Pre-Congress Workshops Friday, 27th August 2004 (Plum Room, 5th Level,The New Otani)

Dr Caesar Wong, BDSc, MBBS, MDS, DMD, FRACDS, FHKAM, FCDSHK (Hong Kong)

Session 1: Clinical Evaluation & Treatment Planning / Record Keeping System / CT Interpretation & Surgical Guide Fabrication (9am-11.30am)

This course offers the participants the opportunity to learn the practical skills in the diagnosis and treatment planning of implant case regardless of what implant systems they are using.  Participants will be trained in the use of various imaging techniques particularly CT scan for diagnosis and treatment planning of implant cases.  They will be taught to use a very comprehensive implant patient’s record system so that nothing would be missed out in the various phases of implant treatment.  They will also be taught how to fabricate surgical guide for accurate control of the planned drilling positions and directions at the time of implant surgery thus ensuring maximal safety and accuracy in implant placement surgery.

Session 2: Guided Bone Regeneration / Bone Grafting Materials & Membranes (11.30am-2pm)

Bone augmentation is an inseparable part of the clinical practice of oral implantology.  It is not uncommon to see cases that need implant treatment but there is not enough bone.  Oral implants need good bone both in quantity and quality for their initial placement and perpetuation during function.

This course will elaborate on the scientific basis and the surgical techniques of guided bone regeneration, the various bone grafting materials and membranes.

The participants will perform the exercise of application of bone grafting materials and the Ultra-Ti-Membrane on teaching models.

Immediate Function with Integrated Abutment Crowns and Short Implants (2.30pm-4.30pm)

This lecture is designed to educate dentists about the ease, reliability and predictability of Bicon dental implant treatments.  The elegant design of the 1.5o bacterially sealed locking taper implant to abutment connection and the fin or plateau design of the implant afford the clinician great flexibility with the type of treatments that can be offered.  In addition to conventional implant surgical and prosthetic techniques, the lecture will show how clinicians can offer chairside immediate prosthetic loading/functioning of implants regardless of the quality of bone.  Dentists will also learn revolutionary techniques of cementless and screwless crown restorations known as Integrated Abutment Crowns TM (IAC).  The IAC allows the dentist to restore ideally positioned implants or even poorly positioned implants with the same cost and achieve gingivally aesthetic restorations every time.  Finally, the use of a 6.0 x 5.7mm short implant that has had clinical success since 1997, will demonstrate how many bone grafting procedures may be avoided as well as reducing the anxiety of placing implants near the mandibular alveolar nerve.

Prof G-H Nentwig & Dr Paul Weigl, J W G University of Frankfurt (Germany)

Modern Concepts for Simple and Efficient Dental Restoration Based on Implants for Edentulous or Nearly Edentulous Patients (5pm-7.30pm)

Part 1 : Surgical Concepts (GH Nentwig)

Treatment planning will be discussed.  General and individual limitations will be considered.  Use of x-rays and CT scans and study models to help in treatment planning.

Bone expansion techniques will be discussed.  Bone grafting procedures like sinus floor elevation and repair of vertical and horizontal bone deficiencies.

Bone training procedures will be discussed at prosthetic restoration stage.

The lectures will address all these topics based on our studies and experience with Ankylos implant system.

Part 2 : Prosthodontic Concepts (Dr Paul Weigl)

The advantages of removable suprastructures borne on implants.

A predictable aesthetic outcome can be achieved.  It is less expansive and easily to clean.  The numbers of implants required is also less than if fixed suprastructure is used.  Tissue reconstruction is usually not required.  Older patients may also benefit removal suprastructures as it can be removed for cleaning.

The high long-term success rate of endosseous implants (15 to 20 years) make it necessary to plan suprastructures appropriate to patients’ age at time of implant placement.  The different prosthetic concepts will be described in detail.

Immediate Implant Placement and Loading

Site Development in Implant Dentistry (8pm-10.30pm)

Immediate Implant Placement

Immediate implant placement into extraction sockets is an established technique in implant dentistry.  This lecture will examine the indications for immediate implant placement, surgical techniques and specific challenges related to successfully placing dental implants into extraction sockets.

·          Case selection of immediate implant placement

·          Treatment planning

·          Surgical techniques in immediate implant placement

·          Hard and soft tissue management with immediate implants

·          Clinical cases using Replace Select, Branemark and Nobel Perfect implant systems

Immediate Loading of Dental Implants

Advances in implant design and clinical techniques mean that with appropriate case selection, immediate restoration and function of dental implants has come a realistic treatment option for many of our patients.  Immediate loading may be undertaken in cases ranging from a single tooth right up to a full arch.  Through a series of case presentations this lecture will cover the following topics :

·          Case selection and treatment planning for immediate loading

·          Influence of implant design

·          Sequencing treatment

·          Provisional restorations for immediate loading

·          Post operative management

Site Development in Implant Dentistry

This lecture is designed to introduce participants to more advanced the surgical techniques hard and soft tissue grafting to enhance implant placement and aesthetic outcomes.

Lecture highlights :

·          Review major forms of bone augmentation

·          Ridge augmentation using GBR techniques

·          Soft tissue handling flap designs and suturing techniques

·          Sinus elevation techniques – materials and methods

·          Autogenous bone harvesting techniques

WORKSHOP ON LASER  -

Dr John CHEN (Taiwan) & Dr LEE Wai Han (Singapore)

Laser Application in Implant Dentistry

Workshop on Laser, 29th August 2004

Dr John CHEN, Taiwan & Dr LEE Wai Han (Singapore) “Waterlase”  Application in Implant Dentistry (6pm-8pm)

An evolutionary technique for implant esthetics was developed with the help of an Er, Cr: YSGG laser (Waterlase) without local or topic anaesthesia. The Waterlase was used to remove the gingival and bone tissue above the implant easily within a short period of time. The abutment could be adapted immediately, and the provisional crown and bridge could be placed at the same time to enhance the implant esthetical appearance. The accuracy and appearance of the exposed area was better achieved.

Waterlase can be further employed to care for gingivitis or implantitis surrounding the implant abutment. It was used for gingivoplasty and peri-implant treatments precisely and favorably. In addition, Waterlase was used for frenectomy to improve the appearance and to avoid gingival recession.

Prosthetic materials are usually used to cover the tooth surface when it becomes sensitive after tooth overeruption resulting in occlusion reduction. Waterlase can be used to desensitize the tooth surface without prosthetic materials and local anesthesia. The original structure and color of the tooth could be better reserved.
