READING CHINESE IN BROWSERS USING DOWNLOADED FONTS

( A )USING NETSCAPE and COMMUNICATOR -:

The steps are -:

1. Install the respective Chinese fonts into your Windows 95 or Windows NT 4.0 and reboot.

If you download Netscape Communicator 4 Preview Release 3 you do not have to edit the registry to view Chinese with this version.)

After downloading the fonts:
To install the fonts, you go to the START menu in Windows and RUN the respective font files to install it,as shown here for ie3lpkcn.exe -:.

2.1Editing the REGISTRY.
For Windows 95 users

WARNING
Backup the REGISTRY first before trying to edit it.

Quit your Netscape and run Registry Editor (regedit.exe for Windows 95 or regedt32.exe for Windows NT 4.0) by launching Run from the Start button.
Double click on HKEY_CURRENT_USER and look for Software.
Once you have the Software folder opened, expand the tree and look for Netscape -> Netscape Navigator -> INTL.
Select Edit -> New -> String Value.
Type "UseUnicodeFont" at Value name field and "1" at Value data field.
Exit Registry Editor and launch Netscape. Go to point 3.

2.2 For Windows NT 4.0 users:
The procedures are the same as Windows 95 users except the executable file name of Registry Editor is regedt32.exe.

3. Select the installed fonts:

3.1 For Netscape 3.0 and 3.01:
Select Options -> General Preferences from the menu.
Inside the Preferences window, select the Fonts tab. Choose Chinese GB in the "For the Encoding" field. Then, by clicking the "Choose Font..." buttons, choose the installed Chinese font (MS Song in this example) in both "Choose Font" windows for Proportional and Fixed fonts.Next ,click OK to exit.
For Big5, the font is Ming Liu
Finally, select Simplified Chinese as the Document Encoding under Options.
Since, the quality of displaying English fonts with Simplified Chinese as the Document Encoding is poor, you can switch Western(Latin1) back on as the Document Encoding when you want to view English web site again.
Depending on your viewing preference, you can "Set Default" as your "Document Encoding" and allow Netscape to display your favourite language automatically.

3.2 For Netscape Communicator 4.02 - 4.04:
Select Edit -> Preferences from the menu.
Next select -> Appearance from the menu.
Next select -> Fonts from the menu and choose as indicated for GB code
(Simplified Chinese)
Next select ->View -> Encoding from the menu
Finally choose Simplified Chinese (GB2312) for Encoding

( B)USING INTERNET EXPLORER 4 -:
NO NEED TO EDIT THE REGISTRY SETTING

Install the fonts as indicated above

4 Select the installed fonts
GB font used here as the example
- Select View -> from the menu.
- Next select Internet Options -> Fonts and choose items as indicated.Finally,click Set as Default then OK to exit.

  5.1 USING NETSCAPE/COMMUNICATOR
  
  For Netscape 3.0 and 3.01:
- Change the FONT and ENCODING as indicated in SECTION 3 ,above for the respective Chinese font.
- Let us show some articles in GB code(Simplified Chinese).The Chinese NEWS GROUP is alt.chinese.text.
- From the Menu,choose Window and click Netscape News
- To view Chinese MAIL, change the FONT and ENCODING similarly
  
  For Netscape Communicator 4:
- Change the FONT and ENCODING as indicated inSECTION 3.2 ,above for the respective Chinese font.
- From the menu,select ->Communicator -> Collabra Discussion Groups.
- Choose your news item.
  
  5.2 USING IE 4
- From the menu,select -> Mail -> Read News.
- Next,select -> Tools ->Options
- Next,select ->Read ->Fonts
- Next,select -> Chinese Simplified(with both MS Song indicated in the Proportional and Fixed Width boxes) -> Set as Default -> OK
- Finally,select from the menu -> View - >Language -> Chinese Simplified (GB2312)
