Well, that's right, SAGE was setup by me . The idea of networking over modems came about to me around 2 years ago . I was thinking since modem games mostly requires at most a 9600bps modem, and 28,800bps modem was already emerging then, I thought with the extra speed, putting in 2 or 3 more players should not be a problem . From then, I was looking for possible solutions to make this a reality .
SAGE started to take off when I got to know about the software Kali . That time, Kali for DOS was on the beta, and I got myself registered immediately . Back then, no one knows about Kali and there were not many network games around except Doom. Internet was only just starting to take off then . I got the Kali and tried it out with a few friends, and it really worked . That's somewhere around June 1995. By end of 1995, SAGE started to go into beta testing, where we tested with games like Warcraft II, and it was incredible and rocks with up to 5 players ! Well, by Decemeber 1995, nearly all the technical portions was solved . I started out with the idea of having 2 nodes, but as time goes by, and with a bit more cash, SAGE was officially launched on 1st June 1996 with 4 nodes on 4 USR Courier .
Meanwhile, I came to know a group of flight simulators fanatics, and I can only say my utmost thanks for all their support and willingness to register themselves to the server before it was officially launch to give me all the financial support needed to get the server up and running . Thanks guys !
The aim of SAGE was never ever much of a money making venture, but to create a home where all gamers gather and belong. The vision was to make SAGE a fun place, with not much rules and restrictions . The registration fees majority goes into the Kali registration, and the rest goes to me, which is used mainly for paying the phone bills and system upgrade .
Finally, I hope you guys will enjoy your stay here in SAGE and enjoy all the great network games available now and to come !
Cheers,
