandatory ‘Writing Skills’ core course (Fall 1983); fair fluency in Bahasa Malaysia, and limited fluency in a few Indian languages; computer-literate -- can ably handle PC applications such as Microsoft Word, MS-Excel, MS-PowerPoint, MS-FrontPage, Adobe PageMaker, etc; licensed driver; natural aptitude for refined handling of people; keen business sense; sound analytical and research skills -- enhanced via past experience in qualitative research and via undergraduate research studies ranging from altruism (helping behaviour) to subliminal perception (unconscious hearing);  am a trained Teacher of Transcendental Meditation^©.
