" Master Lensman Yip Cheong Fun . . . "

Rowing at Dawn (Tangjong Rhu 1955)
Rowing at Dawn (Tangjong Rhu 1955)
The photograph "Rowing at Dawn" has won several gold medals in photographic exhibitions in a number of countries. Many experts agreed that the picture showing a solitary boatman rowing towards several junks against the morning light was a memorable work of art. The motif of shimmering reflections soon emerged as a distinctive style of the photographer's works ! ! !

Can you see the dragons & the fishes of the picture (Rowing at Dawn) ? ? ?

Pensive mood . . .
A photographer the world (almost) forgot .....

In 1980, the Photographic Society of New York elected him the ”Honorary Outstanding Photographer of the Century”. In his adopted Singapore, the Government bestowed upon him a top cultural honour, the Cultural Medallion in 1984. His work has won a slew of international prizes, being exhibited the world over, and are now enjoying a renaissance of sorts.

Born in 1903, The Master Photographer, Yip Cheong-Fun arrived in Singapore as a migrant in his infancy. Throughout his life, Yip was never a man who chased glory or fame. His photography combines both art and history. His masterpieces portray culture and heritage, and interpret the changing moments of Singapore. They are some of the most important and beautiful documents of Singapore's social history taken over the last 60 years. Yet photography remained a hobby to him to the very end.

His single-minded devotion was to his craft, a passion manifest to the end. Around midnight on September 16, 1989, Yip just completed a shoot for the Lantern Festival when he collapsed at the Lakeside train station. In his hand was a loaded camera. However, his unique perspective of Singapore lives on in his photograph.
