Ruwan Buddhist Society
Welcome to Ruwan Online Community

History The name ‘Ruwan’ is Sinhalese, meaning “Pearl of Buddhism”, signifying the precious virtues of the Triple Gem. The Society was approved and registered by the Registry of Societies, Singapore, on 8 March 1990. Upon the approval and registration of the Society, the first President, Mr Tan Yew Leong, then invited Venerable K Somananda Thero from Kadihara Temple, Kurunegala, Sri Lanka to be its Religious Advisor. Venerable K Somananda Thero has been the Society’s Religious Advisor since 25 June 1990. With the kind permission of Venerable Sarada, Ruwan’s first Management Committee was held at the Singapore Buddhist Meditation Centre at 11 Neo Pee Teck Lane on 27 October 1990. The Society then had 10 committee members with only 4 ordinary members! Over the years, the Society had moved from different premises, indeed from the western part of Singapore, Jalan Ara (Clementi) and Fajar Road to the eastern part, Waringin Park and Wilton Gardens.
