Components

FrontPage Components provide special instructions to the web server software, and sometimes web browser software - instructions that go beyond those typically included as part of the standard HTML instructions that comprise a standard web page.  Not every web server understands these special instructions, however.  All FrontPage-generated Components that reside on a web server, such as Hit Counter, work only on web servers that have either the FrontPage Personal Web Server installed (as might be the case in a small intranet) or FrontPage Server Extensions installed (as might be the case on a large intranet or on an Internet server.)

These special instructions created by the FrontPage Component are called SmartHTML.  A web server  with FrontPage Server Extensions installed can correctly interpret such codes.
