Capello happy with wrong result

Football Italia

Juventus boss Fabio Capello has conceded that his side were fortunate to beat Udinese on Wednesday. The Bianconeri collected a 1-0 away win to maintain their 100 per cent record, but the tactician has accepted that was probably the wrong result.

"It was a combative game against an excellent side," stated the Coach. "We did well in the first half, but Udinese deserved to equalise after the break."

The League leaders netted thanks to a well worked goal that was concluded by summer signing Patrick Vieira. But they had to thank Robert Kovac for a goal-line clearance, as well as a Christian Abbiati miracle save which did have a hint of fortune to it.

"I was happy with the midfield," added Capello, who decided to initially rest Mauro Camoranesi in favour of Giuliano Giannichedda. "Abbiati made a great save too. I was also content with Manuele Blasi at right-back. He is now convinced of his abilities in that position."

Moggi Agrees With Iaquinta Decision, Moratti Finds It Strange

Goal.com

Udinese chairman Gianpaolo Pozzo has found an ally in Juventus general manager Luciano Moggi. Moggi was one of the few people who defended the Friulani’s chairman for ousting Vincenzo Iaquinta from the team roster on the eve of yesterday’s match won by Juve over Udinese through a Iaquinta strike.

“For me it’s the right way to deal with these issues. They have acted this way before, and the results have always proved them right. We had the same problems with Miccoli, Davids, and Vieri,” he said. “I don’t know the details of the Iaquinta row, but I think they did the right thing,” he added.

No return for Nedved

Planet Football

Juventus midfielder Pavel Nedved has again reiterated his decision to call time on his international career. The gifted schemer is arguably the greatest player to have represented Czech Republic but recently announced his decision to concentrate on club football.

Nedved has stated an utmost desire to win the UEFA Champions League with Juve, as he looks for a fitting end chapter to what has been a glorious career. Recent speculation in the player's homeland has suggested a possible U-turn has been mooted, but this has now been denied by Nedved.

The former Lazio favourite insists he is content with his decision and that he will now solely concentrate his efforts on the Old Lady. ''At my age it is difficult to dance at all weddings,'' said Nedved. ''I'd have played willingly in the World Cup in Germany but my decision is definite.''

Vieira happy with Juve role

Planet Football

After scoring his second Serie A goal in four games, French star Patrick Vieira says he has settled in well to the Juventus side. The cultured midfielder left his comfort zone at Arsenal to pursue a new challenge in Italy and again proved important to the Bianconeri as he scored the only goal of the game in their 1-0 win over Udinese on Wednesday.

Fabio Capello's side are now the only team in Italy to preserve an 100 percent record, due in no small part to the performances of the experienced French international. Vieira has looked well at home in a midfield including the varied talents of Emerson, Pavel Nedved and Mauro Camoranesi, and is delighted at his current situation in Turin.

"It's going really well because I've inserted myself in the team's game," Vieira told Gazzetta dello Sport. "I feel myself with a free mind and I'm able to play in attack too. The goal was really beautiful. [Emanuele] Blasi did a big cross, [Alessandro] Del Piero made a delicious control and he passed me a ball that I only needed to push into the net to score."

Vieira's attacking qualities have been utilised to the full as he also netted against Empoli, and the former Arsenal star is enjoying a much more impressive strike rate than he ever enjoyed at Highbury - albeit at a very early stage of the campaign.

Playing alongside the defensively minded Emerson has afforded Vieira a different role than the one he was accustomed to under Arsene Wenger, and the Senegalese-born star is happy to be able to contribute to the success of the reigning Serie A champions.

"My position on the pitch? It's a little different than usual but really similar to the one I've covered many times with my national team," Vieira continued. "The fact remains we have achieved another three points and this is what really counts."

Del Piero: I know I'm Juventus starter

Tribal Football

Juventus captain Alessandro del Piero insists he always feels he's a starter - despite spending much of this season so far on the bench. Del Piero was influential in Juve's win over Udinese on Wednesday night and he said: "I did not feel strange playing. I feel I am a starter, without controversies, neither tensions.

"To win here is an optimal result. We must only focus on ourselves. Sure Milan and Inter are close behind, but we shouldn't worry about them, just ourselves."

Juventus chief mocks Chelsea's Mourinho

Tribal Football

Juventus director general Luciano Moggi insists Chelsea are no threat to their European hopes. Moggi also believes that far from being the best coach in the world, Jose Mourinho lags behind Juve coach Fabio Capello.

He said: "Capello is the best coach in the world. So that means that he is better even than Jose Mourinho. There is no doubt about this. Roman Abramovich puts in the money. But it is not always that you can obtain everything you want just because you have the money."

Serie A Preview: Udinese-Juventus

Goal.com

This week two teams meet in what could be a promising encounter. Udinese, the up and coming team, vs. Juve, the established power whose octopus tentacles keep growing.

Background

This game could have been far more interesting as if Udinese won against Fiorentina they would have been in joint first place with Juventus. Udinese, have played well till they played Fiorentina. In that game the Viola dominated and played well. Udinese did score two goals, but it was evident that they were tired and they are not used to the rigors of European competition. Remember last year as they bowed out in the UEFA Cup? They are still a solid team, but they face a merciless Juventus which has one thing on the Agenda: Win! Cosmi will have to dig deep and try to salvage lost spirit they suffered due to their first loss. However, he has a full team at his disposal. It is tough, But Udinese always give Juve a run for their money.

Juve want it all this year and by the way they are playing they could. They beat Brugges in Mid week and they dominated and could have scored more. The team is united and their black sheep DP, is playing well and showing what he is capable of. They know that Milan is in crisis, but they too know that Inter, Palermo and Fiorentina are high flying and losing points will not help them. A good result will earn them points which could give them a safety net down the road. Work hard now and reap the rewards later is their philosophy.

Juventus
No suspensions, but Buffon, Brindelli are still injured, along with Thuram, Pessotto and Chimenti.

Udinese
Cosmi has a full team at his disposal.

Players to watch

Iaquinta (Udinese)
A good goal scorer. Can he penetrate the Juve defence remains to be seen. Thuram is injured, so it is possible.

Del Piero (Juventus)
Will start again. Will he reproduce his old form or will he just regress back to the old style: one good others bad. We will see. A threat on the field never-the-less.

Probable starting XI’s

Udinese (4-3-3):
De Santics, Juarez, Natali, Felipe, D. Zenoni, Pinzo, Obodo, Muntari, Candela, Di Natale, Iaquinta. Coach: Cosmi.

Juventus (4-3-3):
Abbiati, Blasi, Kovac, F. Cannavaro, Zambrotta, Lamoranesi, Emerson, Vieria, Nedved, Trezeguet, Del Piero. Coach: Capello.

Probable outcome

Juve are on a high and are not willing to give away points. Udinese face a tough task, however these are the games in which the team can prove its worth and names are made. Udinese can do it, as Juve’s defence is injured, but Juve are no pushovers and they will come out to win and dominate the pitch. Juve to win by 1-0 and Udinese will be suffering from a loss of points. However, they can pick them up in other games.

Udinese 0 - 1 Juventus

Football Italia

A Patrick Vieira header maintained Juve's 100 per cent record and sends Udinese spiraling to their second defeat on the trot.

This was set to be an intriguing encounter between two teams challenging for the top of the table, but the events of the last 24 hours turned even more attention towards the Stadio Friuli. Hitman Vincenzo Iaquinta was sensationally frozen out of the Udinese squad for refusing to sign a new contract, despite the fact that his current deal does not expire until 2007.

Juventus hoped to maintain their 100 per cent record and were still without the injured Lilian Thuram, Alessandro Birindelli and Gianluca Pessotto, while Jonathan Zebina suffered a new setback just two minutes into his comeback at the weekend. Alessandro Del Piero netted a brace against Ascoli and did enough to earn a start instead of David Trezeguet.

Morgan De Sanctis was once on Juve's books, but he had to rush off his line after 13 minutes to close down Zlatan Ibrahimovic. The Swedish international also went close with a chest and volley on Pavel Nedved's cross. Udinese play good football and put together an excellent team move that eventually saw Jose Luis Vidigal thump a half-volley inches past the far post with his left foot.

There was tension on 27 minutes when David Di Michele tried to earn a penalty and was fiercely rebuked by Fabio Cannavaro. Juventus eventually broke through with a fine team move and Patrick Vieira's second Serie A goal. Del Piero's cushioned header on a Manuele Blasi cross allowed the former Arsenal man to come sliding in for a splendid volley.

De Sanctis was alert to react when Ibrahimovic's long-range effort took a massive deflection, but he readjusted his position to palm it out of the top corner. Udinese tried to take a more attacking approach in the second half with Fausto Rossini completing a trident attack. Yet it was Juve who went close with an Emerson free kick that whipped all the way across the area without getting a final touch.

Valerio Bertotto was booked for simulation after falling under pressure from Del Piero. Udinese were taking control now and Di Michele was stopped by Cannavaro at the end of a fine run before substitute Rossini drilled over the bar.

They thought they had equalised when Di Natale found a way round Christian Abbiati on the edge of the box and lobbed towards an empty net, but Robert Kovac performed a goalline clearance at the last moment. Rossini held up the ball and Vidigal's shot was charged down for a corner kick, then from the resulting corner Abbiati was stranded and three different Udinese players failed to get the final touch.

The move continued and Abbiati proved he is still a great shot-stopper, reacting in a split second with his foot to flick Vidigal's header out of the net. It was almost a 'Scorpion' clearance in the style of Higuita. Vieira's looping header was wide of the target on an Emerson cross, then Udinese had timid penalty appeals rejected for Barreto's connection with Cannavaro.

Udinese: De Sanctis; Bertotto, Natali, Felipe; Pinzi (Zenoni 21), Vidigal, Obodo (Rossini 46), Muntari, Candela; Di Natale, Di Michele (Barreto 78)

Juventus: Abbiati; Blasi, Kovac, Cannavaro, Zambrotta; Giannichedda, Vieira, Emerson, Nedved (Camoranesi 72); Ibrahimovic, Del Piero (Zalayeta 72)

Capello: What Milan crisis?

Football Italia

Juventus boss Fabio Capello has dismissed claims that rival Scudetto candidates Milan are in crisis. The Rossoneri have endured a sluggish start to the League season, collecting just four points from three games. But Capello, whose side are already five points ahead of the San Siro outfit, has backed them to bounce back.

"I don’t think they are in crisis," commented the former Milan boss. "The championship is a long one and I know what they can do. Everyone can have a false start."

Carlo Ancelotti’s side lost to Sampdoria on Sunday and already have the chance to get back on track against Lazio this evening.

"We are only at the beginning of the campaign, that is why I don’t think they are in difficulty," continued Capello. "Milan have enormous potential as a team and are backed up by a solid club. I’m certain that they will re-find their touch and soon be back to their very best."

Milan have looked like a distant cousin of the side who amazed at times lack season, with their defence seeming particularly vulnerable this term. However, Alessandro Nesta is looking to silence the critics with a fine display against his former club.

"It will be important to beat Lazio and to do so without conceding a goal," said the Azzurri stopper. "We are working hard to achieve that aim. If that occurs then I’m sure it will be easy for us to get back on the right path."

Capello Reveals Iaquinta Interest

Goal.com

Juventus boss Fabio Capello revealed he is an admirer of Udinese striker Iaquinta, on the eve of the match pitching off the Serie A champs against the Friulani this evening.

“I already wanted Iaquinta when I was at Roma. I liked him even during that time, when few people believed in him. I understood he had the qualities to become one of the most important forwards in the tournament,” said Don Fabio.

Capello said these words before Udinese announced Iaquinta was not going to play against Juve for refusing to renew his contract that expires this June.

New Contract Problems Between Roma And Cassano

Goal.com

The club cannot guarantee the original amount promised to the forward. Roma have told Antonio Cassano’s agent that the Giallorossi are not able to guarantee the promised 3.2 million net Euros per season as it was first agreed. The club had in fact proposed this amount to the player during their meeting in September which had allowed Cassano to re-join the squad after being frozen out of the side for not renewing the contract.

However problems have arisen and Roma will have to decrease their offer. Cassano was asking for 3.6 million Euros for 5 years, but this setback is surely going to complicate matters between the two parties.

Udinese - Juventus

Football Italia

Udinese will be hoping to get their season back on track in this battle of the Bianconeris after their winning start was disrupted by Fiorentina in Week 3. They will have their work cut out though against a Juventus side who have leapt straight to the top of the table with three wins out of three. Even more worrying for the Udine based Bianconeri will be the devastating return of Alessandro Del Piero.

The Turin giants have their own problems though as their injury crisis continues. With goalkeepers Gianluigi Buffon and Antonio Chimenti both out, Christian Abbiati is the obvious choice in that position. But they do have a number of defensive problems to resolve.

Lilian Thuram, Alessandro Birindelli and Gianluca Pessotto are all out, as is Jonathan Zebina after he once again broke down only minutes into his return from injury. This means that central midfielder Manuele Blasi is now set to start the match at right-back, while Robert Kovac will partner Fabio Cannavaro in the centre.

The biggest threat to this makeshift defence will probably come from midfield revelation Sulley Ali Muntari. The Ghanaian midfielder has scored three goals in three games and will be hoping to cause an upset with a goal against La Vecchia Signora. The only change for Udinese comes as Teixeira Juarez replaces Marco Motta in defence.

Udinese (probable): De Sanctis; Juarez, Natali, Felipe; D Zenoni, Pinzi, Obodo, Muntari, Candela; Di Natale, Iaquinta

Juventus (probable): Abbiati; Blasi, Kovac, F Cannavaro, Zambrotta; Camoranesi, Emerson, Vieira, Nedved; Trezeguet, Del Piero

Udinese v Juventus: Preview

ESPN Soccernet

Juventus captain Alessandro Del Piero is looking forward to Wednesday's game against Udinese after his virtuoso performance against Ascoli last weekend. The Juve captain crowned his recall to the starting line-up with a brilliant brace to cap a majestic performance in a 2-1 victory.

"This performance changes nothing for me. I'm already looking forward to the next game and can't wait to get back to training to train hard like I have always done," he told reporters.

Coach Fabio Capello, who has not often seen eye to eye with his enigmatic captain, lavished praise on his star player after his destruction of Ascoli.

"Alex was the main reason why we won the game, he had looked so good in training I knew I had to play him and his performance more than justified my decision," enthused Capello. "His response to being left out of the team over the last few weeks has been brilliant. He has not been involved but he never sulked and behaved like a real professional both on and off the pitch."

Sunday's victory maintained Juve's 100% start to the season and Udinese will have their work cut out trying contain a reinvigorated Del Piero.

Should the Italy international fail to continue that form, though, Capello will be able to freshen things up in attack with prolific Swede Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who replaced France international David Trezeguet early in the second half on Sunday, or even call on the rehabilitated Adrian Mutu.

France international defender Jonathan Zebina may miss the clash after coming off with just four minutes gone against Ascoli with an injury. Emanuele Blasi, his replacement on Sunday, is likely to come into the Juve rearguard if Zebina is ruled out.

Udinese will have the arduous task of trying to take the first points off Juventus this term. Serse Cosmi's men suffered their first defeat of the campaign against a well-organised Fiorentina side on Sunday that featured the in-form Luca Toni.

The Italy striker netted twice in a 4-2 defeat for the Bianconeri, for whom Sulley Muntari and Vincenzo Iaquinta (penalty) scored. However, Udinese will probably name the same side to face the Turin giants that lost last weekend.

It means Iaquinta will be given an opportunity to add to his three goals in three league outings this campaign. Juve will also have to stifle the creative talent of Cesare Natali, who will be hoping to provide hotshot Iaquinta with the chances to score.

Capello calls for Juve focus

Football Italia

Fabio Capello has warned his Juventus side that they will have to be at their best to win at Udinese on Wednesday. The Stadio Friuli outfit, despite their 4-2 loss at Fiorentina on Sunday, have been a revelation so far this term and Capello is wary of the threat.

"There is presently great euphoria in Udine, they feel strong and are convinced of their own ability," stated the tactician. "They are right to have such emotions because Udinese are a good squad and we must play with the greatest amount of attention.

"It will be tough against Udinese because they are a well organised side, dangerous in attack where they have fast and quality individuals. They have a very strong midfield too. They also have some good youngsters like Vincenzo Iaquinta, a player who I wanted when I was at Roma."

The reigning champions have had a relatively easy run of things in Serie A so far this term, but Udinese should provide them with their first real test of the campaign.

"In reality, all games are exams for us," added the tactician. "The fact that we are the only team with maximum points after just three games shows how difficult this championship is for everyone, especially at this point of the season.

"Although the big three – Juventus, Milan and Inter – have strengthened, the others did too in the summer. Palermo, Udinese, Sampdoria, Fiorentina and Roma are realities of the game now. It will be hard for us to ‘run’ as we did last season."

Nevertheless, Capello is optimistic about his club’s chances of success during the 2005-06 campaign.

"We were strong last year and we knew it, but we are now even more convinced of our strength," he argued. "Everyone here occupies an important role in the side and everyone is working hard to carry the water to the same mill. That is what allows us to target certain objectives."

It’s unclear at this stage what sort of line-up Juve will start with, but there are whispers which suggest Alex Del Piero could be relegated to the bench despite his brace against Ascoli.

Capello wary of Milan

Planet Football

Juventus boss Fabio Capello remains wary of Milan despite their indifferent start to the season. The Bianconeri hold a five-point lead over Milan after just three games of the new season and Capello is refusing to get carried away. "The league is long and I know Milan's potential," said Capello. "A false start can happen to everyone. Sometimes it's only a short episode."

Juve look to maintain their 100 percent start to the season against Udinese on Wednesday and Capello expects a tough challenge. "It will be tough against Udinese because they are a well organised side, dangerous in attack where they have fast and quality individuals. They have a very strong midfield too," added Capello.

Ibrahimovic Respects Del Piero

Goal.com

The Juventus forward paid tribute to his captain during an award ceremony. Zlatan Ibrahimovic won the best foreign player of the year in Serie A at an award ceremony, Eurochampion, held in Udine, during which he was asked to comment about team mate and captain Alessandro Del Piero. “He’s a great professional, a great captain and a great player. He will be very important for our season.”

Ibrahimovic believes it is too early to place Juventus as the favourites for the Scudetto, despite winning the first three matches of the season. “It’s really too early. However we are a great team and want to continue this way.”

After winning the Serie A best foreign player of the year, the Swedish forward’s next objective is the Golden Ball. However he reckons that it will not be this year. “I see two or three other players for that award,” concluded the former Ajax player.

Real Madrid's Salgado still in Juventus sights

Tribal Football

Real Madrid fullback Michel Salgado remains in Juventus sights. It's emerged that Real offered Salgado to Juve on August 23 as they prepared to welcome Cicinho from Sao Paulo. But the Brazilian's failure to secure his Italian passport before the close of the summer market scuppered the deal.

Juve are maintaining contact with Real leading up to the January transfer window, with Cicinho due in Madrid over Christmas. Juve director general is eyeing Salgado as injury concerns persist over Lilian Thuram, Gianluca Pessotto, Jonathan Zebina and Alessio Birindelli.

Cassano contract talks stall again with Roma

Tribal Football

Contract talks between AS Roma and Antonio Cassano have again stalled. The striker is inside the final year of his current deal and had appeared set to sign new terms ten days ago. But negotiations have again broken down after Roma rejected Cassano's request they improve on their offer of £12 million over five years.

Cassano's situation is growing more complicated by the day as Roma management may insist on coach Luciano Spalletti leaving him out of his first team while talks continue to drag on. The striker has only two games left before Italy coach Marcello Lippi names his next squad.

Le Mans confirm Juventus, Arsenal partnership

Tribal Football

French club Le Mans have confirmed an alliance with Italian giants Juventus. Juventus have been unofficially working with Le Mans since the end of last season, with the partnership confirmed by the loan of players David Chiumento and Luigi Lavecchia to the French club. Le Mans made it official yesterday, confirming an alliance with Juve, Arsenal, Sao Paulo and Valencia.

Messi content at Barca

Planet Football

Argentine star Lionel Messi says he has no intention of leaving Barcelona, but admits he is frustrated with the wrangle over his citizenship which is preventing him from playing in La Liga. Messi is viewed as one of the brightest talents to have come out of South America for some time and has the faith of Barca's paymasters to the extent that he has been handed a contract which runs until 2014.

The youngster, though, is unable to showcase his talents in La Liga, as he has yet to secure Spanish citizenship and is classed as a foreigner. Barca are working tirelessly on Messi's behalf to rectify the situation, but at present Messi is only able to play in European competition.

Messi has confirmed he is deeply frustrated by his situation, but it has not dampened his enthusiasm to shine for Barca.

"I hope the situation will be unblocked soon," Messi said at the Fifpro awards on Monday evening. "I don't know how much longer it will take. It's strange being able to play in the Champions League and not in La Liga. I'm comfortable with the contract extension and I'm really happy. In Barcelona I want to do great things."

Italian giants Internazionale and Juventus are said to be keeping tabs on Messi's situation, but there would appear to be little chance of the player making the move to Serie A. "I'm flattered by the words from Inter," he said. "And Juve are like Barcelona, the best. But I want to stay for a long time where I am. For me Barcelona are the best solution and a dream come true."

Barcelona whiz Messi: I love Juventus

Tribal Football

Barcelona whizkid Lionel Messi has opened the door to a future move to Juventus. Juve coach Fabio Capello has described the Argentine as the best young player he's seen and Messi returned the compliment after signing a new Barca deal through to 2014. "Juve and Barcelona are the best. Capello is the greatest trainer," admitted Messi.

Week 3 Spotlight: Del Piero still decisive

Football Italia

Dubbed as an "expensive luxury" on Friday, Alessandro Del Piero responded by ensuring that his beloved Juventus collected the points against Ascoli in Week 3. Making his seasonal debut for the Bianconeri, the captain scored both goals in his side’s 2-1 win against an opponent who did cause the Old Lady more problems than expected.

Having watched the win against Chievo from the bench, then the Empoli thrashing from the treatment table, Alex reminded everyone that he still has a part to play in Turin this season – even if he is now only the club’s third choice attacker behind David Trezeguet and Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

It took a little time for Pinturrichio to find his brush at the Stadio Delle Alpi on Sunday. But as the minutes passed, the Italian did start to impose himself in front of his loyal fans. Having slotted home a penalty, Del Piero then curled in a free-kick which was ironically netted just seconds after Ibrahimovic got off the bench to start his warm up.

Del Piero’s exploits will now leave boss Fabio Capello with a slight conundrum ahead of Wednesday’s trip to Udine. Can the tactician possibly drop him from the side again after such a performance? With Ibrahimovic likely to return to the line-up, Alex will be in competition with Trezeguet for that last shirt in attack.

The 31-year-old is undoubtedly no longer the great player he once was, but he is someone that has always significantly contributed to every one of the Scudetti which have arrived in Turin during his stay. He may not play as often as he would like, Roma’s Antonio Cassano may also possibly be a better fit in Turin, but Del Piero is seemingly a luxury worth keeping for now – no matter how much he costs…

Capello predicted Alex exploits

Football Italia

Juventus boss Fabio Capello insists he knew that Alex Del Piero would make the telling difference against Ascoli. The No 10 played in his first Serie A match of the season, scoring both goals in a hard fought victory.

"I was expecting him to do well," stated the tactician who hasn’t been afraid of dropping Del Piero from the line-up in the past. "Alex allowed us to win the game, but I had already said that he was looking really good in training. He has been simply extraordinary over the last few weeks. He’s not played but has conducted himself in an exemplary manner."

The Italian international has had a tough time of it in Turin since Capello’s arrival, but he concedes he has to accept the Coach’s decisions. "I have conducted myself in this manner because I am the captain of this team," explained the fan favourite. "I am always serene and if there are problems then they are only discussed within the squad itself."

Del Piero’s brace, which included his first free-kick strike for two years, allowed him to move on to 172 goals for the Bianconeri. "I’m very happy with my performance as I basically hadn’t played for a month," continued Del Piero. "It wasn’t an easy game for us at all, especially as we were not as brilliant as we usually are. But nothing changes for me. I will now start again with training and the hard work which I have always done."

Capello Congratulates Del Piero

Goal.com

Fabio Capello applauded Juventus hero Alessandro Del Piero, following the win over Ascoli clinched through a brace by the Bianconeri’s ‘Pinturicchio.’ “I had said I saw Del Piero in good shape. I have to make decisions. Sometimes I’m right, others I’m wrong, but Alex’s behaviour has been exemplary,” he said. “He’s a serious person. Tantrums bring you nowhere,” he added.

Del Piero, who Capello considers to be Juve's third forward behind Trezeguet and Ibrahimovic, was obviously very happy as well. “A difficult game, and its important we won. I am happy for how I played, and am in no way tense towards Capello. We resolve our problems through dialogue. I need to act for the good of the team, I’m the captain,” said Juve’s number 10.

Juventus coach Capello impressed by pro Del Piero

Del Piero Back On Top

Goal.com

The captain of the Bianconeri regained his first team status on Sunday and showed why he is not an unneeded luxury as Lapo Elkann had suggested earlier during the week. Alessandro Del Piero led Juventus to a 2-1 win over lowly Ascoli as Pinturicchio played his first league match of the season, scoring two decisive goals in the process.

“We’ll continue with the trainings and the work we have always done. The difference, for a team, is made by the determination in reaching the person and collective objectives." Del Piero however denied that during the week he had trained set-pieces in particular. “We did not do it more than we usually do it every week."

Juventus captain Del Piero: Lapo happy for me

Tribal Football

Juventus captain Alessandro del Piero says the happiest man after his two goals against Ascoli was Lapo Elkann. The Juve patron was quoted by the local press last week claiming Del Piero wasn't worth his wages, but was quick to get on the phone insisting he was misquoted, as the player revealed yesterday: "Lapo will for sure be very happy about my success.

"The day after that story was published, he phoned swearing to me that he never said that phrase and explained he would never say such things about me. For me, that was enough because he has always been true to his word with me."

Zebina worry for Juve

Planet Football

Juventus defender Jonathan Zebina faces a new spell on the sidelines. The Frenchman, who had only recovered from another leg injury, sustained a new problem during Sunday's clash with Ascoli. Zebina was forced off after just three minutes against Ascoli and scans have shown he has pulled his thigh.

The former Roma man is set to miss this week's clash with Udinese as a result of the injury. Zebina is set to undergo more tests on the problem later this week to find out the full extent of the problem. With Zebina missing out Manuele Blasi is expected to continue as a makeshift full back.

Juventus make new contact with Arsenal's Pires

Tribal Football

Juventus have made fresh contact with the agent of Arsenal midfielder Robert Pires. The Frenchman almost signed for Juve last summer, only for the Gunners' demand of a sizeable fee wrecking the deal. However, they're now more open to allowing Pires to move on and Italian media reports suggest his agent has informed Juve that the London club will let him go so long as he doesn't join a rival Premiership club.

Benfica ready to bid for Juventus striker Miccoli

Tribal Football

Benfica are ready to make permanent the loan deal of Juventus striker Fabrizio Miccoli. Aware of comments from Juve director general Luciano Moggi that Miccoli could return to Turin, Benfica are keen to close a deal for the Italy international. Benfica have an agreement with Juve that they can sign Miccoli permanently for £3.5 million.

Juventus 2 - 1 Ascoli

Football Italia

Alessandro Del Piero proved he's back with a brace, but Ascoli gave Juventus a battle in Turin. The Bianconeri were looking to maintain their 100 per cent record, but newly promoted Ascoli were still unbeaten after facing Milan and Lecce.

Fabio Capello had to reshuffle his defence with Lilian Thuram, Alessandro Birindelli and Gianluca Pessotto injured, while the visitors had to replace the suspended Vittorio Tosto. Alessandro Del Piero returned to the starting eleven, giving Zlatan Ibrahimovic a rest.

There was more bad news for Juve, as after less than two minutes Jonathan Zebina, who was making his comeback from injury, pulled up clutching the back of his knee. The unlucky Frenchman limped off and Manuele Blasi took on the right-back role, just as he had done in the Champions League midweek.

Surprisingly, the first real scoring opportunity fell to Ascoli after six minutes, as two players left a Cariello cross and Sasa Bjelanovic blazed over from seven yards with only Christian Abbiati to beat. Although Juve dominated possession, Ascoli were creating the best chances, as Emerson needed a late challenge to block Fini and Abbiati was called into a save on ex-Torino man Quagliarella's counter-attack.

However, the referee pointed to the spot when Pavel Nedved's cross struck Cristiano's arm just inside the area. Del Piero stepped up and rolled home a weak but effective penalty to give Juventus the lead with their first real shot on goal.

Ascoli have made a name for themselves as giant-killers and proved it again when they scored the first goal that Juventus have conceded in Serie A this season. Cariello shrugged off Patrick Vieira's challenge and saw his angled drive from the edge of the box deflected off Fabio Cannavaro to draw the visitors level.

This shook Juve out of their stasis and Cudini required a goalline clearance on Mauro German Camoranesi's looping header. It lasted just seven minutes, as Del Piero proved he is definitely back by curling in a magnificent free kick that rose and dipped past the outstretched hand of Coppola.

Del Piero's delightful first touch on Nedved's cross set up Camoranesi, only for the Argentine to balloon over the bar from a promising position.

Ibrahimovic replaced David Trezeguet at half-time, but Del Piero continued to dominate with a header that glanced wide. Ascoli weren't about to let go and Abbiati flew to block Foggia's cross-shot, while ex-Torino hero Marco Ferrante stepped back into the Stadio Delle Alpi.

Coppola did well to punch out Nedved's strike and fingertip an Ibrahimovic free kick round the post. The Czech midfielder shook the side-netting from a promising position and Ibrahimovic somehow managed to nod wide of an open goal following Coppola's error.

Juventus: Abbiati; Zebina (Blasi 3), Kovac, Cannavaro, Zambrotta; Camoranesi, Emerson, Vieira, Nedved; Del Piero, Trezeguet (Ibrahimovic 46)

Ascoli: Coppola; Comotto, Cudini, Domizzi, Del Grosso; Carriello (Foggia 52), Cristiano, Parola, Fini; Bjelanovic (Colombo 80), Quagliarella (Ferrante 52)

Post-Match Comments

Fabio Capello: “We just weren’t in the running for the opening half-hour and they put pressure on us so that we couldn’t pass the ball the way we usually do. The team did better after the break and created several scoring opportunities, but we still couldn’t put it beyond doubt. I had already said this week that Alessandro Del Piero was on form.”

Del Piero makes Juve point

Planet Football

Alessandro Del Piero showed he is far from a fading force at the weekend by scoring both goals as Juventus beat Ascoli 2-1. The talismanic Italian has been very much on the periphery this season, having been benched for the club's last two Serie A fixtures and UEFA Champions League game.

Del Piero, who captained Juve on his return to their starting line-up, has spoken of his relief at finally having been handed an opportunity to show his worth.

"It was a really difficult match for us," said Del Piero. "We weren't sparkling but it is important to win these matches. 'Personally, I'm really happy after the match, as it has been a month where I've not played and so I'm really satisfied."

Old Lady coach Fabio Capello had words of encouragement for Del Piero, who he believes still has a major role to play for the Turin outfit.

"Del Piero? In this moment he feels good," said Capello. "There will be space for everyone. Alessandro's behaviour has been exemplary. He has showed a real seriousness and today he won us the match. I look at the standings and I am happy."

Emerson delighted with new Juventus pal Vieira

Tribal Football

Juventus midfielder Emerson says his combination with Patrick Vieira is the best in the world. He said: "Playing alongside a champion like Vieira can only make me happy and, despite what some said before the season started, we do not tread on each others' toes. I stay a little further behind and Patrick is in a more advanced role. What counts is that we are beginning to understand each other and that can only help the team."

Juve are at the centre of a club vs. country row, as Fabio Capello has made it clear he is unhappy with Lilian Thuram's decision to come out of international retirement. "You cannot say no to your country, even if the clubs have their reasons for complaining," pointed out Emerson. "Playing for Brazil is not a problem for me, as I am accustomed to flying 15 hours just to wear the Seleçao jersey."

Elkann denies slamming Juventus favourite Del Piero

Tribal Football

Juventus patron Lapo Elkann has sent a letter to newspaper Il Giornale denying he made disparaging comments about Alessandro Del Piero. The heir to the Agnelli business empire was quoted as saying the captain was, "an expensive luxury we can no longer afford." But he now insists he was misquoted in the article that appeared in Friday's edition.

Blasi pens new Juventus contract

Juventus have secured midfielder Manuele Blasi to a new contract extension. The 25 year-old has extended his deal from 2008 to 2009 after putting pen to paper on Friday.

Anderlecht confirm Chelsea talks over Kompany

Tribal Football

Chelsea are chasing Anderlecht's young defender Vincent Kompany. The 19-year-old was on Chelsea's wanted list in the summer but they ended up bolstering their left-back position by signing Asier del Horno instead.

"Chelsea are interested and maybe a deal can be done," said Anderlecht managing director Herman van Holsbeeck. "I've advised Roman Abramovich to keep a special eye on him."

The Belgian international was not in Anderlecht's squad for Tuesday's opening Champions League clash at Stamford Bridge, which Chelsea won 1-0.

Capello revives Alex hopes

Football Italia

Fabio Capello has hinted at a starting spot for Alessandro Del Piero against Ascoli tomorrow afternoon in a new trident attack with Adrian Mutu.

“Juventus are in good condition,” assured the Coach after three consecutive wins between Serie A and the Champions League. Psychologically we are also doing well and want to continue along the path we have set out on this season. It’s a wonderful journey, but a difficult one, and the efforts of everyone in training have been impressive.”

Much has been said on the future of Del Piero, although patron Lapo Elkann later insisted he had not called the captain, “an expensive luxury we can no longer afford.” With reports of a move to Japan, the Premiership or even their rivals Milan, it might be time for Capello to give him another chance.

“Del Piero is in great form during training and very relaxed. I can assure you that controversy only fires him up to do better.”

During the summer the Bianconeri tested out a trident attack and could employ that system against newly promoted Ascoli, who are still unbeaten in Serie A despite facing Milan and Lecce. David Trezeguet and Zlatan Ibrahimovic may be rested in favour of Del Piero, Mutu and Marcelo Zalayeta, although the Frenchman could stay on considering his good form of late.

Some of the top stars are set to be rested, as Juventus face a difficult test on Wednesday against joint Serie A leaders Udinese. "We have four games in the next nine days, so I am thinking about rotating the squad. Our great strength is that we have so many quality players who are eager to work for the collective."

Capello must also make another difficult decision, as Gianluca Pessotto is still injured, so he can choose between Jonathan Zebina and Manuele Blasi for the right-back role. Midfielder Blasi took that position with some success in the 2-1 Champions League win over Club Brugge midweek.

Emerson enjoys Vieira rapport

Football Italia

Juve have arguably the strongest midfield partnership in the world right now and Emerson believes his rapport with Patrick Vieira can still improve.

“Compared to a year ago this team is more confident, aware of its abilities and playing better football,” said the Brazilian after earning three consecutive wins in Serie A and the Champions League. At the start of last season we were struggling more, but now we are in control and creating a lot of scoring opportunities.”

The Bianconeri aimed over 23 shots on goal against Club Brugge on Wednesday night, but still only scraped a 2-1 victory in Belgium. It was also a disappointing evening, as former Arsenal hero Vieira received a red card on his European debut with the club.

“Playing alongside a champion like Vieira can only make me happy and, despite what some said before the season started, we do not tread on each others’ toes. I stay a little further behind and Patrick is in a more advanced role. What counts is that we are beginning to understand each other and that can only help the team.”

Juve are at the centre of a club vs. country row, as Fabio Capello has made it clear he is unhappy with Lilian Thuram’s decision to come out of international retirement.

“You cannot say no to your country, even if the clubs have their reasons for complaining,” pointed out Emerson. “Playing for Brazil is not a problem for me, as I am accustomed to flying 15 hours just to wear the Seleçao jersey.”

Meanwhile, Juventus patron Lapo Elkann has sent a letter to newspaper 'Il Giornale' denying he made disparaging comments about Alessandro Del Piero. The heir to the Agnelli business empire was quoted as saying the captain was, "an expensive luxury we can no longer afford."

Serie A Preview: Juventus-Ascoli

Goal.com

After an exciting midweek Champions League tie, its back to Serie A for Juventus as they prepare to face newly promoted Ascoli. Little Ascoli will hope that Juve’s European encounter will have left them at less than 100% if they are to gain anything from this daunting tie.

BACKGROUND

Juventus come into this match after facing Club Bruges on Wednesday in their opening fixture in the group. The Turin side created a seemingly endless number of scoring chances yet amazingly only won 2-1. The result was mostly due to the expert performance of Bruges keeper Stijnen who kept the Bianconeri at bay for long periods of the game with a string of stunning saves.

Despite some poor finishing, Juventus looked impressive in Belgium, carving out a number of good scoring chances during the tie. The movement of Trezeguet was especially notable as the Frenchman scored an exquisite winning goal moving his tally to 100 goals for the club. In doing so David Trezeguet has become the 13th all-time top-scorer for the Bianconeri as he reached his scoring milestone, just four goals behind another French Juventus legend: Michel Platini. With the partnership of Ibrahimovic and Trezeguet looking so potent, few would bet against the Bianconeri breaching Ascoli’s defence on Sunday.

Ascoli found their inclusion in Serie A as something of a surprise after the scandals that rocked Italian football in the summer. With little time to prepare their squad, Ascoli’s roster remains much the same as the side that failed to clench promotion via their league position last term.

No real purchases were made as the club’s inclusion in Serie A was only confirmed on August the 16th. Ascoli have a good blend of youth and experience and it is the like of Marco Ferrante that will be vital in their bid to survival this season.

TEAM NEWS

Juventus
Much to Capello’s annoyance, Thuram is injured following his decision to return to international football with France. Robert Kovac steps in to fill the void and will be joined by Balzaretti who missed the midweek game after the birth of his daughter.

Ascoli
The side that faced Milan should me more or less unchanged as the manager plots an unlikely away win at the Stadio Delle Alpi.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Juventus
Trezeguet looked to be at his majestic best on Wednesday and will be a handful in this vein of form. The Frenchman is lethal in the air and on the ground with an eye fo goal that is almost unparalleled in World football.

Ascoli
With such a young squad full of new players the veteran’s guile and experience will be needed to withstand the pressure from a formidable Juventus outfit. Ferrante’s physical presence could be a problem for Juventus if they don’t keep their concentration.

PROBABLE STARTING XIs

Juventus (4-4-2):
Abiatti - Balzaretti, Kovac, F.Cannavaro, Zambrotta - Camoranesi, Vieira, Emerson, Nedved - Trezeguet, Ibrahimovic

Ascoli (4-4-2):
Coppola; Cudini, Del Grosso, Domizzi, Carbone; Foggia, Parola, Cristiano, Fini; Quagliarella, Ferrante

PREDICTION

Juventus should easily cope with Ascoli at the at home and an upset in unlikely. If Juventus’ finishing improves from Wednesday’s CL clash, the score could mirror their last game against Empoli which ended 4-0 to the Bianconeri.

Juve: We can't afford Del Piero

Football Italia

Juventus patron Lapo Elkann has again publicly humiliated Alessandro Del Piero, dubbing the captain “an expensive luxury for the team.” Elkann, the heir to the Agnelli throne, has already run up column inches in the Italian Press with his comments on Del Piero and Bianconeri target Antonio Cassano, but this latest tirade is possibly his worst yet.

“Del Piero costs too much for what he brings to the table,” Elkann was quoted as saying in ‘Il Giornale’. “He is a luxury that we cannot afford any longer.”

The Italian international earns approximately £3m per season and his contract expires in 2008, but the fact that Fabio Capello has left him on the bench for most of his time in charge suggests that he’ll be parting company with the club sooner rather than later.

Elkann is not the only FIAT owner to make such statements, as last week Luca Cordero di Montezemolo pointed out, “I’d prefer Cassano to Del Piero as a testimonial for the new Punto, as he is more likeable.”

This will only add to reports that Del Piero will leave Juve as early as January, with offers from Japan, Arsenal, Manchester City or even Milan. Emerson has rushed to the defence of his teammate in today’s Press Conference. “I saw Del Piero training well and he has recovered from his injury. He’s important to all of us.”

Meanwhile, there has been a vote of confidence for Manuele Blasi, who has extended his Juve contract by one year. The midfielder, who played as a right-back in the Champions League this week, is tied to the club until June 30 2009.

Emerson Runs To DP's Defense

Goal.com

Brazilian midfielder Emerson defended Alessandro Del Piero in the wake of the statement made by Agnelli heir Lapo Elkann to Italian paper ‘Il Giornale’. “Del Piero costs too much for what he gives to the team. It’s a luxury item we can’t afford,” were Elkan’s harsh words.

But Emerson came to his teammates aid this afternoon like a true leader. “Del Piero isn’t a luxury item. He’s very important for us, and is in excellent shape now, he said. The Bianconeri’s fallen hero has seen very little playing time since the start of this season, and could be sold when the January transfer window opens up.

Blasi bags new deal

Planet Football

Juventus have handed Manuele Blasi a 12-month contract extension. The Italy international has impressed Juve coach Fabio Capello since joining the Old Lady last summer. He was tied to Stadio Delle Alpi until 2008 but Blasi has now signed a deal to stay in Turin until 2009.

The former Perugia and Parma midfielder has enjoyed a fine start to the new campaign as he learns an unfamiliar position. Blasi played as a defender during Juve's victory over Club Brugge in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday night. Capello was buoyed by the 25-year-old's display and is now weighing up whether to deploy Blasi at the back on a more regular basis.

Thuram To Miss Ascoli Match

Goal.com

The French defender is still recovering from the injury picked up during international duty. Lilian Thuram will almost certainly not be part of the Juve squad which will host Ascoli at the Delle Alpi of Turin. The player is gradually reaching the best condition, but Fabio Capello is expected to rest him so to be at 100% for the following Serie A encounter against Udinese.

With Jonathan Zebina back from injury as well, the Juve tactician is still pondering on who to play as right-back following Blasi’s excellent display against Club Brugge in the Champions League.
