Amrita and the Trees is an adaptation of an Indian folktale entitled Hugged the Trees. The story is about a little girl named Amrita who lived at the edge of a desert. She befriended the animals living in the nearby forest.
One day, Uncle Bolly arrived at the forest and fell in love with the scenery of the desert. Being a businessman with making money as his motto, Uncle Bolly decided to build a holiday resort there. But the forest stood in the way and Uncle Bolly decided to clear it to make way for his plan.
Upon discovering Uncle Bolly's plan, Amrita tried to persuade him to change his mind. The forest had been a home for the animals and most important of all, it protected her village form the regular sandstorm. She knew that if the forest were to be cleared, all living creatures would be destroyed. Just when Uncle Bolly was about to brush Amrita aside, the sand storm came.
If not for the presence of the forest, Uncle Bolly would have been blown away easily by the strong wind. He finally realized the importance of the trees and decided to consider building his holiday resort with the minimum harm done to the forest ~ that was to build among the trees.
Using a combination of hand and rod puppets, the story is told with informative facts of our ecology and the stress on protecting the source of life, which are the plants and trees.
