Juventus snubbed Cassano offer
Football Italia
Juventus chief operating officer Antonio Giraudo has revealed that his club rejected the chance to sign Roma’s Antonio Cassano this summer. The Italian starlet was expected to join the Bianconeri as his current contract expires in June 2006. But the player remained in the capital, even if Giraudo has told the Corriere dello Sport newspaper that they could have netted him.
"We approached Roma about Amantino Mancini, however they told us he was untransferable," Giraudo stated. "Roma offered us Cassano instead, but we already had five attackers and just couldn’t allow his arrival."
One man who the club did successfully poach from Roma was boss Fabio Capello in the summer of 2004. The tactician instantly delivered the title even if Giraudo has conceded that their swoop for the tactician was not planned.
"We were thinking about Didier Deschamps and a few young Italian Coaches (Cesare Prandelli)," explained the official. "We were then told that Fabio wanted to leave Roma and that he would be pleased to join us here. I immediately informed Umberto Agnelli and he told me to not waste any time in signing him. It has proved to be a good decision."
Abbiati ignores Milan history
Football Italia
Juventus ‘keeper Christian Abbiati says his Milan past will have no effect on him during Sunday’s match against Inter. Some are labelling the Scudetto showdown as a Milanese derby for the shot-stopper, seeing as he is currently on loan from the Rossoneri. But the Italian insists he is going into the game with the intention of winning for Juventus – not for the club who still own him.
"I wouldn’t talk about it being a derby," the No 1 told Datasport on Thursday. "The games against Inter are part of the past now. I can’t even remember them anymore. I must just think about Juventus from this moment because I now feel like a Bianconeri player at all costs.
"I am happy at this club and we can and must do well against the Nerazzurri at the weekend."
Abbiati was netted this summer after Italian first-choice Gigi Buffon was ruled out until November with a shoulder problem. The custodian has had a shaky start to his new adventure but seems to be slowly winning over the fans. He received cheers of encouragement on Tuesday night and responded with two fine saves to deny Rapid Vienna in the 3-0 win.
"I understand the supporters because it can’t be easy for a player to join and be accepted after spending so much time at a club like Milan," he added. Abbiati opted for a Turin transfer after spending the last two seasons as a reserve behind Nelson Dida.
Del Piero clears the air with Juventus pal Ibrahimovic
Tribal Football
Juventus captain Alessandro del Piero and striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic held clear-the-air talks yesterday after a bust-up during the Champions League clash with Rapid Vienna. Ibrahimovic's play on the night drew angry criticism from coach Fabio Capello, who branded the Swede as "egotistical". Del Piero was also unimpressed and let Ibrahimovic know his feelings in the dressing room after the game.
However, yesterday the pair spoke and agreed to put the row behind them. Del Piero was impressed by Ibrahimovic's public acknowledgement of his mistakes on Wednesday afternoon.
France call up Juve quartet
Football Italia
France boss Raymond Domenech has selected four Juventus players for the World Cup qualifiers with Switzerland and Cyprus. David Trezeguet, Patrick Vieira, Lilian Thuram and Jonathan Zebina, despite his recent injury problems, have been called up.
Former Juve hero Zinedine Zidane is also included after he recovered from a groin strain he picked up in the 1-0 win in Ireland this month. The Real Madrid player hopes to be fully fit in time for the crucial qualifier against the Swiss in Berne on October 8.
Currently joint top of Group 4 with Switzerland, the French finish their campaign against Cyprus at the Stade de France on October 12. Star striker Thierry Henry, another former Old Lady player, is still out with a groin injury though.
Goalkeepers: Grégory Coupet (Lyon), Mickaël Landreau (Nantes).

Juventus - Inter
Football Italia
The Derby d’Italia clash between Juventus and Inter is one of the most eagerly awaited dates on the Serie A calendar. These often heated encounters have been even more so in recent years after Juve snatched the League title away from Inter on the last day of the 2001-02 season, and this year is set to be no different. With the pair currently making up the top two in the Serie A table, this encounter could have a significant affect on the eventual destination of the Scudetto - even at this early stage of the campaign.
The two sides have already met once this season in the Italian Super Cup, when Inter came out winners after some suspect refereeing decisions. Nerazzurri defender Walter Samuel will be particularly keen to play well having only recently returned from the lengthy ban he received after being judged to have spat at Pavel Nedved during that match.
Samuel is not the only player out to prove a point in this game though. Inter’s Luis Figo had previously signed for the Bianconeri only for the transfer to be made void after it was revealed he had also signed an agreement with Parma. He subsequently joined Barcelona instead.
In the Juve camp, Fabio Cannavaro will definitely want to show the San Siro outfit what they lost when they let him move to Turin, and with Christian Abbiati still contracted to Milan, the ‘keeper will be keen to strike a blow for the red half of the city.
Inter will have a hard task as they will have to break a run of form that has seen Juve win all five of their games so far this season. While they will be encouraged by the fact that they themselves have now won three games in a row, the Nerazzurri will have to contend with the return from injury of Lilian Thuram. While the Turin side still have the likes of Gianluigi Buffon and Jonathan Zebina unavailable, Inter themselves have Sinisa Mihajlovic, Javier Zanetti and Cristiano Zanetti all out.
Juventus (probable): Abbiati; Blasi, Thuram, F Cannavaro, Zambrotta; Camoranesi, Emerson, Vieira, Nedved; Trezeguet, Ibrahimovic
Inter (probable): Julio Cesar; Cordoba, Materazzi, Samuel, Favalli; Figo, Cambiasso, Veron, Stankovic; Adriano, Martins

Moggi: Derby won’t decide title
Football Italia
Juventus director general Luciano Moggi has dismissed talk that the game against Inter could prove decisive in the Scudetto race. The two teams, separated by three points in the table, meet in Turin on Sunday night when the Derby d’Italia kicks off.
But although the leaders could in theory move six points clear of the Nerazzurri, Moggi is playing down the game’s importance. "The result won’t make a real difference to the championship, even if it will be important for the image of the side who wins," he told RAI television programme Uno Mattino. "I don’t expect it to be a great game to watch, but it will certainly be a very physical match to be involved in."
The Old Lady have won all seven of their games so far this term, five in Serie A and two in Europe, but Moggi concedes Inter are a tough side to breakdown. "I am sure of our strength," he added. "However, I have often praised Inter even if it hasn’t always been well received. I am convinced that Inter are a complete side, more than they have ever been over recent years.
"Inter once had individuals who did some great things, now they have a well defined playing manner as a team. You can see the work of the Coach, but you have to say that the sacrifices of President Massimo Moratti to strengthen the side have been decisive too."
Juventus star Ibrahimovic accepts Capello "egotistical" rap
Tribal Football
Juventus coach Fabio Capello admits he was upset with the approach of striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic after Tuesday night's 3-0 win over Rapid Vienna. "Ibrahimovic made two mistakes and we will discuss it later, as he was too egotistical," rapped Capello.
The Swede has often been accused of hogging the ball and he twice refused to pass the ball to a team-mate in a better scoring position. "I really didn't appreciate when we went on the counter-attack with three against two and Alessandro Del Piero unmarked, but instead of passing it he tried to hold on and eventually lost the ball."
Yesterday, Ibra accepted Capello's criticism: "Capello explained to me I had to be less egotistical. I accept that. I was happy with my goal, but the important thing is that the team won."
Trez supports goal-hungry Ibra
Football Italia
David Trezeguet has defended Juventus teammate Zlatan Ibrahimovic from jibes that he was too egoistic in the 3-0 win over Rapid Vienna. Boss Fabio Capello was annoyed by the Swede’s selfish play at times last night, as he looked for his first Champions League goal since his arrival in 2004.
But Trezeguet insists that goal droughts are problematic periods for a forward to continue playing in. "If a striker doesn’t score then he has just one thought in his head and that is that he wants to find a goal," the Frenchman stated. "He therefore sees things a little differently."
The former Monaco striker netted his 101st goal for the club on Tuesday, before being joined on the score sheet by Adrian Mutu and then Ibrahimovic.
"We didn’t play that great at the start of the game as we were a little tired from the Parma trip," added Trezeguet. "But Mutu and Zlatan managed to get their first goals in Europe for us and this is very important for the rest of the season."
Juventus, who have a 100 per cent record in all competitions, are now focusing on the big Serie A clash against second placed Inter on Sunday. "They are a team who are doing very well," noted Trezeguet. "They are the most in-form side along with us. Inter also have some very good players in their team. Let us hope that it is a good game."
Del Piero hits his century
Football Italia
Alessandro Del Piero says he is honoured to have played in his 100th European game for Juventus last night. The club captain came on as a second half substitute against Rapid Vienna on Tuesday to celebrate his century for the Bianconeri.
"I’m proud to have become the first Juventus player in history to reach 100 in European competition," he told his official website. "This is obviously a great honour, something of great satisfaction and a number which signifies a lot for me."
The Old Lady collected a 3-0 victory at the Delle Alpi thanks to goals from David Trezeguet, Adrian Mutu and Zlatan Ibrahimovic. "It was our third game in six days and we were a little tired," added the 1993 signing from Padova. "We increased our tempo in the second period and the two late goals ensured us the three points.
"It was an excellent result seeing as it was our seventh from seven games since the start of the season in Serie A and the Champions League."
Moratti offers Juventus chief Moggi free reign at Inter Milan
Tribal Football
While he insists he's staying at Juventus beyond the end of this season, Luciano Moggi is being linked with a shock move away this week. Director general Moggi's contract at Juve expires this summer and AS Roma have emerged as a possible destination next season.
However, Inter Milan patron Massimo Moratti has also been in touch and is prepared to hand over the club's entire technical division for Moggi to run. The Juve chief was also in talks with AC Milan supremo Silvio Berlusconi, who made it clear earlier this month that he wants to sign him.
Moggi insists: I'm staying with Juventus
Tribal Football
Juventus director general Luciano Moggi says he will remain with the club beyond when his current contract expires in 2006. "I stay, I stay with Juventus - and my contract is not going to expire: it is set to an indeterminate time," said Moggi, who has been linked with AC Milan. "It's not nice to speak of this now in respect to the shareholders. But I will stay with Juve."
On his meeting with Milan patron Silvio Berlusconi earlier this month, Moggi explained: "I was there as a courtesy to thank him for loaning us Christian Abbiati."

Juventus 3 - 0 Rapid Vienna
Football Italia
Adrian Mutu scored his first goal in a Juve jersey and Zlatan Ibrahimovic broke his drought in a 3-0 victory over Rapid Vienna.
The Bianconeri have a 100 per cent record in Serie A after five games and were hoping to maintain that form in Europe. Patrick Vieira was suspended following his red card in the 2-1 win away to Club Brugge, so Giuliano Giannichedda made a rare start in the Bianconeri jersey. Gianluca Pessotto returned to the side and Alessandro Del Piero was left on the bench in favour of David Trezeguet and Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
As expected, Juve had an aggressive start and went close with two Ibrahimovic efforts, one a snapshot just wide and the other smothered by the goalkeeper. After 10 minutes Emerson's strike shaved the crossbar and Trezeguet nodded Pessotto's cross off target, while Akaguenduez had a promising opportunity for Rapid Vienna.
Mauro Camoranesi scored a great goal at the weekend against Parma and almost netted here as well, but his angled drive fizzed inches wide of the upright.
The pressure finally paid off after 27 minutes. Ibrahimovic started the move and Gianluca Zambrotta's cross was sidefooted home from close range by Trezeguet for his second goal in as many Champions League ties this season.
Pavel Nedved's cross rolled along the face of goal, but Camoranesi was just unable to get the final touch. After the break, Camoranesi held up the ball for a Trezeguet volley that was charged down by Rapid Vienna defenders.
The Austrians had their first real scoring opportunity just before the hour mark, as Christian Abbiati took two touches to get substitute Lawaree's attempt under control. The new arrival was causing Juve a few problems and fired just over the bar.
Del Piero replaced Trezeguet for the final half-hour and Emerson fired over from a promising position after a chaotic move inside the area.
Rapid were fighting back in the second half and Lawaree went close, getting on the end of Hlinka's cross and slicing wide of the target with only Abbiati to beat. The move had been started by Lilian Thuram's error and Juve were increasingly under pressure.
An Ibrahimovic counter-attack was squandered by Nedved blazing over the crossbar, but the Swede should've passed it to Del Piero earlier, as he was in a much better scoring position.
Ibrahimovic is yet to score for Juventus this season and he showed why moments later. Del Piero rolled across for the ex-Ajax man and he incredibly fired straight at the goalkeeper.
Del Piero proved he is far from a has-been with a spectacular volley on 80 minutes. It was similar to the goal he famously scored against Fiorentina in his youth, Nedved chipping up a perfect cross, but Payer performed an equally stunning save to deny him.
Moments later, Abbiati was at full stretch to tip an Ivanschitz strike off target, as Juve's situation was certainly not secure. Substitute Adrian Mutu put the final scares behind them, his angled drive getting a touch off the 'keeper, but not enough to prevent him scoring his first goal for Juventus.
Ibrahimovic made up for his earlier errors with a third for the Bianconeri - breaking his goal drought. The Swede volleyed a Nedved cross into the ground and it bounced back over the helpless Payer. Not only was it Ibrahimovic's first of the season, it was the only goal he has ever scored for Juventus in the Champions League.
Juventus: Abbiati; Pessotto, Thuram, Cannavaro, Zambrotta; Camoranesi (Mutu 65), Giannichedda (Blasi 83), Emerson, Nedved; Ibrahimovic, Trezeguet (Del Piero 60)
Rapid Vienna: Payer; Dober (Martinez 76), Valachovic, Bejbl, Adamski; Hofmann, Korsos, Hlinka, Ivanschitz; Kincl, Akaguenduez (Lawaree 52)

Capello ticks off 'selfish' Ibra
Football Italia
Fabio Capello has given Zlatan Ibrahimovic a clip round the ear for his “egotistical” behaviour in the win over Rapid Vienna.
“We could’ve closed this game in the first half, but were too complacent and this isn’t the way we wanted to play,” said the Coach after the 3-0 victory. “It was tense until Adrian Mutu’s goal and we were thankful for Christian Abbiati’s saves.”
David Trezeguet’s early goal gave them a slender lead until Mutu and Ibrahimovic netted late strikes to ease the pressure.
“We created the scoring opportunities, but couldn’t convert them, and in football when you give your opponents a look in it’ll cost you,” added Capello. “Ibrahimovic made two mistakes tonight and we will discuss it later, as he was too egotistical.”
The Swede has often been accused of hogging the ball and he twice refused to pass the ball to a team-mate in a better scoring position. “I really didn’t appreciate when we went on the counter-attack with three against two and Alessandro Del Piero unmarked, but instead of passing it he tried to hold on and eventually lost the ball.”
With Mutu and Ibrahimovic also breaking their ducks tonight, Capello has a tough choice to make for Sunday’s top of the Serie A table showdown with Inter.
“I am happy to have this ‘problem’ of having to choose between a wealth of talent at my disposal. Every game is an individual moment in time and a team can play like giants or minnows. Playing every three days is tough, but getting this victory today was positive and gives us the confidence to prepare for the next test.”
Mutu scored his debut goal in a Bianconeri jersey and, above all, his first since failing a drugs test and seeing his contract terminated by Chelsea.
“The negative period of my career has been closed for a long time in my eyes, but this goal is very important for my confidence and came at a crucial moment of the game,” said the Romanian. “I don’t mind playing a bit wide, as if the Coach prefers me to take that role then I’ll put my qualities to the service of the team.”
CL Preview: Juventus-Rapid Vienna (Group A)
Goal.com
The Old Lady tries to virtually book the ticket for the next round of the Champions League as they host the Austrian champions on Tuesday night.
BACKGROUND
Six wins out of six games played (5 in Serie A, 1 in CL). This is Juve’s record so far this season as Fabio Capello’s side intends on making it 7 out of 7 when at the Delle Alpi of Turin the Bianconeri will entertain Rapid Vienna on Tuesday evening.
Impressive and unstoppable are two adjectives that have been used to describe Juventus in this early part of the season following some excellent performances with little or no glitches at all.
A win against Rapid would almost certainly guarantee a place in the last 16 for the Turin-based club, therefore Capello is expected to field the best team out there to achieve an early qualification and be able to focus more on Serie A before the knockout stage starts.
In the first match of the group, Juventus managed to beat Club Brugge 2-1 away from him, whereas Rapid Vienna lost 1-0 at home against Bayern Munich. The last time both teams met was in 1997 when the Bianconeri won easily 5-0 at home and eventually reached the final which, however, they lost against Borussia Dortmund.
Capello is expected to leave Alessandro Del Piero on the bench in favour of Ibrahimovic and Trezeguet, while Giannichedda and Kovac will replace respectively Vieira (suspended) and Thuram (injured).
PROBABLE FORMATIONS
Juventus (4-4-2):
Abbiati - Pessotto, Kovac, Cannavaro, Zambrotta - Camoranesi, Emerson, Giannichedda,
Nedved - Trezeguet, Ibrahimovic
Rapid (4-4-2):
Payer - Dober, Valachovic, Bejb, Labant - Hofmann, Korsos, Hlinka, Ivanschitz
- Kincl, Akagunduz
PREDICTION
So far Juventus have been an unstoppable winning machine and there is no reason why the mechanism should come to a stop against the Austrian team. A comfortable win for the Old Lady.

Juventus chief Moggi admits Inter Milan threat
Tribal Football
Juventus director general Luciano Moggi admits they see Inter Milan as a genuine title threat. "The Nerazzurri, as a team, is now making an impression," admitted Moggi. "Before, they were a group of individuals that struggled to play together. But now they are a team with many individualities. Mancini's influence has been positive."
Del Piero: I’m no substitute
Football Italia
Alex Del Piero insists he is no reserve player at Juventus despite his limited use so far this season. The forward has only appeared in two of the club’s six official games and could again be ignored for tonight’s clash against Rapid Vienna. But the Italian, who is the club captain, maintains that he's still a key figure at the Stadio Delle Alpi.
"I don’t feel like a reserve," he said. "I’m still aiming to play from the start against Rapid, as well as against Inter on Sunday. I train during the week as if I already know that I will be selected for games," added the No 10.
Del Piero scored twice in the Week 3 win over Ascoli, as well as setting up Patrick Vieira’s winner at Udinese. Yet he was again dropped for the trip to Parma on Sunday and Capello is expected to field a strike force of Zlatan Ibrahimovic and David Trezeguet on Tuesday. However, if Capello does given Alex a chance then the international will make his 100th appearance in the Champions League this evening.
"I’m not interested in numbers, the important thing for me is to play," continued the former Padova youngster. "After all, Rapid bring me luck seeing as I already scored past them 10 years ago. Tonight’s game is important and I’m ready for anything."
Juventus (probable): Abbiati; Blasi, Thuram, Cannavaro, Zambrotta; Camoranesi, Emerson, Giannichedda, Nedved; Trezeguet, Ibrahimovic.
Del Piero Hopes To Play
Goal.com
The last time the Juve captain played against Rapid Vienna, he scored to help the Bianconeri defeat the Austrian champions 5-0.
The last meeting between Juventus and Rapid Vienna occurred in 1997, in the group stage of the Champions League. Eight years later both teams are set to clash again at the Delle Alpi of Turin, with Alessandro Del Piero hoping to be in the first eleven and maybe even score.
“I wish that history repeats itself and I naturally hope to play and do well. The record is an objective which fascinates me and I hope to reach it as soon as possible, so then I can set other targets," declared Pinturicchio.

Capello to select best XI
Football Italia
Juventus boss Fabio Capello has shelved his rotation system for the Champions League tie against Rapid Vienna on Tuesday. The tactician rested numerous men in the 2-1 win at Parma this weekend, but he has today confirmed he will recall his key players for the Stadio Delle Alpi clash.
"I have yet to decide on my team, but I will pick the strongest side possible," Capello stated. "That’s because the Champions League is our principal objective. Rapid are a side to be faced with humility and the three points are very important for us right now. We are up against a very able side who are a threat on the counter attack with two very fast forwards. We want the points though."
One man who Juve won’t be able to count on is the suspended Patrick Vieira, who was sent off in the 2-1 win at Club Brugge. "Vieira won’t play but we can’t rely on just one man, even if we are talking about a great player," added Capello. "We have a big squad this term and we can make the odd change without too many problems."
Capello also dismissed claims that his side may not be totally focused on their European Cup tie as they await the visit of Inter in Week 6. "We are very focused," he underlined. "Juventus’ great strength is the ability to think about one objective at a time."
The Old Lady have made a solid start to the campaign after winning all six of their games so far this term. However, goalkeeper Christian Abbiati has been pinpointed as a possible weak point after some shaky displays. "I don’t agree," defended Capello. "He may have made a few mistakes, but he is a player with great personality and one who offers security to his defence."
Juventus tracking Brazilian wonderkid Kerlon
Tribal Football
Juventus director general Luciano Moggi is keeping tabs on Brazilian sensation Kerlon. The 17 year-old midfielder came to prominence last season when he produced his 'head dribble' in action for the U17 national team. Kerlon shares the same agent as Juve defender Gladstone and Moggi has asked to be kept informed of the youngster's situation. The midfielder is contracted to Cruziero until 2010 and has already received a mega bucks offer from Saudi Arabia to play in the Middle East.

English interest for Capello
Planet Football
Juventus boss Fabio Capello has revealed he may consider managing in England in the future. The former Milan, Real Madrid and Roma boss still has two years left on his contract with the Italian champions, with the Bianconeri one of the favourites to win the UEFA Champions League title this season.
The 59-year-old has been previously linked with a move to The Premiership and the former Italy international admits he is considering the idea of managing in English football after his time with The Old Lady.
"My future after Juventus? I don't know," Capello said. "I've been thinking about coaching in England, but I still haven't decided anything yet. I still have two years to go on my contract with Juventus, and I want to attain the objectives that the directors and myself discussed when I signed."
Capello snaps at Juventus chief Moggi
Tribal Football
Juventus coach Fabio Capello has snapped at director general Luciano Moggi's comments over Alessandro Del Piero. After Saturday's win over Parma, Moggi said: "Del Piero's okay. He will be very useful for us on Tuesday in the Champions League."
Capello hasn't confirmed that Del Piero will play on Tuesday and snapped last night: "I did not know that Moggi made the formation. Up to now I have always made it. And I will continue to make it. However, Del Piero will be very valuable to Juve."
Moggi: Sanz inspired Parma against Juventus
Tribal Football
Juventus director general Luciano Moggi says new president Lorenzo Sanz inspired Parma to run his team close on Saturday night. "Parma have played with the inspiration that only a new president's arrival can bring," said Moggi. "Credit to Parma, but also credit to Juve which did enough to win. Capello made the necessary changes at halftime. He brought the important players on and they made the difference."
Juventus chief Moggi ponders Arsenal striker Henry
Tribal Football
Juventus director general Luciano Moggi has hinted they're looking at a striker for the January market. Former Juve striker Thierry Henry has been linked with a return to Turin and Moggi said: "On his arrival to Juventus, Vieira's friendship with Thuram played an important part. As for Henry, he is a good friend of Vieira's. But there is a difficultly with players that leave Juve then return."
Mutu delighted with first Juventus start
Tribal Football
Juventus attacker Adrian Mutu was delighted with his first start in Saturday's win over Parma. "It is always a pleasure to play here," said the ex-Parma and Chelsea man. "I am happy because we won, but also as I saw a strong Parma side that fought until the bitter end. This'll be a tough place for anyone this season."
Emerson no great fan of Juventus rotation
Tribal Football
Juventus midfielder Emerson admits he's no great fan of coach Fabio Capello's rotation policy. "During the close-season the coach informed us that this year there would be space for all," said the Brazilian. "The games are many and it's right to rotate the players with such a big campaign in front of us. I am unaccustomed to being on the bench, but the most important thing is to win and pocket the three points."
Sunday 25 September
Parma 1 - 2 Juventus
Football Italia
Juve fought back at the Stadio Tardini with Mauro Camoranesi and Patrick Vieira to make it five wins out of five.
This used to be one of the biggest battles in Serie A, but Parma's financial difficulties have left them challenging for rather different objectives. New owner Lorenzo Sanz was in the stands to watch the Gialloblu, while Juventus aimed to maintain their 100 per cent record.
Former Parma heroes Lilian Thuram, Fabio Cannavaro and Adrian Mutu stepped into the Stadio Tardini, while Emerson, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Alessandro Del Piero were rested. Daniele Bonera and Domenico Morfeo recovered from their fitness worries to start, while Fabio Cannavaro's little brother Paolo was left on the bench.
The first real scoring opportunity came after seven minutes, as both David Trezeguet and Mauro German Camoranesi were prevented from scoring by brave defensive interventions.
However, it was Parma who took a surprise lead at the 13th. Bernardo Corradi held up the ball for Marco Delvecchio's low volley from a tight angle that beat Christian Abbiati. It was Delvecchio's first goal for the Gialloblu and an important confidence booster for the veteran striker.
Camoranesi's looping header was just over, then Abbiati performed a brilliant one-handed save on Corradi, but the move had already been halted for a foul.
Juventus were unable to create any real chances and goalkeeper Cristiano Lupatelli was left relatively untroubled in the first half. If anything, Parma could've doubled their lead, as Abbiati palmed out a powerful Fabio Simplicio strike.
The Bianconeri are not to be outdone and eventually equalised with a goal out of nowhere, but one that Camoranesi will treasure as perhaps the best of his career. The Argentine gathered the ball from Patrick Vieira and unleashed a rocket from 20 metres that slotted into the top corner of the net.
Nonetheless, it was a poor overall performance and Fabio Capello introduced Emerson for Giuliano Giannichedda. It wasn't a good start to the second half, as Abbiati completely missed a Delvecchio cross and was fortunate that Mark Bresciano fired straight at the goalkeeper.
Fernando Couto replaced the injured Giuseppe Cardone for Parma. Juve went close to taking the lead soon after, as Zalayeta's taut cross-shot was inches away from both the far post and Trezeguet's outstretched foot.
Delvecchio also limped off with a knee problem, making way for youngster Andrea Pisanu. Abbiati still didn't look secure and performed a bizarre punching save on a Fabio Simplicio cross he probably could have caught.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic replaced the disappointing Zalayeta and moments later Juve had a great chance to score. Camoranesi intercepted a weak pass and Trezeguet saw his shot palmed round the post by Lupatelli.
Parma gradually fought back and Pisanu drilled inches wide of the near post. During the same move, Corradi fell in the area under pressure from Fabio Cannavaro and the two men argued over whether it was a push or a dive.
Ibrahimovic is yet to score in Serie A this season and made some elemental errors that earned the scorn of the Stadio Tardini crowd.
Trezeguet wasted another good chance on 74 minutes, as Pavel Nedved's shot was deflected into his path and Contini managed to charge down the Frenchman's follow-up.
Bresciano also suffered an injury, so Parma introduced Paolo Cannavaro to face his older brother.
The Bianconeri now had the upper hand and should've made it 2-1 with 10 minutes to go, but Camoranesi's looping header on a Gianluca Zambrotta cross shaved the far post with Lupatelli beaten.
Juve grabbed the goal moments later, as Patrick Vieira started and ended the move. The ex-Arsenal star gave Ibrahimovic the ball and ran to the far post to nod in his chipped cross. It was Vieira's third goal in five Serie A games.
Ibrahimovic's confidence was boosted by that assist and his fierce drive was well smothered by the goalkeeper.
Parma: Lupatelli; Bonera, Cardone (Couto 47), Contini, Pasquale; Bresciano (P Cannavaro 76), Grella, Simplicio, Delvecchio (Pisanu 59); Morfeo; Corradi
Juventus: Abbiati; Pessotto, Thuram, F Cannavaro, Zambrotta; Camoranesi, Vieira, Giannichedda (Emerson 46), Mutu (Nedved 69); Trezeguet, Zalayeta (Ibrahimovic 56)

Capello praises Juve subs
Football Italia
Fabio Capello insists the sluggish performance at Parma won’t discourage him from squad rotation, although admitting the substitutions made the difference.
The Gialloblu dominated the opening 45 minutes of the Stadio Tardini clash last night, though Juventus came out the eventual 2-1 winners.
“Mario Beretta’s side kept up an incredible tempo throughout the first half and I told my players during the break that they couldn’t possibly keep that up,” explained Capello.
“The substitutions helped us a great deal, both in terms of fresh legs and the quality of those who stepped on to the field. In any case, we need to rotate the squad at the moment so that everyone gets to play and rest.”
The introduction of Zlatan Ibrahimovic – who set up Patrick Vieira’s winner – and Emerson gave the Bianconeri an extra dimension they had been lacking up until then.
“We were too slow in our build-up and during half-time I asked my players to increase the tempo and find more depth. We must also note that Parma put in a great performance.”
Mauro German Camoranesi equalised for Juve with their first real scoring opportunity on the stroke of half-time, firing in a fierce strike from the edge of the box.
“I had to hit the ball with my toes as the defender was closing me down and I had only a split second to get my shot in,” explained the Italian international. “Our tempo was too slow in the first half and this allowed Parma to win back the ball and launch a counter-attack. In the second period we proved that the win was deserved and should’ve sealed up the points earlier.”
Adrian Mutu made his first start in a Juventus jersey and did so in front of his old fans at the Stadio Tardini. “It is always a pleasure to play here,” said the ex-Parma and Chelsea man. “I am happy because we won, but also as I saw a strong Parma side that fought until the bitter end. This’ll be a tough place for anyone this season.”

Serie A Preview: Parma-Juventus
Goal.com
Serie A just rolls along this week as Parma and Juve square off in what could be an enticing encounter or just another day at the office.
Background
Parma got humbled against Roma on Wednesday. Roma solved their conversion problems and with their dominant field possession and open play opened a vulnerable Parma defence and a goal feast ensued. It seems that the inconsistencies continue and it could very well be another relegation year. Sanz the new owner of Parma has to react quickly to this situation or the knives will start to come out as the tifosi want results. Parma faces a difficult task to stop the juggernaut: Juve. Juve want to win as they do not want to give up points and the more points the celebrations could start sooner rather than later.
Juventus had a typical day at the office. All went smoothly and the beat Udinese 1-0 to stay top of Serie A. However, Fiorentina and Palermo are sharpening their steak knives to prepare to slash the points off of the old lady. Could something smell rotten in Denmark as Hamlet said and could Parma aid their cause; we shall see. Best bets are that Juve will come full swing and Juve are too sharpening their steak knives to cut to vulnerable Parma defence. Beretta has little time to find a solution and if you do not have one vs. Capello, then Juve will have another day at the office.
Team news
No suspensions and the same players are injured for both teams.
Players to watch
Lupatelli (Parma)
Can he recover from conceding 4 goals? If not Trezegol and Ibra could have
a field day and add to their score sheet.
Ibrahimovic (Juventus)
Will start as Del Piero is benched. Capello is testing both of then to see
their utility and if he wants to be the man, he must score and perform well.
The next Van Basten? People say it, but he still has a lot or work to do
to create his own name in the soccer world.
Probable Formations
Parma (4-4-2):
Lupatelli – Cannavaro, Cardone, Contini, Pasquale – Pisanu,
Bolano, Simplicio, Bresciano – Morfeo, Corradi
Juventus (4-4-2):
Abbiati – Blasi, Thuram, F. Cannavaro, Zambrotta – Camoranesi,
Giannichedda, Vieira, Mutu – Trezeguet, Ibrahimovic
Probable outcome
Expect Juve to come out full throttle to get the points. A loss would reflect badly on the team and deprive them of valuable points. Parma is a tough team at home, but Juve on their day can beat anyone. Expect a typical 1-0 win for the black and white (or red, yellow, blue or whatever they are now wearing).

Capello faces defensive crisis
Football Italia
Fabio Capello concedes that injuries have left him with a defensive conundrum, but Adrian Mutu is set to be unleashed against his former Parma teammates tomorrow.
“We are fine in attack and in midfield, but our problems could arise at the back,” explained the Coach. “Lilian Thuram and Robert Kovac are still recovering, Jonathan Zebina is out, while Alessandro Birindelli is a long-term absentee. I’ll have to work out who can play.”
Gianluca Pessotto has returned to the fray following his setback, but despite the crisis Juve maintain the joint strongest defensive record in Serie A, as Livorno and the Bianconeri have only conceded one in four games. “With so many fixtures on at the moment, a Coach must rotate the squad, especially if we consider many of our players are also internationals. Thankfully, it’s good to have a choice and I hope it’ll always be like that.”
One of the benchwarmers who could be given the chance to shine this weekend is Adrian Mutu, who returns to face his former club for the first time since his move to Chelsea.
“Mutu is doing well and this could be his turn,” admitted Capello. “I have some ideas on how to use him in the team and it isn’t easy to leave out people like him and Marcelo Zalayeta. This year we have many matches and those who aren’t happy with spending some time on the bench can talk to the club and request a transfer. There will be room for everyone, including Alessandro Del Piero.”
The Turin giants have drawn at the Stadio Tardini for the last two years running and Parma haven’t won here since 2002. “The Stadio Tardini is always a difficult place to play in. Parma have players of great quality and I don’t think they have any major weaknesses. Everyone raises their game when they face Juventus, so we’ll have to be very focused.”
The reigning Serie A Champions have the opportunity to maintain their 100 per cent record and further extend their lead over Inter and Milan. “This is a great team, one of the best I’ve had at my disposal in my career,” said Capello. “Right now, this is a truly super squad.”
Juventus squad: Chiellini, Vieira, Kovac, Pessotto, Emerson, Ibrahimovic, Del Piero, Nedved, Chimenti, Balzaretti, Camoranesi, Trezeguet, Mutu, Zambrotta, Blasi, Thuram, Bonnefoi, Giannichedda, Olivera, Zalayeta, Cannavaro, Abbiati
Juve dismiss Iaquinta claim
Football Italia
Juventus insist they have absolutely nothing to do with Vincenzo Iaquinta’s contract dispute at Udinese. The striker, widely regarded as the Friuli outfit’s best player, was frozen out of the squad on the eve of Wednesday’s game against the Turin giants. That has inevitably led to whispers of ‘interference’ from the Old Lady, but they have maintained Iaquinta is of no interest.
"Selfishly speaking, I was happy that he didn’t play against us," said transfer guru Luciano Moggi. "However, I don’t know what the problem is and I can’t comment on it. But I will repeat yet again that we have no need for any more strikers, we already have quite enough."
Udinese decided to freeze out the Italian international after talks over a contract extension collapsed given the player’s wage demands. The club acted in a similar way with playmaker David Pizarro last season before he was sold to Inter in the summer.
"I understand what he is going through because it is often the player who gets the blame," the Chilean told Sky Italia. "However, it was odd that it happened on the eve of the game against Juventus. This certainly weakened Udinese. I hope that he can resolve his problems because he is a very interesting player. There is also his national team to think about so I hope he is back in the side soon."
Vieira In Henry Warning
Goal.com
Former Arsenal midfielder Patrick Vieira has hinted that the Gunners may have to strengthen their squad if they are to keep Thierry Henry at the club. Vieira left Highbury in the summer to join Juventus where he believes he has a better chance of winning the Champions League.
"Thierry, I know that he’s talking to the club about a new contract,” he told BBC Five Live. “I think when you want to keep your best players you have to bring some new ones. To do well in Europe you need to have a good team. A few years ago at Arsenal we had a really good team but we didn’t play well enough to win a European trophy."
