Smart Card Security Technology

Smart Card Security Technology
There are a number of smart card security technologies. These features are as follows:
Passwords & Biometrics
Personal identification can be done the use of password, token and biometrics. Each has its own advantages and drawbacks. Identification methods can be used in combination such as: a card and a password or a card and biometrics.
Encryption
The other commonly used security technology is encryption. Cryptography allows people to carry over the confidence found in the physical world to the electronic world, thus allowing people to do business electronically without worries of deceit and deception. The perpetual increase of information transmitted electronically has lead to an increased reliance on cryptography. Encryption involves several stages including algorithm selection, keys selection and key management.
Alogorithms
The design of algorithm is often said to be a matter of mathematical specialist. However, the smart card specialist must be must aware of the strengths and weaknesses of the specific algorithm available. There are two main kinds of algorithms-Symmetry Key System & Asymmetry Key System
Keys
Keys hold a vital role in smart card security system. Different types of keys are available for providing different kinds and levels of security in cryptography. Some examples of possible keys are Public and Private keys, Master and Derived keys User and Equipment keys, Key Encrypting keys and Session keys.
