Many investors dismiss the importance of dividends and go for capital appreciation only. But over the long
term, the price of a share bears a strong and definite relationship with its dividend stream. The share price
may fluctuate greatly within a range but any sharp rise is temporary, unless its dividend rises.
Therefore, an investment into a profitable growing company is based on the principle that its dividends will
increase year after year, while return from alternative investment (fixed deposit) remains fixed.
During market downturns, a share with a decent dividend yield drops less. When the share price drops, its
dividend yield rises, encouraging value and income-oriented investors to come in.
The talk will discuss some of the benefits and significance of dividends in stock investment, using a number
of case studies.
