SUNFLOWER AND THE FIBONNACCI SERIES
- GOLDEN RATIO -

If you look at the number of petals of flowers, majority of plants have a no of petals taken from the series 3,5,8,13,21,34,55,.... The no of petals form the beginning of the so-called Fibonacci series in which each no is the sum of the two that precede. Look at a giant sunflower, you find a remarkable pattern of florets - tiny flowers that eventually become seeds in its head. The florests are arranged in two interesting families of spirals, one winding clockwise the other counter clockwise. In some species the no of clockwise spirals is 55 and the no of counter clockwise spirals is 89. Both are fibonacci nos, occurring consecutively in the series. The precise no depend on the species of sunflower, but you often get 34 and 55, or 55 and 89 or even 89 and 144.
