Definition: The term "Freudian slip" is derived from psychoanalytic theory and therapy which was founded by Sigmund Freud. A Freudian slip is a mistake or substitution of words either spoken (lapsus linguae) or written (lapsus calami). The mistake is contrary to the conscious wishes of the person speaking or writing. Freud believed that such "slips" come from subconscious and repressed wishes which are expressed through the erroneous word or words -- either spoken or written.
As the concept states, whatever you may produce on the spot may well be whatever you may be thinking about. We do exactly just that. Our music isn't planned and pre-written prior to entering the studio. We go in, jam, and voila! a song is done. However this means that the "song", may just last from 5 minutes to 45 minutes. (Our record is a 2 hour jam which got way out of hand...) All this time, a recorder is running that provides the demo on which the final "song" is based on. (if you're interested in the demos, there are a few below)
How this band was formed was something of an accident. I have known Ikmal and Najeeb for about 3 years, and never jammed with either one of them. Najeeb was primarily influenced by Blues and Latin vibe stuff with a tint of Yngwie Malmsteen and Satriani here and there. And at the point of conception, he had just taken up the guitar in the past year. Hence jamming with him was always a difficulty as the only thing he knew what to do was solo along a given scale. You see, Najeeb had learnt almost all the scales and patterns concerning solos, but hadn't the foggiest idea on how to generate a rhythm pattern with dyads. So eventually, he was moved to play bass to apply what he knows about scales and "shredding" to bass lines. This resulted in producing one of the strangest bassists anyone had ever heard. Ikmal on the other hand, has been drumming for sometime, but had never been interested to jam with me on the basis that I play only rock, he plays only metal. But on the 16th of January 1999, we all happened to walk into the same studio for the hell of it. BOOM! God knows what happened. We just hit it off! We were making out like bandits! It was great! Someone started playing, and the rest just followed. no planning, totally improvised, from rhythms to tempos to solos. It went so well that none of us believed that it happened!
From then on, we were hardly apart musically. Drawing concepts from musicians like Dream Theater, Liquid Tension Experiment, Paradise Lost, Queensryche, Santana and many others.
And as they say,
...the rest is history...
