Injured Juve duo worry Capello

Football Italia

Juventus may be without Patrick Vieira and Zlatan Ibrahimovic this weekend because of injury. The pair are doubts for the Messina clash after returning from international duty with fitness problems. Vieira was forced out of the 4-0 win over Cyprus after just 24 minutes of last night’s World Cup qualifier.

The central midfielder was already struggling with a groin problem during Saturday’s 0-0 draw in Switzerland. "He was in some real pain, he could not go on any longer even if I’m no doctor," said Les Bleus boss Raymond Domenech. Vieira may now not be risked for Saturday’s clash seeing as Juve have an important Champions League trip to Bayern Munich on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Ibrahimovic may also be absent from boss Fabio Capello’s next starting teamsheet. The giant striker netted in the 3-1 win over Iceland on Wednesday but is thought to have aggravated a knee injury. The striker picked up the initial problem following Marco Materazzi’s horror challenge during the 2-0 win over Inter in Week 6.

There are also still doubts over David Trezeguet’s fitness after he suffered a slight thigh strain in the same game. Capello may opt to field Alex Del Piero in attack after his scintillating display against Moldova for Italy.

Juventus coach Capello: No problems with Del Piero

Tribal Football

Juventus coach Fabio Capello insists he remains an admirer of Alessandro del Piero. Del Piero and Capello haven't seen eye-to-eye since the coach's arrival at Juve, but he said yesterday: "To be at the centre of criticism is part of our trade, above all for important players that have given a lot to Italian football.

"Alex has a great character, great humility and is an example for all. My relationship with the player? I have not ever gone looking for an argument, I make my choices based on how much I see in training and secondly in games."

Zambrotta: Del Piero Is Still Important

Goal.com

The left-back of the Italian national team defended his team mate. Gianluca Zambrotta is one of the few players who can feel that they will surely be part of the Azzurri for the next World Cup, even though the player denies this. “Now this isn’t the point, better to talk about the match. The second half was very good, we created many goal scoring opportunities.”

After a lot of criticism, Alessandro Del Piero was back to his best. “No one ever questioned him. He always feels important for Juventus and the national team, and today we could well see what he can do. How is he living the bench? With tranquillity. Everyone likes playing, but at Juve there are many great champions. He waits for his turn."

Del Piero Pleased With Excellent Performance

Goal.com

The Juventus captain proved his critics wrong on Wednesday night. Italy defeated Moldovia 2-1 to end the qualifiers on a high as Del Piero proved his worth yet again. “I’m very satisfied. The goal would have been the cherry on top of the cake, but it doesn’t matter. I scored so much in my career. It was nice to play for 90 minutes.”

In the past days, Lippi declared that Del Piero is still not in the final list for the 2006 World Cup. “It’s his consideration, I must not add anything else. We are all in the run; I think it’s fair to make the choices when close to the World Cup.”

Del Piero was fundamental for Italy’s win on Wednesday night. “This match is an important step for me, but the path of the season will be important. The game was difficult, Moldova was unsportsmanlike because they did not allow us to play. My future? I hope to play a lot and well, but I have no message for Capello. I just think about giving my best on the pitch.”

Juve Ready To Snatch Zanetti From Inter

Goal.com

Inter will have a difficult time keeping Cristiano Zanetti on their team, as the midfielder is strongly tempted to join rivals Juventus on a free at the end of the season. The Nerazzurri will attempt to reach an agreement on a contract renewal by December, but if the talks breakdown they will have to accept the fact that he will leave the club for free in June.

Capello has never hid his admiration for Zanetti, a player with whom he won the 2000/20001 AS Roma Scudetto with. Besides C. Zanetti, there are other nine Inter players with their contracts expiring in June: Cruz, Recoba, Favalli, Toldo, Ze Maria, Kily Gonzales, Wome, and Mihajlovic.

Maduro catches Juventus eye

Football Italia

Italian champions Juventus are reportedly monitoring the performances of Ajax youngster Hedwiges Maduro. Transfer guru Luciano Moggi has been impressed with the 20-year-old, who has already been likened to Edgar Davids and Frank Rijkaard in his homeland.

Moggi is understood to have sent scout Franco Ceravolo to the Czech Republic – Holland tie last week to watch the player. Holland won the game 2-0 and Maduro underlined his potential with a powerful performance in the World Cup clash.

The youngster, who should appear at the German Finals next year, is contracted to the Dutch giants until 2008 and currently earns just £200,000 a season.

U-21: Hungary await in play-offs

Football Italia

Italy will be confident of reaching the Under-21 European Championship Finals after being drawn against Hungary in the play-offs. The Azzurrini, winners of Group 5, will take on their opponents in a two-legged tie in November to reach next summer’s tournament.

Although boss Claudio Gentile knows little about Hungary, he’s happy with the outcome of Thursday’s draw.

"It’s gone well for us," said the 52-year-old tactician. "Hungary are one of the less fancied sides but we shouldn’t forget the past. Last time, all of the second placed teams beat the group winners in the play-offs, apart from Italy of course. We don’t know too much about Hungary, but we will certainly study them carefully before the games."

The former Juventus stopper was also happy with the fact that some of Europe’s big nations will fail to qualify because of today’s draw. "Some strong teams have been paired with each other," he added. "After all, France will play England, Serbia face Croatia, while Switzerland and Portugal meet."

The games kick off on November 11/12 and 15/16, with the group winners having home advantage in the second leg. The Finals themselves will take place between May 25 and June 6, 2006, in one of the eight countries who qualify.

Italy are the reigning European champions after Alberto Gilardino inspired them to the title in 2004.

Full draw:
England – France
Serbia Montenegro – Croatia
Ukraine – Belgium
Russia – Denmark
Czech Rep – Germany
Slovenia – Holland
Hungary – Italy
Switzerland – Portugal

Gattuso: PlayStation mess wouldn't have happened at Juventus

Tribal Football

Rino Gattuso admits AC Milan management let down teammate Alessandro Nesta after a doctor let slip this week that he had injured a hand playing his videogame. Gattuso said: "Now we have the syndrome of the PlayStation.

"At Milan it's important we always communicate with our fans, but it is not always good for the club. Something like this would never have happened at Juventus, the comments would have been blocked long before."

Juventus - Messina

Football Italia

Juventus are very much the form team in Serie A at the moment while Messina are still searching for their first win. The Sicilian outfit are flirting with relegation at this early stage and no side has conceded more goals than the Giallorossi. Many fans will already be resigned to another defeat as they come up against the early pace setters and, unless Messina can shore up their defence, it is hard to see them getting a result. After conceding four goals at home in their last match, ‘keeper Marco Storari could be kept very busy at the Delle Alpi.

Juve on the other hand still have their 100 per cent record intact. Even more impressive, they have conceded just two goals on their way to opening up a five-point lead at the top of the table already. Considering they have done this in the middle of a defensive injury crisis, many of the top flight’s strikers must be shaking with fear at the thought of what they will be like now that many of their missing players are starting to return to full fitness. Add to this David Trezeguet’s early form that has seen the French striker hit the back of the net four times already, and even a surprising three goals from Patrick Vieira, and this encounter could see a repeat of the Bianconeri’s 4-0 demolition of Empoli.

Both sides will go into this game missing important defensive players through long-term injury. Messina are once again without Alessandro Parisi, while Alessandro Birindelli, Jonathan Zebina and goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon are all out for Juve. The Giallorossi will also be without Marco Zanchi as he is suspended as a precautionary measure after he tested positive for a banned substance. The teams do have players returning from injury though as Gianluca Pessotto is back for La Vecchia Signora and Messina’s influential striker Riccardo Zampagna is available again, although there are still concerns over their fitness.

Juventus (probable): Abbiati; Blasi, Thuram, F Cannavaro, Zambrotta; Camoranesi, Emerson, Vieira, Nedved; Del Piero, Ibrahimovic

Messina (probable): Storari; Zoro, Rezaei, Cristante, Aronica; Coppola, Donati; Giampà, D’Agostino, Di Napoli; Zampagna

Capello opts for Europe

Football Italia

Juventus boss Fabio Capello has admitted that he’d rather win the Champions League than the Scudetto this term. Having netted the Italian title at his first attempt last season, the tactician now wants to return to winning ways in Europe.

"Like most fans, I’m saying the Champions League," Capello told Radio Repubblica on Wednesday afternoon. "It is almost like trying to choose between a good vanilla ice cream and a good chocolate ice cream, but I would personally prefer the European Cup."

However, the Bianconeri have made a marvellous start to the defence of their Scudetto crown with six wins out of six.

"Perhaps people will talk about this present Juventus side in a few years even if there is great competition this season," he added. "Looking at the statistics though, the best team that I have bossed is the Milan side which broke all those records."

Nevertheless, the Old Lady are certainly a force this year thanks to their star-studded squad.

"We have Zlatan Ibrahimovic who has matured," added the boss. "He is a young player with great quality, but can still improve. Our midfield now contains Patrick Vieira, one of the best players in the world. We have Christian Abbiati in goal while we wait for Gigi Buffon. Abbiati is someone we can count on and a player who could return to the international fold."

Capello was also quick to praise his centre-back pairing of Fabio Cannavaro and Lilian Thuram. "They do have a certain age now but you only have to think about the Milan pair of Paolo Maldini and Billy Costacurta. We just need to hope that we don’t suffer any injuries."

Capello Hits Back At Blatter

Goal.com

Fabio Capello believes the words Sepp Blatter used to criticize the world’s most powerful clubs in an interview that appeared in this morning’s Financial Times are filled with hypocrisy.

“Yes, there are players that make a lot of money, but it’s a fact that both UEFA and FIFA don’t do anything not to make money when their competitions are held,” said the Juventus coach. “Just to make national teams play more, the governing bodies try to shorten the national leagues, and FIFA are inventing tournaments so they can have their profits,” he added.

Here is the opening part of Blatter’s attack on club football, click on the link present in the left toolbar to access the full article:

"A fortunate few clubs are richer than ever before. What makes this a matter of concern is that, all too often, the source of this wealth is individuals with little or no history of interest in the game, who have happened upon football as a means of serving some hidden agenda.

"Having set foot in the sport seemingly out of nowhere, they proceed to throw pornographic amounts of money at it. What they do not understand is that football is more about grass-roots than idols; more about giving entertainment and hope to the many than bogus popularity to a predictable few; more about respecting others than sating individual greed, whether for adulation or money."

Trezeguet on comeback trail

Planet Football

David Trezeguet has resumed training with Juventus following his thigh injury. The striker picked up the knock against Internazionale and has subsequently missed France's last two World Cup qualifiers.

It is unclear, however, whether or not Juve coach Fabio Capello will risk Trezeguet in the weekend fixture against Messina. It may be more likely that the Frenchman will begin his comeback in Wednesday's Champions League clash against Bayern Munich.

Juventus challenge Man Utd for Bayern Munich's Sagnol

Tribal Football

Juventus are ready to battle Manchester United for Bayern Munich fullback Willy Sagnol. The French international is off contract in the summer and is ready to leave the Bundesliga after refusing a new Bayern contract offer. Juve director general Luciano Moggi wants a new right-back with Giorgio Chiellini failing to convince coach Fabio Capello and ready to ask for a move away.

However, United are in the boxseat for Sagnol as they intend to bid in January for the defender. Gabriel Heinze's injury has accelerated the Premiership giants' need to sign the Frenchman. Juve would prefer to wait until June to snap up Sagnol on a Bosman and Moggi has admitted they lack the spending power to make any significant signings during the winter market.

Italy 2 - 1 Moldova

Football Italia

Christian Vieri and Alberto Gilardino broke their goal droughts against Moldova in Italy's final World Cup qualifier, but Alessandro Del Piero was man of the match. Italy were already qualified for the World Cup when they completed their Group Five campaign by welcoming Moldova to the Stadio Via del Mare in Lecce.

With this in mind, Marcello Lippi fielded an experimental side with 10 changes from the line-up that beat Slovenia 1-0 last week. Fabio Grosso was the only man to maintain his place, as Vincenzo Iaquinta, Christian Vieri and Alessandro Del Piero played in a trident attack.

The Azzurri had a bright start and Simone Barone cut back a cross for Vieri to slide on to the ball, but he turned wide under pressure from close marking. The Milan centre-forward also nodded a Cristian Zaccardo cross well over.

Iaquinta's cross for Vieri was intercepted at the last moment by Pascenco's fingertips, then the former Inter forward failed to make contact on Grosso's centre by inches.

Italy - and Vieri - thought the deadlock had been broken when Del Piero's free kick was palmed on to the crossbar and ricocheted into the path of Vieri, but the goal was disallowed for a debatable offside flag. Vieri's goal drought continues and he was reduced to hysterical laughter by this latest piece of misfortune.

Morgan De Sanctis was made to work hard in order to keep Italy from going behind, as Covalciuc got round Grosso and his angled drive was pushed away with some difficulty. Vieri had another chance on Barone's assist only to be closed down, then Pascenco flew to palm a stunning Daniele De Rossi strike out of the top corner from 20 metres.

A lob from the very active Del Piero was off target and in first half stoppages Pascenco spread his body to stop Iaquinta taking full advantage of a defensive error. Manuele Blasi replaced Daniele Bonera for the second half, but the Juve man took up a midfield position rather than the defensive role he has been experimenting at club level in recent weeks.

Vieri held up the ball for Iaquinta's low half-volley that was smothered by the goalkeeper, while De Sanctis tipped a Rogaciov effort round the post.

On the hour mark there was a great chance, as De Rossi's chipped pass beat the defence to reach Del Piero, but his lob was charged down by some brave goalkeeping. The Juventus star was booked for his clash with Pascenco and the aftermath of that move, as he went to see how his opponent was and the referee - and Moldovan players - assumed he was trying to drag him up from the ground.

Gianluca Zambrotta came on for Grosso, but it took a crucial De Rossi intervention to stop Boret turning in from the edge of the box. Lippi's final substitution saw Alberto Gilardino join his Milan teammate Vieri and Del Piero, as Iaquinta made way.

Vieri finally broke through, though much of the credit goes to Del Piero. The Juve man fought past two challenges on the left flank and his low cross beat the goalkeeper before reaching Vieri for a tap-in from five yards. Tellingly considering his current form, the ex-Inter striker nearly failed to net such an easy chance, as he needed two touches to get it under control.

However, the Azzurri seemed to relax after that and Moldova equalised within five minutes. Boret held up a Covalciuc cross for a fine angled volley from Gatcan that beat De Sanctis at the far corner. Del Piero was by far Italy's best player on the night and cut back for De Rossi's sliding finish that was inches wide of the upright.

Gilardino was guilty of the worst miss of the night, as his free header on Vieri's cross was horribly wide with only the goalkeeper to beat. He made up for it moments later, however, as the Milan man restored Italy's lead. Gila controlled a deflected Aimo Diana pass and drilled it into the far corner with the outside of his right foot.

Del Piero was churning out assists for his team-mates and Barone failed to make the most of another inspired pass. Not everyone appreciated Del Piero's performance, as after he skipped past four challenges at the by-line, Lascencov started a brief scuffle.

Italy: De Sanctis; Zaccardo, Bonera (Blasi 46), Materazzi, Grosso (Zambrotta 62); Diana, De Rossi, Barone; Iaquinta (Gilardino 67), Vieri, Del Piero

Moldova: Pascenco; Lascencov, Catinsus, Priganiuc, Savinov; Olexic, Boret, Gatcan, Covaliciuc; Dadu, Rogaciov (Miterev 87)

Lippi: Win will boost confidence

Football Italia

Marcello Lippi claims the 2-1 win over Moldova boosted confidence, above all for Alessandro Del Piero, Christian Vieri and Alberto Gilardino.

“Del Piero played a wonderful game and was lauded by the fans,” said the Coach after Italy’s final World Cup qualifier at Lecce’s Stadio Via del Mare. “I wish that happened more often rather than receiving insults. Both Vieri and Gilardino had the psychological need to score goals, so I am happy they were on target.”

Yet it was a difficult match for the Azzurri, who struggled before breaking the deadlock in the final 20 minutes.

“Apart from our rather predictable problems to begin with, as this was a totally revolutionised side, we were facing a team that stayed lodged in its own half without attacking at all. I was interested in seeing 90 official minutes played by those who have not had as much room of late.”

Gilardino sealed the victory five minutes from time and put some disappointing club performances behind him, but insisted he has not struggled since his move to Milan.

“The most important thing was to conclude this qualifying round on the right foot,” said the £17m summer signing. “I am happy with the goal, but I am not in a crisis. If I am here today then it is down to my method of training and playing, so I think I know how to best achieve my form.”

The former Parma striker missed a golden opportunity just moments before his decisive goal, but made up for the error in style. “That opportunity was probably easier than the one I scored, but the important thing is to be in the right position, then eventually the goal will come.”

Del Piero answers his critics

Football Italia

Alessandro Del Piero was the star of the show against Moldova, answering those critics who claim he shouldn’t go to the World Cup.

“I am very satisfied with my performance, although of course to score a goal would’ve been the icing on the cake,” said the captain after Italy’s 2-1 win. “The most important thing was to play well for 90 minutes, as I’ve scored many goals in my career, so I don’t mind being left empty-handed.”

The Juventus man was in the headlines this week, as Coach Marcello Lippi announced that Del Piero was by no means certain of a place in the 2006 World Cup squad, especially if he continues to warm the bench in Turin.

“I have nothing to say to that, as it was his right to make that consideration. I think we are all in the running for this squad and the tactician should be free to make his choices. If someone has a poor season in the run-up to the tournament, then it’s understandable he’ll be dropped. Obviously I hope to play a lot of football – and of good quality – but all I can do is give 100 per cent when I’m on the field.”

The Stadio Via del Mare crowd was right behind Del Piero and he certainly appreciated the support after being such a bone of contention in the Press. “This match represents an important step for me, but the entire campaign will be more decisive. I must thank the people of Lecce for cheering me on, as it gave me a great deal tonight.”

Azzurri legend Gigi Riva also rushed to Del Piero’s defence following the reams of newspaper print on his status.

“Del Piero was very motivated and really wanted to prove a point tonight. Nonetheless, we should not be remotely surprised by this performance, as he is a world class player and has been proving that for the last 10 years.”

Bianconeri team-mate Gianluca Zambrotta gave an insider’s view on the situation at Juventus this season.

“Alessandro has never been questioned in my eyes, as he has proved he’s on great form and tonight took people on with great ease. It’s clear that he’s not happy at being on the bench, but there are many world class players at Juventus and he’s willing to wait his turn.”

Italy have completed their World Cup qualifying campaign with seven wins, two draws and just one defeat – having scored 17 goals and conceded eight. Norway enter the play-offs from Group Five.

“We played well and certainly improved after the break, creating several scoring opportunities,” added Zambrotta. “The important thing was to maintain this good run of results.”

Thuram makes France pledge

Football Italia

Juventus stopper Lilian Thuram has dismissed speculation that he will retire from international football again once France’s World Cup qualification campaign is over. The defender has picked up a string of injuries since he returned to the France team two months ago, but remains determined to compete in the Finals with Les Bleus.

"The people who have been spreading the rumours should have asked me the question directly," said the 33-year-old. "It’s not very positive to hear this when the group is trying to prepare for a match."

Thuram will be fit to take his place in the centre of defence against Cyprus, but admitted he is concerned that his body can no longer cope with playing both international and club football.

"I wasn’t in great shape towards the end of last season," he explained. "With the France matches to play as well, maybe I won’t be physically capable of taking part in the World Cup. There’s no point in people counting on me if I am not able to do it. If I finish the season in a washed out state, I will stand to one side.

"But that’s not the case for the moment. If I am fine physically then there is no doubt as far as I am concerned. Why would I stop? If I am in a physical state that allows me to play well, I’ll be there."

The former Monaco and Parma ace has already amassed 107 international caps and is closing in on Marcel Desailly’s all-time record of 116.

Ajax's Maduro wows Juventus scout Ceravolo

Tribal Football

Juventus scout Franco Ceravolo has presented director general Luciano Moggi with a glowing report on Ajax midfielder Hedwiges Maduro. Ceravolo watched Maduro turn in a superb performance against the Czech Republic in Prague on the weekend and likened the 20 year-old to former Juve midfielder Edgar Davids and ex-AC Milan great Frank Rijkaard.

Maduro's positioning and aggression in the tackle belies his young age and Ceravolo says the midfielder would have no problem with the demands of Serie A football.

Moggi knows Maduro is contracted to Ajax until 2008, but at just £200,000-a-year his representatives are sure to demand a bigger deal from Ajax - particularly if he impresses in the World Cup. That is when Juve are expected to make their move.

Palermo to land Juventus keeper Abbiati

Tribal Football

Palermo are set to sign AC Milan goalkeeper Christian Abbiati at the end of his loan with Juventus. The Sicilians have been linked with Hearts goalkeeper Craig Gordon, but the player's agent rubbished the reports, claiming that Palermo would be signing Abbiati instead. Abbiati is on-loan at Juve as a replacement for Gigi Buffon, who expects to be available in December.

Thuram to retire - again

Football Italia

Juventus’ Lillian Thuram is set to announce his second retirement from international football after France’s World Cup qualifier against Cyprus on Wednesday. According to reports in France on Tuesday, the 33-year-old would have made his announcement last Sunday, had Les Bleus defeated Switzerland and qualified directly for Germany 2006.

Sources close to the World Cup-winning right-back claim he is no longer physically capable of playing at the highest level for both club and country. The former Monaco and Parma player missed several games with current club side Juventus after returning from France’s qualifiers against the Faroe Islands and Ireland with a thigh injury.

He revealed at the time the full toll international football placed on his body: "Any international match, even against the Faroe Islands, is more physically demanding than Juventus versus Milan."

Thuram initially announced his international retirement after the disappointing Euro 2004 campaign. However he was persuaded to return to the fold last August, to help France qualify for the World Cup, by fellow premature retirees Zinedine Zidane and Claude Makelele.

Del Piero: Me Or Cassano? Both!

Goal.com

The Juventus forward would like to see both him and Cassano at the next World Cup. Now that Italy has qualified for the 2006 edition of the World Cup, Marcello Lippi will have to take the decision of which players to take to Germany, and which to leave back home in Italy.

The most difficult choice seems that related to the fifth and last striker position which the media have already identified to be one between Del Piero and Cassano, something which did not go down too well with the Bianconeri’s captain.

“Someone always sponsors this little game with me. Del Piero and Cassano together? Why not?” Italian legend Paolo Rossi declared that he would prefer the Roma player to Del Piero. “What can I tell you? I supported him during the World Cup: if I don’t have his respect, I hope I have that of somebody else.”

Pinturicchio is expected to start on Wednesday in the last qualifying match for the Azzurri. “My last match was against Ireland. Now I would like to celebrate my return with a goal, just like in the first leg against Moldova. It doesn’t matter that we’re already qualified, I give the right meaning to this match: when I undertake a commitment, I take it forward."

Lippi issues Del Piero warning

Football Italia

Italy boss Marcello Lippi has made the shock admission that Alex Del Piero may not be selected for the 2006 World Cup Finals. The Juventus captain was once an untouchable figure in the national squad, but he has been warned on Tuesday that he isn’t assured of making the trip to Germany.

Although Del Piero will start against Moldova on Wednesday, the tactician has taken the extraordinary step of publicly questioning the 31-year-old’s ability. "I have to be honest, Del Piero is not part of the group of players who are certain to be included in the squad," Lippi stated. "There are some individuals here who will go to the World Cup, others will have to earn their place.

"But Del Piero is an intelligent man. If he continues to work hard as he is doing now then there won’t be a problem. All of the players from now on must do well game after game, that is their destiny at this time."

Although Lippi and Del Piero worked together successfully at Juventus in the past, the Bianconeri legend is no longer assured of a first team shirt in Turin under Fabio Capello. He will probably also face stiff competition from Roma’s Antonio Cassano for a spot in the final 23-man squad. Lippi has confirmed that Alex will form a trident attack alongside Christian Vieri and Vincenzo Iaquinta on Wednesday.

Lippi opts for the reserves

Football Italia

Italy boss Marcello Lippi is expected to make 10 changes from the side that beat Slovenia for Wednesday’s game against Moldova. With qualification for the 2006 World Cup already secured, the tactician will use tomorrow’s match to try out a few of his reserve players.

Palermo left-back Fabio Grosso is set to keep his place in the side, while Alex Del Piero will return after not featuring at the weekend. Morgan De Sanctis is being tipped to start in goal, behind a rearguard of Cristian Zaccardo, Marco Materazzi, Daniele Bonera and Grosso.

Simone Barone, Daniele De Rossi and Manuele Blasi are set to be confirmed in the engine room. While Del Piero will aid the attacking duo of Christian Vieri and Udinese striker Vincenzo Iaquinta. Most eyes will be on Del Piero who many believe is in direct competition with Roma’s Antonio Cassano for a place in the final World Cup squad.

"I am well used to these types of duels," stated the Juventus captain. "Even if I don’t understand why I am always involved. There are always people out there who sponsor these things. But I have another idea, why can’t Cassano and I play together?"

Although the Lecce clash is worthless to the team, the No 10 is keen to use it as a stage to demonstrate his ability.

"The fact that we have already won the group is not important, this game matters to me," he continued. "I last played in the friendly against Ireland and I want to return to the side with a goal, just as I did in the first game against Moldova."

When asked about Italy’s chances of success in Germany next year, Del Piero was remaining upbeat. "We are a good side, as we have been saying for some time," he stated. "Our squad is made up of players who work hard and rest little."

U-21: Palladino sinks Moldova

Football Italia

A late goal from Raffaele Palladino concluded Italy’s European Under-21 Championship qualifying campaign with a win over Moldova. The Azzurrini were already assured top spot in Group Five and a place in the play-off to enter the Finals, so they fielded an experimental side in this last qualifier.

The deadlock was eventually broken in the final minutes, as Graziano Pelle’ shrugged off three challenges and placed a perfect angled pass for Palladino to spring the offside trap and nutmeg the goalkeeper.

It was a splendid goal for the Livorno striker, although much of the credit must go to Lecce man Pelle’. Italy end their qualifying campaign with eight wins, a draw and a defeat on their way to defend the European Championship title.

“It wasn’t an easy game because Moldova still had a chance and were motivated, while we had several new faces, but the lads wanted to win this game and they achieved that,” said Coach Claudio Gentile.

“We allowed them far too much space to begin with, but that’s understandable for a lot of players, especially as Giorgio Chiellini was in a new position. I’d like to praise Pelle for his part in the goal and overall I was pleased with the performances of these players.”

On Friday the draw will decide who Italy must challenge in November for the right to enter the European Under-21 Championship Finals. “Now we await the play-offs and in two games we’ll gamble with the two years of hard work it took us to reach this stage.”

Chiellini returned to the Azzurrini after a spell in the senior side and was handed the captain’s armband, even though he found himself in another unusual role.

“The Coach needed a midfielder due to the suspended players, but it was just important for me to play football! There were many youngsters here from the Under-20 side and we all gelled together, trying hard to help each other out,” said the Juventus benchwarmer.

Livorno’s Palladino is pushing for a starting place in those play-offs, as he has now scored two goals in three games for the Azzurrini.

“It’s a good time for me and I know these games are important to prove my worth to the Coach. A striker’s lot is an odd one, as there are times when you can’t score from a yard and others where you almost net by accident.”

Juventus ponder Del Piero swap for Arsenal's Henry

Tribal Football

Juventus striker Alessandro del Piero is being linked with Arsenal. Del Piero is contracted to Juve until 2008, but club powerbrokers are unhappy with his decline in form in the last 18 months and are ready to offload him at the end of the season.

Tottenham and Palermo have both made enquiries after the 28 year-old, who has also knocked back a mega bucks move to Japan as he wants to continue playing in Europe.

Juve are considering using Del Piero as bait to land Arsenal captain Thierry Henry. The Serie A champs are reluctant to give Del Piero a free transfer, but know that very few clubs can afford a fee on top of his massive wage demands.

A straight swap is being mooted with Arsenal as their manager Arsene Wenger seeks a replacement for veteran striker Dennis Bergkamp.

Juventus powerbroker Elkann hospitalised for overdose

Tribal Football

Juventus powerbroker Lapo Elkann was hospitalised on Monday evening in Turin for a drug overdose, a city official said. Riccardo Caldara, a spokesman for the city of Turin, confirmed Italian news agency reports that Elkann had been taken to Mauriziano hospital, but said he had no other details.

"Lapo Elkann was hospitalized this morning for respiratory problems of pharmacological origin," said a statement issued by Fiat. "His condition isn't worrisome and medically absolutely stable."

Lapo is the grand-son of the late Gianni Agnelli, and is currently the marketing director of the family's crown jewel, car company FIAT. Even though he isn't part of the Juventus management team, Lapo's family lineage gives him a great amount of power over the decision making.

Juventus captain Alessandro del Piero said last night: "I wish Lapo all the very best. Forza Lapo."

Capello snubs Azzurri option

Football Italia

Juventus boss Fabio Capello has again hinted that he is not interested by the idea of coaching a national side. Capello has achieved just about everything in the club game after winning honours with Milan, Real Madrid, Roma and now Juventus. Some have talked about him as a possible Italian national boss in the future but that idea seemingly doesn’t appeal.

"I’m happy and proud that Italy have now qualified for the World Cup with a game to spare," said the tactician. "However, I am certainly not jealous of my colleague Marcello Lippi or of his successes."

Capello would be a prime candidate to become the next Azzurri Coach seeing that he is widely regarded as one of the best in Europe. The multi-Scudetto winner, who was approached by the English FA before they appointed Sven Goran Eriksson, seemingly prefers domestic football though.

Capello, who won the title with Juventus at his first attempt last term, is contracted to the Old Lady until June 2007. Lippi’s contract with the Italian national side currently expires after next summer’s World Cup in Germany.

The Azzurri qualified for that event on Saturday night when a Cristian Zaccardo header was enough to beat Slovenia. Italy are next in action on Wednesday when they play Moldova at Lecce’s Via Del Mare Stadium.

I was poor, admits Vieira

Football Italia

Patrick Vieira says his performance against Switzerland was "very, very average" and is determined to redeem himself against Cyprus on Wednesday. The Juventus midfielder struggled to get into the match on Saturday, squandering possession on numerous occasions as Les Bleus limped to a 1-1 draw in Berne.

"Considering how important the game was, my performance was very, very average," Vieira admitted. "In the first half I wasn’t good at all. In the second half I was average. Luckily for me I have the chance to redeem myself on Wednesday."

Vieira, Zinedine Zidane and Lilian Thuram have all been struggling with groin problems in the past week, but the former Arsenal skipper was reluctant to use the injury as an excuse.

"A lot of incorrect information has been circulating," he explained. "If I'm out on the pitch it means I am ready to play. It’s not a confidence problem either. I have belief in myself, particularly as everything has gone so well so far with Juventus.

"So I am strong in my head, it’s my legs that aren’t following. It’s fair to say that Lilian, Zizou and myself missed a lot of training sessions last week, but we can’t use that as an excuse. I take full responsibility for the imperfections and the insufficiencies in my game."

France must now beat Cyprus by a hatful of goals to be sure of finishing top of Group 4.

"I think our chances are 50-50," Vieira said. "It’s not impossible that Switzerland will win in Ireland. That said we are happy that Ireland beat Cyprus on Saturday because it means they’ll be extremely motivated on Wednesday."

Del Piero praise for Azzurri

Planet Football

Juventus captain Alessandro Del Piero has been full of praise for the Italian national side following their World Cup qualification. The Azzurri have qualified for Germany with a game to spare, with Wednesday's clash with Moldova now nothing more than a practice run for Marcello Lippi and his side.

Del Piero believes Italy deserve credit for the professional manner in which they have secured progression - with the talismanic schemer confident pre-tournament preparations will be spot on.

''We are really satisfied for this really important result, arrived in advance, in what has been a really important moment for the national side,'' said Del Piero. ''We will now play Moldova and the next friendlies with serenity. We'll take advantage of these months to prepare better with our details.''

Zlatan sets Euro aim

Planet Football

Swedish striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic has declared that Juventus' primary target this season is the UEFA Champions League. The Old Lady of Italian football proved themselves the top dogs in Serie A last season and Ibrahimovic is eager for the team to replicate their success on the European stage.

"The Scudetto is already here, now we want the Champions League," Ibrahimovic told Corriere della Sera. Juve have a perfect record in all competitions so far this season and the Swede admits the players have come accustomed to success.

"Our secret is our mentality," he added. "All the players want to win. We have good experience and togetherness. If someone makes a mistake, the rest will help."

The tall Swede proved a major success in his first season in Serie A last term, drawing comparisons with Marco van Basten, but Ibrahimovic feels it is too early for him to be mentioned in the same breath as the Dutchman.

"Van Basten is a legend," he added. "He played superbly in Italy and everyone saw he was the best. I have a long way to go to reach that level. In Italy I am learning and thanks go to coach (Fabio) Capello. I like working with him.

"When I knew of Juve's interest, I was happy and wanted to move to an important league. When I arrived he told me 'you are my investment for the future' and it made me feel good."

Ibrahimovic could find himself the subject of a cheeky transfer offer. A Swedish football fan scooped €13 million on the lottery and hinted on claiming his prize that he would like to bring Ibrahimovic to second division side Gute.

"We discussed the possibilities of buying Zlatan for Visby club Gute," national lottery spokesman Tommy Wahlgren said after talking to the 36-year-old winner, who was not named. Juve paid Ajax €16 million for Ibrahimovic and are likely to resist all offers for their Swedish star.

Juventus chief Moggi closer to Italy post

Tribal Football

Juventus director general Luciano Moggi is being linked with a job with Marcello Lippi's Azzurri backroom staff. Moggi could be offered a part-time role with Italy to take care of responsibilities at the World Cup, including commitments with FIFA, the media and also handling player issues.

Lippi and Moggi have an excellent relationship and while he won't consider leaving Juve for the national team, a part-time role would be considered positively by Moggi.

Villarreal's Rodriguez not interested in Juventus offer

Tribal Football

Villarreal fullback Gonzalo Rodriguez has told his agent not to bother him with talk of a move to Juventus - because he just isn't interested. The Argentina international told AS: "There are rumors, but I only think about Villarreal. The truth is that I am very happy here and I would like to stay for many years more.

"When I was at San Lorenzo, Juve wanted to sign me. Now my representative will not say anything to me because I want to focus on my club. The rumours around will not affect me."

Juventus keep tabs on Ajax kid Maduro

Tribal Football

Juventus are interested in Ajax midfielder Hedwiges Maduro. The 20 year-old is being scouted by Juve as they weigh up an end of season move for the defensive midfielder. Maduro is contracted to Ajax until 2008.

Lottery winner eyes Ibra swoop!

Football Italia

An unnamed lottery winner wants to sign Juventus forward Zlatan Ibrahimovic for his local Swedish football team. The new millionaire, who scooped just over £9m, pondered the idea of netting the Sweden international for Second Division outfit Gute.

"We discussed the possibility of signing Zlatan for Visby club Gute," said Tommy Wahlgren, a spokesman for the Swedish lottery organisation. The 36-year-old winner, who is unemployed, is a massive fan of the 23-year-old attacking talent. Ibrahimovic joined Juve in August 2004 when a fee of around £11.5m was agreed with Ajax Amsterdam.

Lippi hails ‘irreplaceable’ Totti

Football Italia

Marcello Lippi has conceded that he has no natural replacement for Francesco Totti in his Italy side. The Romanista is a key element in Lippi’s preferred 4-3-1-2 formation, so vital that the Coach has admitted that a system change will take place in his absence.

"There are no alternatives for Totti in Italy," Lippi told Italian television show La Domenica Sportiva. "If we are ever forced to play without him then we will need to change our style, to 4-4-2 for example. Totti is a player who has been able to transform himself into a real attacker, but he always dictates the play."

Italy will be without the No 10 on Wednesday as suspension has ruled him out of the insignificant World Cup qualifier against Moldova. However, Lippi insists he has enough attacking talent to still achieve success without the Giallorossi hero.

"The likes of Christian Vieri and Alex Del Piero can both be decisive," he added. "They have my faith and that is important. I also still believe that Vieri is one of the best centre-forwards in circulation at this moment in time."

Lippi also defended his decision to replace Luca Toni in the 1-0 win over Slovenia on Saturday, thus giving the Palermo fans another opportunity to jeer him. "He’d already been widely whistled even before kick-off, so those he received when substituted meant little," noted the tactician. "A Coach needs to just think about tactical decisions and therefore not situations like this."

Toni was targeted by the boo-boys following his decision to quit Palermo for Fiorentina in the summer.

Inter prepare Salgado bid

Football Italia

Inter are now in pole position to sign Michel Salgado from Real Madrid, according to reports in Italy. The Spaniard was being heavily linked with a January move to Juventus, but the Nerazzurri are the new favourites to land the defender.

Juve no longer seem to need another right-back, given the successful transformation of Manuele Blasi from a midfielder into a full-back. While Inter do need another player in that position as they only have Javier Zanetti in that role – who is currently injured.

Whispers in the peninsula suggest that agent Ernesto Bronzetti has already commenced talks between the two clubs. Real have previously dismissed claims of a Salgado exit even though they will complete the capture of Brazilian wing-back Cicinho in the New Year.

Salgado, 31, could become the fifth Real player to move to Inter in recent times after the captures of Esteban Cambiasso, Santiago Solari, Walter Samuel and Luis Figo. The Madrid-based stopper has also been associated with a possible move to Manchester United.

Lippi: You've seen nothing yet!

Football Italia

Marcello Lippi is just gearing up to the tournament in Germany and claims: “The good times are still to come. Up until now we’ve only had an antipasto of football, a mere taste. The real magic will be at the World Cup,” smiled the Coach after last night’s 1-0 win over Slovenia ensured qualification.

“Anyone with common sense will say Brazil are the favourites, but it is pleasing to see players like Ronaldo suggest Italy are also contenders. We’re all very proud to have qualified a round early, but the difficulties and the joys are yet to come.”

Some sections of the Italian Press – and indeed World Cup winning tactician Enzo Bearzot – have likened this team to the one that went on to lift the 1982 trophy. “There was a lot of enthusiasm for that tournament and we can count on a revitalised Francesco Totti. When he’s in this kind of form, he’s unmarkable. It’s good to see he has found a relaxed state of mind again.”

Totti’s Roma teammate Antonio Cassano risks missing out on the trip to Germany if he doesn’t play first team football at club level, a situation caught up in a contract dispute. “We can only wait and see what happens,” noted Lippi. “We all hope Cassano can resolve his current problems, as he has only played one full game in three months.”

The Azzurri only needed a point against Slovenia to top Group Five and a late Cristian Zaccardo goal gave them victory. “The fact that a draw would suffice made us a little tense, as we created a great deal and couldn’t quite make the most of our chances,” continued Lippi. “We could’ve won the game a lot earlier and I’m glad Zaccardo was able to score his first international goal in front of his home fans in Palermo.”

Alberto Gilardino and Christian Vieri wasted several scoring opportunities, as did Luca Toni, but the Coach is standing by them. “In my view Vieri is still one of the top three strikers in Italy, while Gilardino’s position in the squad is not up for debate.”

Bearzot: Italy can win World Cup

Football Italia

Italy last won the World Cup in 1982 with Enzo Bearzot at the helm and he trusts the current side - and Francesco Totti - to do the business next summer.

“This seems like a good squad to me and raises its game at the right time,” said the 78-year-old. “Of course, now that the Soviet Union has fractured, there are smaller sides in the qualifying stages and it’s a big leap from these groups to the Finals.”

Bearzot’s Italy side also qualified for the World Cup a round early when it went on to win the trophy, while he was criticised by the Press.

“My advice to Marcello Lippi is to make his own decisions and not listen outside advice, because that’s how you earn the respect of your players. I certainly hope Italy can win the tournament and historically it is their duty to reach the semi-finals. I think this squad is capable of achieving that aim and possibly a little bit more.”

Paolo Rossi was the hero in Spain ’82 and some have compared Milan’s new striker Alberto Gilardino to ‘Pablito.’

“Rossi was more of a counter-attacking threat, while Gilardino is closer to Spillo Altobelli due to his power and elegance,” insisted the tactician. “Luca Toni is an old-fashioned forward like Roberto Bettega, but my favourite is Francesco Totti.

"He’s a world class player who has everything: power, a great shot, vision and the ability to influence the game from behind the front two. He’s one of the best players of the last few years and with his quality could’ve found a place in my World Cup winning team. He just has to be wary of reacting to provocation.”

Totti’s Euro 2004 was cut short by a ban after he was caught on camera spitting at Denmark’s Christian Poulsen. “Nobody, apart from Brazil, has the strength in depth of Italy’s attack force,” added Bearzot. “I also like the defence with guarantees like Alessandro Nesta, Fabio Cannavaro and Gianluca Zambrotta.

"Perhaps we lack something in the middle, as the only real alternative to Andrea Pirlo is 35-year-old Eugenio Corini. Nonetheless, in a World Cup the Palermo captain could be useful.”

Inter Milan chief Oriali hints at Zanetti sale

Tribal Football

Inter Milan transfers chief Lele Oriali has hinted they may seek to sell midfielder Cristiano Zanetti in January. Zanetti has been linked with Juventus and is inside the final 12 months of his current deal with little sign of the midfielder renewing. Oriali admitted: "Time is definitely running out to sign Zanetti to a new contract."

Canna: Juve can win it all

Football Italia

Fabio Cannavaro claims that Juventus can win everything this season with the winning mentality that Inter sorely lack. “This year we can triumph in every competition and we know that, but it’s still early to say,” assured the defender.

Juventus are on stunning form this term with six consecutive wins in Serie A and two in the Champions League, opening up a five-point lead over Milan and Fiorentina. “Patrick Vieira has given us extra quality, quantity and a few more goals, but he’s not the only one who has made the difference. Juve’s strength above all the others is a winning mentality.”

The 2-0 victory over Inter last week highlighted the Bianconeri’s capabilities and Cannavaro believes it also showed who will be the real Scudetto contenders.

“Milan are a very strong side and play good football. Despite the fact they’ve stuttered a little to begin with, I think they remain the ones to beat in Serie A. Inter have a squad of remarkable quality, but perhaps they are a little weak on a psychological level.”

Cannavaro is also the captain of the Italy side that will face Slovenia this evening in a crunch match to qualify for the World Cup.

“I think that the Azzurri are winning new fans as time goes on, especially with good results, and we are here with the aim of winning every encounter,” he continued. “We still have to fight for our ticket to Germany, but we must maintain the concentration we have shown recently. It would be very satisfying to ensure our place a round early.”

Camo sees Juve-style Azzurri

Football Italia

The Azzurri XI set to face Slovenia this evening has Juventus stars in key roles and Mauro Camoranesi feels the same team spirit here. “This Italy squad resembles my club side,” said the Argentine-born midfielder. “It has a winning mentality, several Bianconeri players forming a solid nucleus and a Coach with a Juve past. This is a team that has good feet.”

Lippi is ready to adopt a 4-4-2 system for tonight’s World Cup qualifier, and has already confirmed he will move Gianluca Zambrotta over to the right-back role. He’ll be one of several Juve players along with Fabio Cannavaro, Camoranesi and possibly Manuele Blasi and Alessandro Del Piero. The former Verona man believes that above all the major change has been one of approach.

“There is more quality in the international set-up now, but more than anything else, before Lippi we used to focus on our opponents’ style more than our own.”

Juventus are flying high in Serie A and the Champions League, with their Coppa Italia experience still to begin, and Camoranesi is eyeing The Treble. “I really can’t think about the World Cup yet, as there are eight months to go and anything can happen in that time. Besides, I have three club competitions to win first and the most important success would be in Europe.”

Italy 1 - 0 Slovenia

Football Italia

A diving header from Palermo defender Cristian Zaccardo saw off Slovenia and booked Italy's ticket for the 2006 World Cup.

The Azzurri needed just one point against Slovenia to be certain of qualifying for the 2006 tournament in Germany and fielded a strong front three of Francesco Totti, Luca Toni and Alberto Gilardino. Toni stepped back into the Stadio Barbera for the first time since his summer departure from Palermo and was given a frosty welcome with boos from a section of the crowd every time he touched the ball.

The crowd was more geared towards local hero Fabio Grosso, whose inclusion at left-back switched Gianluca Zambrotta over to the right for a very attacking formation.

Slovenia had been the only side to beat Italy in this qualifying Group, earning a 1-0 victory on October 9, 2004. Gilardino had the first chance after three minutes, running onto a wonderful first touch Totti pass from midfield, but the goalkeeper rushed out to close him down.

Soon after, Gennaro Gattuso's shot was smothered and Mavric got it under control before Toni could pounce on the loose ball. There was also a close call for Slovenia, as an Acimovic free kick shook the side-netting at the near post.

The Azzurri thought they had broken through on 18 minutes when Toni was at full stretch to meet Gilardino's low cross, but the 'keeper performed a good point-blank save to deny the Fiorentina striker.

Totti went for goal with a snapshot from 20 metres that shaved the upright, but the Roma captain was fortunate not to receive a yellow card for a late challenge on Zlogar. Totti was booked soon after for another mistimed tackle, this time on Rodic.

A touched-on free kick for Totti was deflected past the post and Toni sprung the offside trap only to slice wide. Totti deposited the ball into the net, although the move had already been halted for offside - a debatable decision according to the replays.

Another Italy goal was disallowed moments later, as the referee claimed - again, controversially - that Grosso's cross had already gone out of play before Toni nodded it back into the path of Gilardino. Gattuso was also booked on the stroke of half-time for a late challenge on Pakorn. There was time for another great chance, as Totti's header on Grosso's cross was plucked out of the air by Mavric.

There was crowd trouble during half-time with the police intervening in the Slovenian end of the Sicilian stadium. The visitors made a substitution, introducing former Lecce striker Sebastjan Cimirotic. Toni had a couple of early chances after the restart, but in both instances slipped at the crucial moment and the opportunity went begging. Totti's effort was also held comfortably.

Slovenia also had a goal disallowed, although this time the player was clearly in an offside position when he nodded in from seven yards.

The jeers of his former fans were perhaps getting to Toni, who blazed a great Totti pass horribly wide from eight yards. Andrea Pirlo had a long-range strike off target after combining with the active Totti and then his volley was well saved.

Lippi introduced another Palermo player, Cristian Zaccardo, for Gilardino after an hour of play, switching to a 4-4-2 system with Zambrotta pushing up and Totti and Toni in attack. Toni kept getting closer to the goal that would silence his Palermo boo boys, as his glancing header was spectacularly tipped over the bar by Mavric.

The deadlock was eventually broken by local hero Zaccardo after 78 minutes. The substitute came in with a diving header at the far post to nod in Palermo teammate Grosso's centre. It was an important moment for Zaccardo, who had made costly errors in previous internationals against Scotland and the Republic of Ireland.

Soon after, Totti's header was just wide of the upright from a Zambrotta cross and substitute Daniele De Rossi, on for Pirlo, drilled off target. Toni was given a final round of insults as he left the field to be replaced by Christian Vieri for the last couple of minutes.

The Milan hitman had a great chance to make it 2-0 in stoppages when he ran on to Totti's pass, but he drilled wide under pressure from defenders. Moments later he sprung the offside trap and accidentally dragged the ball too far with his second touch, unable to turn into an empty net.

Gentile proud of Azzurrini

Football Italia

Italy have dominated their European Under-21 Championship qualifying group and Claudio Gentile praised their performance against Slovenia.

“Everyone took it for granted that we’d be relaxed for this tie because we were already qualified top of the group,” smiled the Coach following yesterday’s 1-0 win. “Instead, the lads put in a great performance on a pitch that was bogged down by mud, which certainly didn’t help our style of play. The team did well and so did the individuals, such as Raffaele Palladino.”

The slender victory was sealed by Fiorentina’s Giampaolo Pazzini after 17 minutes, but Slovenia were furious after seeing two goals disallowed. “Both of the incidents were clear-cut and the referee had to make those decisions,” insisted Gentile. “The first was an indirect free kick that he was not allowed to score from and the other goal was obviously offside.”

The Azzurrini’s final qualifier is against their Moldovan counterparts on Tuesday evening. They currently lead Group Five on 22 points followed by Belarus on 13, Slovenia 12, Norway and Moldova 11, while Scotland prop up the table on six points.

Juventus keeper Buffon eyes December return

Tribal Football

Crocked Juventus goalkeeper Gigi Buffon believes he can be back in action by December as he continues to recover from a serious shoulder injury.

"I think (Christian) Abbiati has played superbly and he was the decisive factor against Udinese," said Buffon. "And I'm following the expected path to recovery. In the middle of November I will be going back to training and I believe I will be returning to action around the beginning of December.

The Azzurri No 1 does have some reservations about his return though. "I have to admit that, in comparison with previous injuries, this scared me more," he continued. "Sustaining a shoulder injury as a goalkeeper is not good, but I am feeling good and I hope that my teammates will have kept us at the top of the League when I return."

Abbiati: "Utmost committment"

Juventus.com

After the great performance in the match against Inter, Christian Abbiati, called upon at the press conference, confirmed that his integration within the group is going better and better: “As for the win over the Nerazzuri, I must say I’m satisfied with my performance, it feels good when you do not concede any goal in matches like this one.

“As far as I’m concerned, I’m trying to achieve the best condition and matches are the most important training for me; I just need some time as I had been away from the pitch for long”.

He was asked how it feels to defend Juventus’ goal and substitute a goalkeeper like Buffon: “It’s not certainly easy but I’m doing my best, working and training with great committment every day and trying to give my best during matches”.

AC Milan's Abbiati wants Juventus stay

Tribal Football

On-loan Juventus goalkeeper Christian Abbiati says he wants to see out the season in Turin. The AC Milan keeper was signed as a replacement for injured No1 Gigi Buffon, who has declared he will be ready to return to action in December. "I want to play out the season with Juventus," said Abbiati. "After that, I will look at my options."

Chiellini sick of Juve bench

Football Italia

Giorgio Chiellini has warned Juventus that he’s looking for a move to Roma if he doesn’t get more first team football. “I really can’t stand for the fact we’ve played eight games between Serie A and the Champions League, yet I haven’t played a single minute of football with a Juve jersey,” slammed the defender.

“I knew I’d have to wait for my turn and that I am still very young, but I have a desire to play that may take me elsewhere. I can only thank Claudio Gentile and the Under-21 side for giving me the chance to prove my worth. If the situation doesn’t change, then I’ll ask to be sold.”

The 21-year-old full-back impressed last term at Fiorentina, scoring three goals in 37 Serie A appearances and doing enough to earn five caps for the senior Azzurri squad.

However, since his move to Turin in the summer, he has remained firmly rooted to the bench – or even the stands – and returned to the less hallowed Under-21 international line-up. This situation will almost certainly see him drop out of the 2006 World Cup squad contenders.

“Fabio Capello doesn’t talk to me, but that’s just the way he is,” continued the furious defender in the ‘Corriere dello Sport Stadio.’ “I can only assume the fault is mine if I haven’t convinced him of my potential up until this point. Of course Gianluca Zambrotta is the first choice for that role, but I thought that with the squad rotation I might get my chance eventually.”

There is a light at the end of the tunnel for Chiellini, as he was very close to a summer switch to Roma and that move could be completed in the January transfer window. “I would love to join Roma. I do have a few regrets that I didn’t go to the Giallorossi in the first place, seeing how things are going at Juve, but it wasn’t my choice.”

Trap hails all-conquering Juve

Football Italia

Giovanni Trapattoni believes Fabio Capello’s Juventus can do The Double and follow the path set by his reign in Turin. “This Juve reminds me of my own side,” said the Coach who won six Scudetto titles, a European Cup, Intercontinental Cup and two UEFA Cups with the club.

“I effectively had four different Bianconeri sides. The first was purely Italian, the second more workmanlike with Domenico Marocchino and Pietro Paolo Virdis, the third characterised by Michel Platini and Zwibi Boniek and the fourth with Roberto Baggio, Andy Moeller and Gianluca Vialli. All of them won.”

Capello won the Serie A title with Juventus at his first attempt and is currently on target to make it two in a row, as his side is the only one in Europe to have a 100 per cent record in both its domestic League and Europe at this stage in the season.

“Today’s line-up is like a tank, with great physical power, technique and convinced of its own abilities,” continued Trapattoni, who is currently Coaching German outfit Stuttgart. “My first Juve side with Antonio Cabrini, Roberto Bettega, Claudio Gentile, Gaetano Scirea, Marco Tardelli and Franco Causio was extremely strong. Capello’s team may well be its equal and this year it can prove it.”

Azzurri: Lippi looks to Grosso

Football Italia

Marcello Lippi is putting his faith in local hero Fabio Grosso against Slovenia and has experimented with Luca Toni and Alberto Gilardino upfront. “I have no doubts over my line-up, as Gianluca Zambrotta will be on the right and Fabio Grosso on the left,” explained the Italy boss ahead of Saturday’s World Cup qualifier.

The versatility of Juventus star Zambrotta is a key factor for the Azzurri, as he can play on either flank in a full-back or wide midfield position.

“I want to make the most of Grosso’s crossing abilities and his current form, so I will switch Zambrotta over to the right to make room. I thought about it for a little while, but now I have no doubts it is the right choice, especially as we are playing in Palermo.”

Grosso is one of several Rosanero players who have made their mark on the current campaign and he’ll be a local hero when the teams run out in the Stadio Renzo Barbera tomorrow evening.

Former Palermo striker Toni is also set to start after his hat-trick against Belarus, but he could get an intriguing new partner. During the training session, Lippi experimented with Toni and Milan’s Gilardino for a powerful front two.

Gilardino has been struggling since his move to the San Siro and has scored just two goals in six games for the Rossoneri, though the Coach refused to be drawn on what his choice of centre-forwards would be. Only a point is needed against Slovenia to qualify for the 2006 World Cup, but Italy lost the reverse fixture 1-0 – their last defeat in official competition.

“We know that we’ll be playing against a side that’ll do everything it can to beat us and maintain its own hope of qualifying,” noted Lippi. “I told the lads to put themselves in Slovenia’s shoes, as they have only one result that would help them. We must be wary, as I expect an entertaining and hard-fought game of football.

"I want to see an Italy performance that is solid and determined. This game is worth more than the result, as we need a good show to increase our confidence.”

There was concern for Fabio Cannavaro during today’s training session when he left the field after a clash of heads with his former Inter teammate Marco Materazzi. The Nerazzurri defender was medicated for a cut to the forehead, but Cannavaro underwent tests after suffering dizzy spells. Medical staff assure both will be fit to face Slovenia.

Under-21: Pazzini sinks Slovenia

Football Italia

An early goal from Fiorentina striker Giampaolo Pazzini proved enough to give Italy victory over Slovenia in the Under-21 European Championship qualifiers. The Azzurrini were already qualified for the play-offs when they welcomed Slovenia to Vicenza’s Stadio Romeo Menti on Friday evening.

Viola hitman Pazzini opened the scoring after just 17 minutes, as he was at full stretch to turn in a precise Alessandro Rosina cross from the right. The visitors thought they had equalised half-way through the first period with a Stevanovic set-piece, but it was disallowed because the referee had awarded an indirect free kick.

Pazzini and Livorno forward Raffaele Palladino had other chances to double Italy’s lead, although Slovenia saw a second goal disallowed – this time for offside – in the final stages. Italy further extend their lead at the top of Group Five to a staggering nine points over Belarus and will play their final qualifier against Moldova on Tuesday evening.

Elkann plays down Juventus push for Cassano

Juventus director Lapo Elkann has backed away from comments that they're set to sign AS Roma striker Antonio Cassano. Elkann claimed earlier this season that Juve would sign Cassano on a Bosman at the end of this season. But he said yesterday: "Cassano appeals to me. But that doesn't mean Juventus will sign him.
