MANTRA OF THE FORTNIGHT

Vedic mantras have been part of Indian prayer for centuries. Both guiding and protecting through the vagaries of life.

We begin with the mother of all mantras, the Gayatri Mantra.

It praises HIM as the remover of all sins and ignorance and requests HIM to allow us a peaceful and good life on earth. It is worship of the Sun.

Like the Gayatri Mantra, there is another great Vedic mantra. This is the

Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra.

The Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra, as the name suggests is a life giving and life sustaining mantra. It also leads one to Moksha or the liberation of the soul from the bondages of life on earth. Total Freedom.

In these days, when life is very complex, accidents are an everyday affair; this Mantra wards off deaths by snake-bites, lightning, car accidents, fire accidents,cycle accidents, water accidents, air accidents and accidents of all descriptions.

It also has a great curative effect. Diseases pronounced incurable by doctors are cured by this Mantra, when chanted with sincerity, faith and devotion. It is a weapon against all diseases. It is a Mantra to conquer death.

The Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra is also a Moksha-Mantra. It is Lord Siva's Mantra. It bestows health (Arogya), long life (Deergha-Aayu), Peace, (Shanti), Wealth (Aisvarya), Prosperity (Pushti), Satisfaction (Tushti) and Immortality (Moksha).

ITS RECITATION

On your birthday repeat this Mantra one lakh times, or at least 50,000 times. Perform Havan and feed Sadhus, the poor and the sick. This will bestow on you health, long life, peace, prosperity and Moksha or Liberation, Immortality. Even otherwise, recite this mantra as often as you can.

Om Tryambakam Yajamahe

Sugandhim Pushtivardhanam;

Urvaarukamiva Bandhanaan-

Mrityormuksheeya Maamritaat.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ITS MEANING

We worship Lord Shiva the three-eyed one,
the one who is the master of all senses and qualities and the
one who is the sustainer of all growth.
May He release us from the bondage of death
as a ripened cucumber is released from its stalk
and may He grant us immortality.
(not deprive us of immortality).
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ANOTHER TRANSLATION

We worship the three eyed One (Lord Shiva)
who is fragrant and who nourishes all beings;
May He liberate me from death, for the sake of Immortality,
even as the cucumber is severed from its bondage(of the creeper).
