Health is the
MOST VALUABLE ASSET in our life. However,
the advancement of medical science and technology still has not been
able to provide a solution to modern diseases. In fact, the numbers are
becoming more shocking. For instance:
-
In 2002,
1 of every 2.6 deaths is
caused by cardiovascular diseases.
-
1 of every 3 women and
1 out of every 2 men are at risk of
developing cancer in their lifetime.
-
By 2020 an estimated
1 out of every 5 people
will spend every hour of every day afflicted with crippling pain of
arthritis.
-
1 in 2 women and
1 in 4 men aged 50 and older are at risk of
osteoporosis-related fractures.

Staggering Figures:
-
Cancer
No.1 major killer in Singapore
-
1 out of 4 deaths in Singapore is due to
cancer
-
4,153 Singaporeans died of
cancer in 2003
-
8,000 new cancer cases in Singapore are
discovered each year
-
12 people die from
cancer every minute and 19 are diagnosed with it globally
-
If allowed to
continue, an estimated 10 million
people will die from cancer in 2020, and the of new
cases will increase to 15 million per year
-
US$21 billion: the
estimated cost of cancer drugs globally in 2003;
cancer treatment can be very expensive
World Health
Organisation (WHO) statistics:
-
5% of world population are Very
Healthy
-
25% of world population are
suffering from major illness and chronic diseases
-
70% of world population are
in Semi-Healthy condition.
On the other hand,
an absence of serious diseases or regular illnesses doesn't mean a
person is in good health. In reality, most people are far from being
"healthy". At best, they may be in a "semi-healthy"
condition:
-
Grow tired easily
-
Irritable and
unable to concentrate
-
Dizziness and
insomnia
-
Constant back and
shoulder aches
-
Indigestion or
poor appetite
-
Vulnerable to
common coughs, colds and flu
These may not be
serious illnesses but they are alarm signals that show an
altered cell metabolism
by our body. Left unattended and allowed to worsen, these cells will
become susceptible to infections
and various other chronic health
hazards.

Medical
Therapy VS Nutritional Therapy We can continue to accept the
concept of modern medicine, but this is like addressing our
illnesses by their symptoms and solving them on the surface,
without paying attention to the root cause.
Eventually, it may lead to a recurrence of
the illness or a more serious form of the illness. This
is further supported by the pioneering physician
Hippocrates from ancient Greece,
who believed that “nature cures while the physician merely assists”.

For example, when a
person suffers from allergy, the exposure to allergens (bacteria,
pollen, peanuts etc) will cause the immune system to overreact by
releasing of chemical called histamine to combat them. Histamine
causes annoying allergy symptoms such as itching. In medical
therapy, antihistamines will be prescribed to suppress the release
of histamine. However, antihistamines do not stop the allergic
reaction but protect tissues from some of its effects only. In
addition, antihistamine has occasional side effects that include
urine retention in males and a faster heart beat rate. Thus, it is
important to realise that unless one finds the root of the allergy
problem, the body will persist in producing more allergies and the
person’s health may continue to deteriorate over time. In contrast,
nutritional therapy uses food and supplements to encourage the
body’s natural healing. It works by providing essential nutrients to
the cells, enabling the cells to eliminate the toxins that cause the
allergies and eventually empower you to rebuild your health.

This concept of
nutritional therapy forms part of Molecular
Reform Therapy (MRT), also known as
Cell Reform Therapy. MRT stresses
on the self- management of one’s health based on a holistic approach
to ensure that the cells are being adequately nourished which will, in turn,
reinforce the immune system and
lead to the optimum functioning
of the body.

Men's
Health
As breadwinners, most Asian are
conditioned and expected to be tough and endure stress, fatigue and
sickness. As such, many men ignore their aches and pains, seeing it
as a sign of weakness and prefer to deny their symptoms rather than
consult doctors. A recent survey of men with urinary symptoms showed
that 50% of men waited over a year before seeking help, preferring
to adjust their lifestyle to accommodate their illness.
In addition,
modernisation and urbanisation promote a sedentary lifestyle' a 'westernised
diet' (high fat, high cholesterol, and more processed food with high
sugar content) and bad lifestyle habits like smoking which give rise
to many modern diseases. Worldwide, some of the top 10 diseases
afflicting men are heart disease, stroke,
lung cancer, prostate cancer and
diabetes.
1
Heart Disease
Heart disease is the second
biggest killer in Singapore, accounting for 26 per cent of all deaths.
Heart disease and stroke
has become the No, 1 killer in Malaysia. Two of the main causes are:
-
Smoking - A smoker has more
than double, and up to four times the risk of heart disease than
a non-smoker. Smoking increases your heart rate and your
requirement for oxygen, generally increasing the risk of heart
attack and angina,
-
Diet - A person eating a diet
of too much fat, especially saturated fat, may have almost
double the risk of heart disease.
2
Stroke
Stroke happens when there
is an interruption of blood flow to an area of the brain, due to a
rupture, blockage or clotting of an artery. Causes of stroke
include:
-
High blood pressure - about
40% of strokes can be attributed to high blood pressure.
-
Smoking - A smoker has a 50%
greater chance of suffering a stroke. The nicotine and other
poisonous chemicals in tobacco enter the bloodstream and damage
the artery wall. Exposure to fumes containing free radicals may
promote the growth of atherosclerotic plaques, and chronic
carbon monoxide intoxication limits the heart's utilisation of
oxygen.
-
Nutrient Deficiency - Stroke
has been linked to a deficiency of vitamins, A, B12, C, D and E
and minerals such as selenium, magnesium.

3
Lung Cancer
Lung cancer in Singapore is
the leading cause of cancer in men and the second most common cancer in
women. One out of every five persons who died from cancer had lung
cancer. An estimated 85% of lung cancer cases in males and 75% in
females are caused by cigarette smoking. Less than 10% of lung cancers
occur among non-smokers.
Half of adult Malaysian
males smoke, a figure much higher than those in developed countries
like the U.K. (38%), USA (35%) and Sweden (30%). About 90% of all
lung cancer cases have been attributed to smoking, while cigarette
smoking is believed to account for 25% of the total deaths in
Malaysia. Daily exposure to second-hand smoke increases the chances
of developing lung cancer by 30%.
Cigarette smoke contains
over 4,000 chemicals many of which cause cancer:
-
Nicotine - a poisonous and
highly addictive chemical that stimulates the nervous system,
increases the heart rate, raises blood pressure and constricts
small blood vessels.
-
Tar & radioactive compounds -
have poisonous chemicals which can cause cancer.
-
Carbon monoxide - reduces
oxygen in red blood cells available to body organs
-
Hydrogen cyanide - damages the
natural lung cleaning mechanism, resulting in build-up of toxic
substances.
4
Prostate
Cancer
It is the 6th commonest
cancer in the Singaporean men. With a risk of 1 in 14,
prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed male cancer, yet the
actual cause is still unknown. The risk factors of prostate cancer
are:
-
Age - risk increases sharply
with age. 85% of prostate cancer deaths are in men over 70 years
of age.
-
Family history - Men who have a
father or brother who developed prostate cancer may be at a
higher risk.
-
High fat diet - dietary fat may
increase levels of the androgen hormone, known to promote the
development of prostate cancer. Fat of animal origin appears to
carry the highest risk.
5
Diabetes
Overweight men have four
times the risk of diabetes than men who maintain a healthy weight.
High consumption of red meat, processed meat, high-fat dairy
products and refined grains, combined with obesity and inactivity,
is linked to a high risk for Type 2 diabetes in men.
Health
For Life Living in this modern
society should not spell ill-health for men. For most,
changes to dietary, lifestyle and habits can help you be
in good health:
- have a healthy diet
and eat more fresh fruits and vegetables, or take
supplements to ensure adequate nutritional intake
- Exercise at least 30
minutes a day, 3-4 times a week
- Stop smoking and
drink alcohol in moderation
- Regularly detoxify
the body by fasting or taking a detoxification
supplement

AGE WELL WITH ELKEN
The
young usually think they are immortal. Hectic lifestyle, stress, poor
dietary habits and smoking all form part of a vicious cycle leading into
the 'black hole' of chronic diseases.
Symptoms of illnesses and diseases only
start to appear in middle age. That's when we start to pay for the
excesses of our youth. It is no surprise then that many people aged 50 and
beyond are more susceptible to diabetes, heart diseases and other medical
conditions.
To worsen the situation, it becomes harder
for our bodies to absorb and assimilate much-needed nutrients from the
food we eat as we grow older. That is why elderly people need to take
extra care of their body, not just to maintain their health, but also to
slowly recover from the their previous excesses. The easier way to achieve
this is by taking quality supplements.
Elken's MRT concept promotes healthy living
by supplying balance nutrition, increasing oxygen intake, detoxifying the
body and regulating our health.
We can't take back the clock; we can only
make amends by taking extra care of our body to ensure that our years
remain golden. Start with Elken now. After all, prevention is better then
cure; none of us want to end up a burden to our children.

Heart diseases is No. 1 cause
of death for women
To worsen matters, research
that even in developed countries like the US, 75% of women do not meet
current adequate intakes of calcium and 90% have inadequate intakes of
folate and Vitamin E from food sources alone.
