ANIMAL RIGHTS AND WELFARE

"The greatness of a
nation and its moral
progress can be judged
by the way its
animals are treated."
The great moral philosopher Immanuel Kant said: "If man is not to stifle human feelings, he must practice kindness toward animals, for he who is cruel to animals becomes hard also in his dealings with men. We can judge the heart of a man by his dealings with animals." Statistics on the correlation between animal abuse and crime demonstrate the truth of Kant's teaching. The love of animals is directly related to human love, and such evidence as medical studies on animal assisted therapies shows that the relationship between people and pets is a vital one.
The above enlightening quotations and graphics were obtained from the Bakersfield (California, U.S.A.) Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals at http://academic.csubak.edu/~a15441/1spca.html. This site provides, among other things, a good resource on how to go about adopting pets and making them part of the family.

"I am in favor of animal rights as well as human rights. That is the way of a
whole human being."

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), with
more than six hundred thousand members, is the largest animal rights organization in the
world. Founded in 1980, PETA is dedicated to establishing and protecting the rights of all
animals. PETA operates under the simple principle that animals are not ours to
eat, wear, experiment on, or use for entertainment. PETA focuses its
attention on the four areas in which the largest numbers of animals suffer the most
intensely for the longest periods of time: on factory farms, in laboratories, in the fur
trade, and in the entertainment industry. PETA also works on a variety of other issues,
including the cruel killing of beavers, birds and other "pests," and the abuse
of backyard dogs.
